Hurrah for good design! I don't think it needs to be "prettier", the milk jugs we're used to seeing are no aesthetic orgasm. Although I must say, white bottles like this and soymilk cartons do cause me one woe - I can never tell when I'm running low and need to buy more.

The Canadians have been drinking milk out of a plastic bag and putting it in a special container for 20 years.
It's probably the only good thing they have ever brought to the world community.
America should look into it

this is god because it uses less plastic, but we dont need milk to live, since we were children weve been told we need it to grow and be strong. humans are the onl king that drink another animals milk, and milk is from a sweat gland. i say no to milk in general and there would be less waist that way

Bunch of idealistic idiots. A family of five, with good diet of milk and cereal and cooking, goes through a gallon a milk in mere three days. Get off your unsustainable high horse and yuppie ways. If you choose to have glass bottled milk, or home made soy delivered, make a market for it becomes a business.
And it is not any harder to pour.

A gallon of milk??
I'm miffed at how any family can get through a gallon of milk when they used to get through the glass-bottle-a-day delivered by the nice whistling milk man.
then again, I have a lactose intolerance..

Milk Carton 2.0: Don't believe the hype ... This lame iteration isn't even recyclable.
C'mon people! Any solution that involves more plastic than before isn't a solution at all.

derk:
This article doesn't mention that it is not recyclable, are you sure that it isn't? I try to never buy anything in plastic, even if it is recyclable, but it's hard. Even rice milk comes in a container lined with plastic, that isn't recycled everywhere.
This results in more milk per cubic foot, and therefore probably more plastic, so it might hurt the environment that way. Or maybe moving the same amount of milk in the old containers would use as much plastic and the difference is only in shipping and storage?

I concur with braaaain. This isn't about the product, it's about the package. We need to encourage more efficient packaging of all products. Also jawnybnsc had a relevent comment. We aren't going to be able to change everything overnight but we have to keep making the baby steps until we get to the point where we need to be. Every step we take toward taking the strain off of our over taxed natural resources does nothing but help. This will probably date me but I can still remember when the litterbug campaign started. It seemed like such a small thing at the time but I cannot imagine where we would be today without it. Not only for the enviromental impact but the level of awareness it raised.

But if you ARE going to drink milk,
1) buy it in the paper carton!
Take the plastic out of your life!2) And make sure the milk does not have
bovine growth hormone in it,
because it raises the level of pus in the milk.ewwwwww.

Why do people still drink milk... and stop shopping at Wal-Mart for the love of god! I swear...
Stop drinking milk and it wont matter what kind of carton it comes in, you don't need it, you never did and all you are doing is supporting an industry that profits from pain and death. The same goes for Wal-Mart...

I just got two gallons like these from Sam's Club. Really freaked me out when I saw them, but I immediately understood the rationale. Two complaints. They need to make those seals at the top easier too remove. I've seen this problem solved by making half of the seal pull up so that you can get a better grip. Also, the milk doesn't pour well. It spills down the side of the jug and pouring it over cereal is challenging. Add this one to fluorescent bulbs and low water use toilets to the environmentally sound ideas that need a little tweaking.

Seriously--I thought this was about a redesign of a MILK JUG and not the merits or evils of drinking milk. If anyone actually read the article, they would know that this makes it much more efficient to sell the milk.
Would I be MUCH happier if this milk was rGBH free, totally organic and all of that? OF COURSE! But this is a greener, more efficient way to bottle and sell milk and I for one am all for it.

We are the only species of animal that drinks milk beyond infancy, and from another animal. When an baby animal is misplaced or orphaned or forced it will drink from another animal, but we do it all the time; we're freaks.

Stephen, you can find Strauss Family Creamery milk at Rainbow grocery store in SF or some Whole Foods and Mollie Stones stores in the Bay Area. It is fresh, local, organic and comes in a glass bottle.
If you get a chance to try Strauss ice cream, DO IT. It is the best ice cream ever, bar none. Comes in a waxed paper container, tho. ;)
