Nuclear plant incident in Slovenia: alert issued

A leak of coolant has prompted Slovenia to shut down the reactor at its only nuclear power plant, BBC News reports.

Authorities say that no nuclear material has been discharged into the environment. However, all 27 EU member states have been alerted following the Ecurie early warning system for nuclear emergencies.

    • This got in the news because the Slovenes accidentally triggered the Europe-wide alert system put in place after Chernobyl!

      Talk about "D'oh!"

The original leak of water coolant was really quite insignificant. These things are cooled by hundreds of tonnes of the stuff going through thousands of miles of pipe. When you hear about a 'leak' at a nuclear power plant, virtually every time it concerns completely pure and clean water.

    • Slovenia's nuclear safety chief Andrej Stritar said there was a water leak from the primary circuit inside the containment area.

He said operators had shut down the plant safely.

"Situation is under control," he said in a statement. "The plant is in stable condition. There is no off-site impact and there is no need for off-site protective measures. "

The Krsko plant has a US-made pressurised water reactor.

      I wonder what failed?

    • NIRS says Global 2000 from Vienna, Austria are on their way to take their own readings of the site. Green peace International of Amsterdam is asking for independent analysis of radiation readings. The alert was today. One assumes the leak was today... Better then finding out three days to a week later...
