A Car-Free May

On May 1, the day Beth Potier and her husband, Brent Bell, began a pledge to go the entire month without using their car, Brent had a doctor's appointment in Somersworth. Normally, he would drive their silver Saab station wagon for the roughly 20-mile roundtrip, but in keeping with their commitment, he strapped on his helmet and hopped on his fixed-gear Redline bike.
"I showed up drenched in sweat," Bell said.
Showing up at engagements beet-red and panting for air is one of the sacrifices Bell and Potier are willing to make to reduce their carbon emissions, stay in shape and encourage community members to take up biking as a primary mode of transportation. May is National Bike Month, which partly inspired Potier's car-free idea.
So last Thursday, she parked the station wagon in the garage, and barring a health-related emergency, it's not coming out until June 1.
