Stop the noise!

When noise pollution is not making us sick and anxious, it is literally killing us. How do we turn it off?

June 25, 2008 | Henry Bean can't stand the sound of burglar alarms. He hates back-up beepers on trucks and bristles when garbage rigs grind up their fetid loads in the middle of the night, the noise reverberating off Manhattan's buildings. But Bean harbors special resentment for the oblivious car owners whose vehicles blare false alarms. "It bothers me that their cars can shout in my ear, not stop shouting, and I can't do anything about it," he says. "My pride can't handle it. I can't exist if I don't fight back in some way, however pathetically or ineffectually."

You have changed the main issue we were debating to a totally different subject. You sure can hear your music as long as you are not inflicting in the acoustic rights of others. I hope all your neighbors are ok with you!

But at the end this girl wins the battle and now protects those innocents.

Your opinion is full of stereotypes and false entitlements. I am just happy I can be the vehicle to expose some people's personal behavior here.
Just think about Fascism and Totalitarianism. That is what your are representing right now! You are part of the task force for Fascism! However, You are Not a good one! Try to build some veridical statement as by stereotyping you are actually losing the entire argument!

    • I am the one considering your side!
You are the one NOT considering my side of the story!

Your sense of entitlement comes from a part of society that has been corrupted mentally and psychologically and thus have taken over because you are the big "gorilla" in the room.

Somehow our acoustic laws that protects all citizens in the confinements of their houses have been corrupted, denied by a psychopath society that took over power in our United States Government, at the transportation level.
So now instead developing green, quiet, smart technologies people decided to transform themselves in a mechanical acoustic dinosaur.

You guys have not even considerating the other non- invasive options for safety. You see, I am remembering giving you the solution and you ignored or fail to understand it. Sensors, remember? They have been around for decades! There are also other options!

Who is the real psycho here? I, the one that is not invading anyone and thus not contributing to acoustic chaos and confusion in society. Or you? The one that is doing it and thinks it is ok to do it because you do not have the necessary skills to drive! Maybe you shouldn't be driving!

You can use all the excuses in the world to justify your lack of driving skills and blame others for it.
If you are irresponsible enough to let children run behind trucks in movement on the street, then you should assume your faulty behavior instead of passing the buck into others.

I can say that new born are also suffering death crib syndrome because of your noise that induce unnecessary stress to their lives. What about the sick in which you are disturbing? What about the pregnant moms that you are disturbing with your noise? What about the one that are working? Reading? or living in their homes? Why is that they have to be disturbed and stop their work for you so you can do a backup or maneuver a machine on the streets?
What you are really doing is to induce stress and steal health and time from other people lives.

I did consider your side and your views. It is the fact that what is written was looking into the negative sides but not the the safety sides of noise pollution. For instance, I wake up pretty early everyday like today is another gifted day like any other day. I get up and get my young children ready for school, as soon as they're gone to school I head back to back for a little nap, then I heard this loud noise of blower and lawn mower across the street of my house, but this only happens once a week. It does annoy me so much, but I have learned how to be patient and so does my family. I have learned to adapt to this type of situation.
Being just one of the minority living in a nice all American Caucasian neighborhood that has big giant USA flags hanging in their front yards that signifies control and warning signs for us minorities., and
you are right that it's been part of our society for a very long time and we have learned to adjust to it patiently. It does not mean we don't care. We have no choice but to be content with what we have. I wish I can go back living in my grandparents farm in the Island of the Phillipines where life is also not so perfect. A place where there's no water, no electricity but all I can hear are people's laughter. And I wake up to the beauty of smoking volcano without any judgement or criticism. It is not that we don't care, every human do care, we wish we can all have it all on our hands and make a better change for our children, but we can't. All we can do for now is work on sustaining our environment for the future of our children and love and respect one another. We can agree or dis agree with certain subject, but it is not human to judge other.

I am aware of how I drive, but the same time it is awareness that we need to bring to those who does not practice safety. Just like I said we were all born not to be perfect.

Who is the real psycho here? a person who has the trend a habit to use such word to offend someone's emotion for their satisfaction. It is provoking to human nature. It is not healthy. Not unless it is your style and who you are or who taught you.

Take me to your leader, lol :),

suggestion for you. This is how I fight all these noise and disturbance around us,The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, by Deepak Chopra says practicing silence periodically as it convenient to you is own way to experience the law of pure potentiality. The gap is your connection to the field of pure potentiality. It is the state of pure awareness, that silent space between thoughts, that inner stillness that connects you to true power.

      take some yoga class.

      Namaste.

Every spiritual matter ends against an intrusive energy as noise! We are no longer dealing with spiritual matters but with an energy and a physical mechanical matter.

You are welcome to continue with your spiritual approach but just remember that you are in actuality using a form of meditation to feed an apathetic behavior. That is not healthy!

If you have been attacked or someone is attacking you and possessing your house environment, you must defend yourself! Not Accepting a condition of passive victim, in other words accepting being captive of a sadist society.

Is true, there are many types of personalities! Some are passive masochists some are aggressive passive sadists and some are neither and do not accept the incursions of neither one. That's me! Every sadist is also a Fascist! One goes very much with the other.

Maybe you should read some books of the Second World War and How Hitler started it by invading Poland and all the other Countries in Europe. It will help you!
There are many questions about this war! But one of the questions point to the fact that we have in one side an invader, Hitler! And we have on the other side one that got invaded, Poland. I am Poland! Who you think you are?

    • You are not considering all sides of this issue of "alleged safety" for sure. One of the trades of a psychopath personality is never do really care to see an issue from all sides.

It is always that narrow vision obstructing their thoughts somehow. So, what about the people that are in their homes? Have you ever thought that they do not want to hear that noise signal energy coming from the streets and trespassing their habitats?

Out of The EMS, Police and Fire Emergencies, if you think it is ok to trespass and violate the acoustic rights of others in the privacy of their homes, at your command, just because you are walking, riding or driving on the streets; you are wrong! That is exactly the delusion of those that want to justify safety by shooting noise at others and that for sure is what makes You a part of the problem and not the solution.

Believe me, there are technological solutions for your lack of respect for others. Why our government and public are not adopting? That is the question about lack of technological education, fault behavior, corruption and or aggressive passive behavior by some parts of the America Population.

Just think about for a moment! Sensors have been around for decades now.
You go to the Super Market and voila! The doors opens and closes for you and you did not have ever to touch the door.

      What is that?

that is not the point, I think you're just over judgemental yourself and pretty much don't see the safety side and not contributing to any solution to this problem. Just like what you wrote " One of the trades of a psychopath personality is never do really care to see an issue from all sides", of some the point is safety first and saving peoples lives in every aspect. The law does regulate the amount of noise that is being distributed in public. I am not talking about those people who upgrades their cars with some type of exhaust that contributes to bad environment and driving around the city setting off car alarms is one I will not argue. But if there's a purpose to deliver human safety why not. We're human and born not to be perfect. There are children that are victim of many incidents. You should look it up. You sound like a very educated person. But I am humble in life and I believe in preserving the future of our children. Removing warning noise will not help, unless we all have to keep watching out back for such incidents from happening and start using our human instinct. Too bad it's out there and I have one on my truck so I can save lives. If you're one of my neighbor who like to complaint about little noise, you need to move away from the city life. We are all human and deserves to live life accordingly with no judgement or harm to others. SAFETY FIRST.
      and welcome to planet earth.

I do aggree on these issues tho. They should ban

.1) Loud noises that are being illegally modify on any type of vehicles, they're useless for our environment and society.

2.) I do not like waste management trucks, but they do pick up your mess.

    • If people would only realize how peaceful life can be without unnecessary noise. My big gripe is all the wannabe tough guys riding around on motorcycles with loud pipes. LOUD PIPES DO NOT SAVE LIVES!
The sound is behind the motorcycle it doesn't warn motorists ahead of them.
Why aren't the police enforcing the legal exhaust laws?
Are they afraid to pull these big bad ....cough....bikers over?

    • I totally sympathise with you and also feel for you! Our Society has become a living corruption and people in the News TV still juggling like clowns going sleep with half of their heads empty and without accomplishing much. The Government became an acoustic violator itself with a part of the public feeding into their corruption by adding some of their own. We are near to a turning point. They cannot complain that they have not been warned about it!

    • As one prepares to take the exit into the small town in which I reside, there's a sign that reads "Noise laws strictly enforced." Or something similar ... sheesh, I just drove by it on my way home. I guess I've grown to ignore it, as I live on one of the busiest streets in town, and the 'jake brake' polution during the day literally rocks the foundation of my large, built-like-a-brick-shithouse-circa-1925, house similar to one of the small earthquakes I remember enduring while living in San Francisco (nevermind the 'big one').

Those alleged 'noise laws' must be pretty damned lax. That, or maybe the sign means: "Be as loud as humanly possible or face being ticketed."

Oh, and my neighbor (or as I refer to him: "crazy gun-toting snowbilly") shooting off his shotgun at 7am ... yeah, that's always a nice jolt outta sleep. Did I mention I work nights and (try to) sleep during the day? (No ... not in a coffin heh heh heh) But really, the amount of snowblowers; snow plows (backing up: "beep beep beep;") lawnmowers; leafblowers; barking dogs; traffic; you flippin' name it.

I bought myself a white-noise machine, and was using earplugs to boot. That helped. Kinda sounded like I was under water. Zzzzzzzzz sweet Zzzzzzzzz. But now I'm caring (in home) for an aging woman in early dimentia, and such sound blockers are not an option. *sigh*

Calgon simply cannot take this away.

    • Yesterday Cosmo and I had this post crossed in our heads. In this case here is what I think it is the best solution:
      1. Pick up the post that have the best momentum and that means the best number of viewers and votes.
      2. Add your friend as a collaborator thus making from the subject a single post.

This is a type of action, in my opinion, that make things work. Many times I will not be able to be here and having more than a person interested in the subject of Acoustic Pollution helping to disseminate the news, it is really a blessing.
      Thanks Cosmo!

Ps: By the way, the original news came from "NoiseOFF," in New York in which I belong to since we had no more than a dozen subscribers. All three persons mentioned in the article, Richard Tur, Dr. Hagler and Dr. Arline Bronzaft, I had the pleasure to meet personally and knowing to have gone to "thicker and thin" events in the past to teach a population often apathetic, misinformed and with lots of misconceptions about noise.

    • Noise pollution is a major problem. Think a little about the pollution we can't hear. Radio wave, microwave pollution. They are a problem too. Living too close to the powerlines will get you exposed to cancer causing pollution.

That fact is that misinformation makes people very passive and apathetic on acoustic pollution thinking that this is all normal from City Life. Well, you know the say: "On noise issues, you give a hand, they grab your arm, you give your arm, they will knock you down!"
