Cannabis hemp: a viable option to oil dependency

Chancellor Alistair Darling has once again assured voters he will "take another look" at a proposed 2p fuel price rise which is set to come into being from October 2008, but seriously is 2p enough? Is NOT increasing the price of fuel the bait needed to win back a million (or two) voters? Hardly.
Only a couple of days ago, members of the UK road haulage industry threatened to blockade oil refineries and ports unless the government managed to find a 20p-25p essential user rebate for the transport sector in seven days. An industry which has borne the brunt of the last decade and of Labour rule has decided clearly enough is enough.
Isn't it about time we as a nation looked to break our dependency on the petroleum industry, by investigating the other alternatives? There are a few.

Folks, you're using reason and logic, when the other side is using physical violence. I suggest either figuring out that it's time to vote Libertarian (and yes, I know that they ran a reformed drug warrior this year, but it's not that simple, and their VP is running for pres again in 4 years, on a platform that includes abolishing the DEA), and inform your friends and families that you will no longer tolerate their bigotry, as well as helping to educate them about their rights and responsibilities as jurors http://www.fija.org
The alternative is to live as slaves, or violent rebellion. Neither of those is very attractive, even/especially to people who have proven themselves to be cowards.
http://www.rootforamerica.com -It's time to start planning, and working for the America we want in 2012, 2016, and 2020.
Let's not fail any more. Freedom is too important!

I think the point of the article, whether you agree with the subject matter or not, is the fact the petroleum industry has a stranglehold; a monopoly, over the entire planet.
They have complete control over how much they sell crude oil for, and I thought it a damning indictment of the entire situation when the two highest serving UK government ministers, (Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling), traveled to Scotland to meet the oil industry executives.
In no other industry would a government travel.
Ordinarily industry travels to meet the government, which tells me this industry has too much power.
If we are to change the trend in the environment. If we are to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, there is no other plant which sequesters as much CO2 from the environment as hemp. What the hemp is used for there-after, is the deciding factor in how much carbon is actually removed from the global carbon cycle.
The fact is hemp works as an oil alternative, and there's no longer anywhere to hide the fact.

The times they are a changin'
The DEA's administrative judge, Francis J. Young, after hearing two weeks of testimony, wrote: "nearly all medicines have toxins, potentially lethal affects, but marijuana is not such a substance...Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man. By any measure of rational analysis marijuana can be safely used within a supervised routine of medical care" (DEA Docket No. 86-22, 57)
This nation was founded on and started by hemp farmers ...

There is an inherent problem with using hemp in the U.S., and that is you have to go against decades of drug-warrior cultism by the federal and state governments that have declared war on ANYTHING associated with hemp's cousin. And they don't care if they are going against public opinion or public desire or even "the greater good". Sustaining and preserving their cultish mindset is all that matters to them.

Almost anything can be made into fuel...and yes, hemp would actually cause just as much of a problem as corn because it takes up space that could be used to grow food. Plus hemp can be used for food too.
As for corn, I don't see why we can't grow it, use the kernels or whatever as food, and then use the stalks to make biofuel--I've heard that the stalks and other waste material left over actually produce more/better fuel.I'm not saying I'm against using hemp for fuel, I'm just saying it doesn't really sound too much different than our other biofuel options. It's only a story because it's hemp, which I suppose is supposed to be somewhat controversial.

argyle_kitten:
argyle_kitten, It’s only controversial because facts about hemp/cannabis have been erased from our history books. Think about it, a plant removed from our history books? Why? A plant that can be used to make almost everything oil can make. A plant that can be used for many medical purposes. A plant that could stop, or at least slow down deforestation, because it can be used to make many of the things wood is now used for. A plant that can grow in almost any climate. A plant that needs little water to grow. A plant that removes many toxins from our air. The list goes on…
It doesn’t make sense to deny discussion. Really! The government and corporate America are so determined to eliminate the discussion, they have included it in their hiring process. They make people urinate in a cup to be able to work. When your job is at risk because you talk about hemp, something is wrong. All they need to do is say ‘marijuana’ and hemp/cannabis facts go out the window.

I'm not saying I'm against it, I'm just saying the government will look at this as a joke and continue to think of "green" and "alternate fuels" as a far left liberal idea, not worth tackling.

75thDeadMan, Your response about how this article will lead this government to look at alternative fuels even less serious, makes no sense. Are you just spouting rhetoric? Hemp is a viable alternative that has been used for various purposes throughout history! That’s a FACT! FACTS HAVE BEEN HIDDEN FROM AMERICANS! FACT! Studies have been performed via our tax dollars and when the facts did not go the way of the ‘Drug War’ they were never released! They pick and choose which facts, or distorted facts they want released.
Anything can be spun in any directions. Some use ‘few facts’ to discredit the ‘MANY FACTS’!
Have you learnt nothing from watching government in action? They lie and distort facts in plain sight, with no accountability. The majority of decisions have not been made for the benefit of ordinary Americans. The decisions and facts have been shaped around Corporate America! Money talks, facts walk! It’s an ‘Assault on Reason’!

Challenge included in the book, 'The Emperor Wears No Clothes' by Jack Herer.
$100,000 Challenge to Prove Us Wrong!
If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction, were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the Greenhouse Effect and stop deforestation;
then there is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meet all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time...
and that substance is the same one that has done it before . . .

I would like to hear an educated discussion about Industrial hemp. It's never too late to change course.Let's talk about it!

Henry Ford was way ahead of you guys. He was doing this in 1925 until congress and big oil taxed hemp out of his reach. The reason Henry Ford hated Politicians and Jews. Read history. This man found more uses for Hemp than anyone would ever imagine, he had vision and insight. He was light years ahead of his time.

Hemp isn't a food product and therefore wouldn't cause a problem with food around the world. It does sound reasonable to use it since it does better than sugar and that's what Brazil is doing.
This will also, maybe, create new jobs and people who will benefit greatly from this. This could end this retarded drug ban.
