In a formal letter to the Energy Department, religious organizations from across the country called instead for the United States to end new nuclear weapons production and commit to multilateral disarmament.
"We call on our political leaders to show the moral and political courage necessary to bring about a shift in our nations nuclear weapons posture. Today we have a historic opportunity to begin the journey out from under the shadow of nuclear weapons," stressed the religious groups.
The letter was submitted to the Energy Department as part of a public comment period required to assess the environmental impact of Complex Transformation, the proposed plan to rebuild the U.S. nuclear weapons complex. The centerpiece of this proposal is a new nuclear weapons facility at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, located 25 miles northwest of Santa Fe, NM.
The new bomb plant facility would enable the mass production of plutonium pits, the primary detonators in modern nuclear weapons.
The statements signers expressed concern that the new and upgraded facilities would be used in the development of a new generation of nuclear warheads, despite the moral and legal obligations of the United States to reduce its weapons arsenal.

Nuclear power is the most advanced, triumphant achievement in physics, the crown jewel in scientific achievement of the 20th century. You people want to go back to the stone age.

More about 'Complex Transformation,' which assures that the United States will be on a war and a nuclear footing for years to come. So would Obama stand up to this? If he couldn't even stand up to EXELON in Illinois regarding toxic leaks, how is he going to stand up to end this? This is what it means to LEAD, not just give pretty speeches in the hope you will get the big house and the perks just to say you beat the Clintons. This is serious business and a lot of lives are at stake. I hope to God we will not make another mistake.

But will the next "president" show the moral courage needed to say NO MORE NUKES? I doubt it. Not when these candidates actually want to INCREASE the military in this country. How can we say we are a nation that seeks peace when we have programs like this along with an ever increasing and obscene defense budget?
We should be working to decrease our arsenal and calling on all countries in this world to do the same. Nuclear power in any form is nothing but another way for us to cause our own extinction and it should be fought tooth and nail.
I am so sick of the war is peace mindset of the leaders of this country, and I don't see any candidate stepping forward to say no nukes. So what does that then tell us about the real intentions of anyone who attains the presidency in this country? To really make a change? Or to simply say they will while carrying on the status quo? - 3 years ago

JanforGore:
You people are fools.
Your reasoning is flawed, your thinking is impressionistic and driven by ignorance and fear. The "bomb" facility is being converted for nuclear ENERGY... that means ELECTRICITY... and that means reducing dependence on fossil fuels, reducing CO2, you know, that plant food we humans breathe out that you psychos are so terrified about.
