Heavy volcanic emissions are beginning to worry Hawai'i's residents. Normal April wind patterns have shifted causing toxic sulfur dioxide to remain stagnant in the archipelago's atmosphere.

According to the Honolulu Advertiser, "Federal officials closed Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park twice this month because of concern that sulfur dioxide levels there were unsafe, evacuating about 2,000 people from research facilities, campgrounds and the Volcano House hotel along with popular tourist spots."

The emissions have residents concerned over coffee production as volcano has left a gray film over leaves. The devastating results of the volcanoes' emissions have already affected local flower industries. When oxidized with the common pollutant nitrogen dioxide, SO2 forms acid rain.

The Hawai'i island volcanoes are responsible for 2,700 to 3,700 sulfur-dioxide emissions daily, and scientists are unsure as to how long the conditions will continue.
