PVC shower curtains release harmful chemicals

Using polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-based shower curtains in the household may pose a health risk because the curtains of this type release a number of toxic chemicals such as toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and others at the point of purchasing and during at least the first month of use, according to a study released by an environmental group.

How could 66% of the voters think this is not newsworthy? Do you not shower? Do you use an organic hemp canvas shower curtain? Do you know where I can get one?

I guess those glass sliding shower doors have the last laugh, huh?

    • According to this article, "The restrictions take effect on Jan. 1, 2009."

Until then, I'm assuming that products have phthalates, unless they state otherwise.

The law also seems to focus on products for children under three years of age, important of course, because....."Phthalates are used in many products for young children, including teething rings, toys, and soft plastic books. They are added to improve the flexibility of polyvinyl chloride and to bind fragrances in baby lotions, soaps, and shampoos."

A shower curtain might not fall under this law, but even if the child doesn't shower, the air will be toxic as this off gases, and the law should apply.

      ...Meanwhile, at
      PHTHALATES-R-US PLASTICS INC:

"Hmm, what are we going to do with all this extra phthalate in 2009?"

"Well, we could add extra to our line of shower curtains!?"
