Deadly Club Drug

edsonuk
GHB is fast becoming the replacement for ecstasy on the gay clubbing scene - but as its use grows so does the number of fatalities; five men died in one year in one London club alone. In this pod we meet a range of people who's lives have been affected by this increasingly popular drug.

    • There are many inaccuracies in this report. There are also unsubstantiated statements declared as fact. There are no recorded incidences of people dying as a direct result of GHB ingestion. Death usually occurs because the user has taken other drugs as a cocktail and dies as a result of vomiting and choking on their vomit. This also happens to people who “overdose” on alcohol.

In certain countries in Eastern Europe, GHB is used as an anaesthetic where unconsciousness is induced by huge doses of GHB. The size of these doses far surpasses doses taken by clubbers, with no deaths reported from poisoning or overdose. GHB is being used less as an anaesthetic now because patients have been known to sit bolt upright during operations as the GHB induced coma wears off. GHB is also used to treat addiction to cocaine, heroin and alcohol because of its ability to switch off the withdrawal symptoms of these drugs and also to induce the sleep that evades many of those addicts.

The report talks about GBL being a form of GHB. This is far from the truth; GHB is made of two ingredients, both toxic to the body. GBL is one ingredient and Sodium Hydroxide (NAOH) is the other. These two ingredients are an alkaline and an acid and on their own are dangerous. Once mixed using heat a chemical reaction occurs and they become GHB which is PH neutral and no longer an irritant to the body.

All these facts are verifiable and readily available on line. I am not condoning drug taking but GHB is surrounded by myth and hearsay. I am acquainted with a group of GHB takers who number around twenty people and they have been taking GHB every weekend for nearly 10 years and the worst problem they have encountered is falling into a GHB coma for three hours and missing all the fun.

    • Good to know that some people use GHB as proper medicine. Not only you but also other people like bodybuilders use GHB within a controled enviroment and make good use of it. As you mention, you take GHB within a medicine called Xyrem. Im sure somehow that variation of GHB comes in a way that causes good to your health. The people I refer to in my documentary, they buy "pure" GHB on line and take it on constant bases while clubbing. Every now and then we hear a history of someone that has died because of a GHB overdose. Last month, a 23 yo sounth african guy commited suicide by taking an overdose of GHB, a 19 year old english boy accidently took an overdose of GHB and died as well while i was shooting the documentary. It somehow became a sort of weapon. What we want to discuss with the documentary is not to take the drug out of the market but to make it so that it isnt so easy to purchase. Like that we can avoid its misuse for clubbing saving it for proper needs like to cure people. Thankx for your comment.

    • I don't understand? I am prescrided phramy grade GHB in a drug called Xyrem. I am prescibed two 4.5 liquid gram doses a night. How are these kids over doseing on 1.8-2.5 ML? This drug is miracle when used the right way by the people who need it. To bad this drug will only get bad press do to one sided bias coverage. Truth be told this drug has saved my life and I thank god every day for it to be availible in a medication form.I only hope that this fad dies before these idiots have my Rx taken from me due to pubic outrage.

    • the stories told here really struck a chord with me, i had my trip to hospital for picking up the wrong drink in a house party, and lost 5 hours to the drug, surrealist experience of my life, beyond the guilt and the fear that i have done alot of damage to myself, more so was the fact that no-one in the party knew whom brought it and whom was using it.

    • FIRE was the only venue that would allow access to highlight the problems the clubbing scene faces by helping me make this documentary. Edson costa

    • I couldnt cover the whole use of GHB in the country so i decided to concentrate in one only aspect to make the movie. Club Fire was my best option as i have good access to the venue and they always help me to produce videos to create awarness. GHB is widely used in the whole gay scene in London and other cities in europe but is also used among straight people. In Brazil for example, aka "Boa Noite Cinderella - Good Night Cinderella" is known as a rape drug and it is used to target tourists.
