Chelsea Clinton on Women's Rights and Hillary Clinton's Contributions

Chelsea Clinton answers a question about her mom's commitment to women's issues. Her articulate answer about Hillary Clinton's concrete contributions to fight for Equal Pay, Reproductive Choice and Reduction of Teen Pregnancy by 1/2, and worldwide to work against school fees that prevent girls from equal access to education to empower women, promote democracy and enhance the good will of the United States is testimony to the many reasons why Hillary Clinton would be a great president for America and the world.

Hillary Clinton has long championed the rights of women and families.

for Hillary Clinton's "Women's Rights are Human Rights" Speech to the UN Gathering on Women's Rights in Beijing on September 5, 1995.

"By gathering in Beijing, we are focusing world attention on issues that matter most in the lives of women and their families: access to education, health care, jobs and credit, the chance to enjoy basic legal and human rights and participate fully in the political life of their countries."

What we are learning around the world is that if women are healthy and educated, their families will flourish. If women are free from violence, their families will flourish. If women have a chance to work and earn as full and equal partners in society, their families will flourish.

And when families flourish, communities and nations will flourish.

That is why every woman, every man, every child, every family, and every nation on our planet has a stake in the discussion that takes place here.

Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children and families. Over the past two-and-a-half years, I have had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my own country and around the world.

Women comprise more than half the world's population. Women are 70% percent of the world's poor, and two-thirds of those who are not taught to read and write.

Women are the primary caretakers for most of the world's children and elderly. Yet much of the work we do is not valued - not by economists, not by historians, not by popular culture, not by government leaders.

Those of us who have the opportunity to be here have the responsibility to speak for those who could not.

As an American, I want to speak up for women in my own country - women who are raising children on the minimum wage, women who can't afford health care or child care, women whose lives are threatened by violence, including violence in their own homes.

We also must recognize that women will never gain full dignity until their human rights are respected and protected.

Our goals for this Conference, to strengthen families and societies by empowering women to take greater control over their own destinies, cannot be fully achieved unless all governments - here and around the world - accept their responsibility to protect and promote internationally recognized human rights.

No one should be forced to remain silent for fear of religious or political persecution, arrest, abuse or torture.

Tragically, women are most often the ones whose human rights are violated.

and,

Now it is time to act on behalf of women everywhere. If we take bold steps to better the lives of women, we will be taking bold steps to better the lives of children and families too.

Let this Conference be our - and the world's - call to action.

And let us heed the call so that we can create a world in which every woman is treated with respect and dignity, every boy and girl is loved and cared for equally, and every family has the hope of a strong and stable future."

    • While I respect the rights of women and believe that we should advocate for thier equal treatment, I have to say that we must think about the equality of all of our citizens. The fact that women only make 70 cents on the dollar to the average male's salary is absurd.

However, I would not be moved to vote for Hillary based on just this platform. The same end result could arguably be achieved without her entering into office through protesting and legislation. I would like to hear more on her views on social issues involving more than just women's rights.

I'm just unsure about her commitment to us all. I have a feeling that she is going to follow the same road as her husband in making a great deal of promises she does not intend on keeping. How much of what she says is the real deal and how much of it is pandering to women? 13 years inside politics and 100 million dollars can change a person's outlook on society as a whole...

Chelsea is a poised, compassionate, intelligent woman who is a credit to her parents and our country is fortunate that she is an articulate spokesperson for her generation.

    • Chelsea is simply amazing! It looks like Bill & Hill did something right! She has Hill's smarts and Bill's calmness. I can see her becoming president in a decade or two.

    • I say everything is fair game for any presidential candidate. SInce he has the power to send me and my brothers to die. So, since I serve my country and protect our constitution in the United States Military I want to know everything there is to know about the person, whomever that may be, that will have the power to determine when and where me and my troop could die. So, for the person running for office I want to know everything there is to know.

Again in this free country, if you dont want to know something about your possible future president, that is your decision and I respect and protect your right. But in my case I do, I hope you respect my decision.

    • Age is a fact. It's personal, but a matter of record, so we get to know it.
But to prejudge candidates based on age is ageist, and not helpful in making a wise choice.
For example, choosing a younger person assuming they will live a long life, is not always a sure bet. Behavior, judgment and lifestyle as well as genetics determine longevity. An older person with a family tree full of nonagenarians may turn out to outlive a younger one who has a different genetic family history.

    • Personal is personal.
Religious beliefs expressed personally are personal.

Religious beliefs expressed in community are by definition communal, therefore not personal.

    • Hhhhmm Ok, so is there any other topic that is out of discussion about the people running for the highest office in the country? What about personal religious believes? Age?

    • Again, it is none of our business what their private relationship is.
Jesus, and many spiritual leaders admonish us not to judge. How does anyone give themselves the authority to judge another couple's love?
These people are politicians and public servants. We can expect them to do their job, but we do not have the right to their personal private life. How can anyone else can know if one person truly loves another? No one can. Nor should we.
That said, the obvious respect and positive attitude that Chelsea Clinton radiates has for both her parents shows there is lots of love in their family.
She is living proof. Another thing is what my colleagues and I saw when Bill Clinton came to Santa Fe in 2000. The sweetness the entire staff of the IAIA Museum saw with which Bill Clinton carefully chose gifts for both Hillary and Chelsea that day was an act of real love. You can't fake that. Anyone who calls Bill Clinton a fake, just doesn't know. They are just blowing smoke. Ask why. As far as America regaining its place as a beacon of freedom and liberty. That all depends on your perspective whether it ever was. From the Indians point of view, not so much.
But from abroad, yes, and from what we heard from cab drivers in D.C. last fall, most who were from Pakistan or Ethiopia, America still is a beacon of freedom to much of the world, despite the serious ground we've lost under Bush/Cheney.

America had relatively good standing in the world during the Clinton years. If given the chance, Hillary Clinton will regain that respect again, and win over the world like she did with her "Women's Rights are Human Rights" speech that moved the world.

    • Hillary did not truly stand by her man. She does not know how to take care of her man. Moreover she knew what was going on and turned her head.

I have a strong feeling that she stayed with him for political reasons. If my "better half" cheats on me multiple times. . . She would be out after the first, if love is present in the relationship it is a violation of trust. You can tell there is no LOVE in their relationship. . . it is all a fake, all for show all for her to take the credits of her husband presidency and use it to run for office.

All I want is for America to stand up again and be the bright beacon of freedom and liberty it use to be to the world. I don't think Hillary has the honesty and integrity to take us there.

      just a thought. . .

    • Word, JanforGore.

Again, we get what we'd expect from the Obama high roaders.

Actually what was said about "Chelsea being an embarrassment to my generation" is much more accurately descriptive of the behavior of this poster and too many like him.

Pretty much expect that kind of low blow at this point. But it is disturbing to hear young women spouting sexist venom as well towards the first American woman leader who said "Women's Rights are Human Rights" and works to make it happen.

Chelsea's dad devotes his time to the Clinton Global Initiative. Check out the link to see the good work they do.

Why does the Obama Camp follow the neo-con Karl Rove Republicans in obssessing about other people's marriages and what kind of sex they have or don't have? Bill and Hillary Clinton's marriage just like every American's should be nobody else's business.

Hillary Clinton did not embarrass women or feminists by "standing by her man", she showed she was courageous, compassionate, and forgiving, all good qualities in a leader. She also showed she wasn't going to give up a love affair since college days for a mistake, nor be bullied by the Republic attack machine to leave a man who has been her partner and counsel for decades.
Loyalty and the ability to withstand disapproval to honor your vows is also a good quality for a leader.

    • I don't think anyone's forcing Chelsea to do this. She has a very good head on her shoulders. If she didn't want to do this, or didn't believe in her mom, she could easily have chosen to be busy with a college course or new job, and have sat out of this whole process. To say they're "flogging and whoring the kid" is seriously underestimating who Chelsea is.
