CURRENT MEETUP?

I have been very inspired by comments, posts, replies and messages from members of Current.com.

So, I got to thinking, what if we all met up and started, as a team, implementing some of these ideas we bang aound on the site and channel?

What about finding (possibly by zipcode) where we all are, and whereever possible, establishing meetups?

Maybe monthly, where we can discuss an agenda to actually brainstrom and IMPLEMENT real change.

We could pool all our resources and who knows what we could accomplish??

    • Hey everyone,

We have an update! We want to get these meetups in full swing, so if you know of a place in your area that is having an event, clip a link to the event to Current.com and add it to the Current Meet-Up topic thread.

We'll post events that we're planning to hit up as well, so check back their often. Think of it as our community hub for meetups.

    • good morning all!

Carluccio your points are totally well taken!

We've actually been looking into meetup.com, but it seems like we can easily do this through Current.com.
We're setting up a topic page on current.com/meetup (coming soon!) to address this very need... Keep checking in.

      Best,
      Saskia

    • I think the meetups are a great idea and long over due. From the small screening/meet-up I hosted last summer, I found it liberating to spend quality face time with like minded artists. Whether it is via Current or an another entity, it is import to have a family of folks that you can share, learn from and grow with.

      What I recommend is:
      1) Current set up something on Meetup.com

      and/or

      2) Set-up the profile to add zipcode(s)
[some people may need a few -- school, nomadic, bi-coastal, rep your hometown, etc.]

      3) Allow folks to send an announcement to others in your local zip code.

      4) optional: Current reps should maybe get out to these when possible.

      5) If Current has sponsors interested in being involved, have them reach out to the meetups leader, or have a sponsors list or advertisement posted to be reachable.

      6) Possibly get Shooting people, DCTV, etc. involved too.

Hey! We just were in NYC- we'll try to be there again soon. As far as LA goes, we'll be in LA at the end of July for DIY Day (an event we are doing with From Here to Awesome Film Festival)-- we'll post info at current.com/outreach as it develops, but the date we have going right now is July 26th!

    • Hey guys -- just wanted to give you all a heads up, a whole bunch of new and fresh stories are flooding into Current, which will result in this item sliding further down the home page.

It's popular, and we definitely want this conversation to continue, but we can't report it in Current:News so it's likely to move down to the second page of the popular feed.

We will be announcing some plans for a Current Meetup soon, so keep an eye on this thread, or check our blog regularly for updates: http://current.com/blog

      Thanks!

    • I fully agree... Short of signing online petitions, and (HOPEFULLY) calling into congress/reps, it's not too effective.

I'd LOVE to have a meetup with people from Current. I host documentary screenings at my house every month or so, and I'm going to be showing the new Greenwald/Nation film July 5th. It's called BraveNation.

If anyone's into that, I already have 27RSVP'd but I could squeeze a few more in.

Until then, THANKS FOR ALL YOUR RESPONSES! Makes me happy to see people jumping in to hang with each other.

Big "media"/corporations/various other distractions are trying to keep us afraid of each other and SEPERATE...

Lets UNITE and shut this corruption down!

      PEACE

    • There is this really cool software for setting up WebCam Servers. Meeting in person of course though is a great experience. If someone wants, I can put up a WebCam Server that streams the meetings minutes, and festivities. This way users all over the country would just need an IIP to connect to my Laptop WebCamServer I am working on recently. With decent bandwidth it could fly.

There is also Yahoo messenger, which allows for meetings in one room, and of course, webcam's could be used to add that personal touch, along with voice.
This would also work since the servers are at Yahoo, and accessible from anywhere.

Meetup.com is a great place to organize meets, but so is email.

      Pretty cool eh?

Enjoy, Oly Ander, Long Beach, Ca.

    • I can see the headline now for the 1st meeting:

"Good idea turns into drum circle pot smoke out capped off with I hate George Bush cry-in."

Sorry but you people are too hate filled to collectively come up with any effective ideas to handle anything. Maybe you could all meet up and exchange conspiracy theories and share ideas on how to make an ultra protective tin foil hat that doubles as a bong in the safety of your parents basement.

Maybe you'd have better success with goth music festival emo cut-in, I think you liberals might be onto something but it's definitely not anything outside of a social waste of time.

      That's great!!!

Ignore it and it might go away. If you engage it, it will attempt to bore you to death with the same thing over and over again.

Being void of creative thought, the troll uses similar tactics seen in elementary schools. Name calling and spreading of rumors are commonly viewed as brilliant "strategery".

If you encounter the troll, do not engage directly, they love to argue rather than debate, and will attempt to discredit you without facts. This tactic is also part of their strategery. They seem themselves as the decider and they decide what's best.

Occasionally, repeated use of the "I know you are but what I am I" method of treatment, but only for very low level trolls. Also, "I'm rubber and you're glue" can bring the troll to considerable rage, this however is a dangerous path to follow.

Many trolls, when they realize they are being laughed at, do rage, which when treated with more laughter, results in hilarity as they stamp their feet and yell.

    • I can travel to Portland, Oregon. I would also be willing to travel to San Francisco to collaborate, with plenty of notice.

Next week I am shooting Olympic athletes here in Eugene for the Olympic track and field trials. I am meeting with Bob Schul who is very active with former medal winners to reach out to kids about the dangers of drugs and creating enthusiasm with them to go after sports.

We made a deal that I get to use the footage he hired me to shoot for him to create a pod for Current. I am very excited to get to have this opportunity. If anyone wants to come to Eugene, i can host you at my house, if you want to work with me on this pod project.

    • This is a brilliant idea! We could organize in groups of 5 to 15 and document or film any number of topics. I would suggest filming interviews with lawyers or other people who may be interested in prosecuting George W. Bush for Murder. Iraq is the Number One Issue in the world, what to speak of the U.S. What is more relevant or disgusting than the myriad of crimes committed by the Bush regime over the last 7 years. 10 Trillion $'s squandered on an illegal and immoral war because a handful of wealthy chicken-hawks just "decided to go for it". What to speak of the loss of human life on both sides. Especially those poor Iraqi women and children. 100's of 1000's of them. All of this against the back-drop of the OBVIOUSLY IMPLODED WTC BUILDINGS. That looks bad. Just go ask the great NYC firemen, they know what really happened on that fateful day. This country is being totally "F'd-over" by Bush and the neo-con agenda. Everyone with a human heart and half a brain knows this sorry state of affairs. Don't get me started. The power and influence of the multi-national corp. in the US is criminal, to put it lightly. Let's see some video on the lives of the unseen powerful contrasted by video of real people who are literally being raped and killed for the benefit of the unseen powerful. That would be some compelling video!

Would anyone be interested in a weekly meetup @ current.com? Open discussion, talking about various topics with others who want to talk. The new ‘reply’ feature would enable us to participate in various conversations at the same time. I could participate online, pick a date and time.
