Bush set to convert forests to houses

The deal was struck behind closed doors between Mark E. Rey, the former timber lobbyist who oversees the U.S. Forest Service, and Plum Creek Timber Co., a former logging company turned real estate investment trust that is building homes. Plum Creek owns more than 8 million acres nationwide, including 1.2 million acres in the mountains of western Montana, where local officials were stunned and outraged at the deal.
"We have 40 years of Forest Service history that has been reversed in the last three months," said Pat O'Herren, an official in Missoula County, which is threatening to sue the Forest Service for forgoing environmental assessments and other procedures that would have given the public a voice in the matter.

just be careful of signing contracts if you are a buyer/seller, my brother almost lost $5000 reserving a house, the contract he signed had a clause that if he didn't show proof of insurance and a cashiers check with the down payment by a specific date and time the "reserving money" wouldn't be re funded, nice job of the Realtor for keeping it to the last minute. As long as you can use a lawyer you can trust and deal with the owner's lawyer you'll save even more than with geico :D.

Being private or not its still a loss to something pristine. just so rich fuckers can go and visit a couple times a year. what the article is saying is the logging wasn't as bad as this is going to be with homes. people endanger wildlife example cars on highways/roads. heres the tricky part
"Plum Creek owns 57 percent of Missoula County's private land, a posture that under state law gives it veto power over any zoning. Over the decades that the Forest Service enforced limits on logging roads, the county came to regard federal policy as a firebreak against development."
this is where the lobbyist/forest service guy comes in. changing policy and allowing change to happen. all being backed backed by the Bush administration this is there stand on private ownership so this is good for Plum Creek good for economy bad for forest.

The notion that anyone can or should privately own land is at the core of Western thinking that has led the earth to this crisis.

Hmmm, I don't think that building residential housing units is preventing fires from happening in virgin forest. I think reading the whole article instead of closing ones mind after finishing the sentence would help that...also, is there any proof of this? When "secret" deals or any other type of deal for that matter are made the notice is posted. Suing seems like the best way to attack this. It could wrap up that land in limbo for years.

Have all you lunatics forgot that this land is privately owned? Do any of you understand what PRIVATE means? The owner of this land can do whatever the hell he wants, just as I can cut down trees in my back yard. Understand your rights Fortunately President Bush understands the private sector.

That's insane! It seems like Bush knows that everyone hates him, so now he is just going out in a blaze of glory. He has nothing to loose, so now he is focused on accomplishing his own ambitions.

Typical Bush regime "rape the earth so a few of my friends can make money" policy.
Seriously, if he went to war with a country so he could get Big Oil back into Iraq, do you not think he would decimate our own natural resources for a buck? Perhaps Kucinich is right. - 3 years ago

Just another example of the Bush administration's disregard for the will of the people, or at the least the notion that other people deserve a voice in this place called America. I guess we should just let lobbyists and special interests make all our decisions for us.

With our nation growing we need to save as much of the beauty of this earth that we can. And turning it into development propertires certainly doesn't seem to be the correct answer. What some people will do for the love of money is pathetic.

this is no surprise. his whole presidency has been about money, and i'm sure he's getting some from this deal. his "evildoing" knows no bounds. it's thing like this that make me wish i believed in god, so i could be safe with the knowledge that he would burn in hell for all the things he's done to this country and to thousands of men and women who no longer have the privledge of being bent over by the the leader of the free world. i will be throwing my new year's part on jan 20th when bush has his last day in office.

IF YOU’RE NOT OUTRAGED-YOU’RE JUST NOT PAYING ATTENTION!
The next 5 months are a crucial time for anybody that cares about any aspect of our country. Madmen are running & ruining the America at every opportunity, selling our vital nat'l resource & public land to the highest bidder. I don’t care if it’s legal or not. The U.S. is setting itself up for a crisis in every aspect of our society, leaving no one unharmed by political decisions that will have ramifications for generations to come.
They are not even making an attempt to get a handle on our economy in a prudent-citizen’s interest comes first-manner. WE NEED TO PUSH THE PANIC BUTTON AT THIS POINT! We’re going from bad to worse before even taking into account the war & a trade deficit imbalance that is so precarious that our economy is seems to be teetering on the brink of collapse. We are being taken for a ride & it’s not over yet! There are so many foreclosed homes & vacant alternatives: apts, condos, etc that I cringe every time I hear more of this insane mortgage & housing mismanagement. Future generations will ultimately suffer the most by being burdened with monumental debt, massive climate change issues (where currently oil is the sole solution) while green initiatives meet constant roadblocks & hurdles. It is truly unbelievable how the current administration keeps making profit motivated decisions to benefit a few at the expense of millions of people. We have so much at stake right now that the shear magnitude makes it incomprehensible. There is no time more crucial than right now for us to minimize the overwhelming danger facing our once great country. Please do your part to try to understand the issues & consequences & act according to the best possible outcome.

With all the housing already available and vacant...why doesnt bush seek a way to fix up abandoned buildings or areas that need attention.Throughout the states there are many places where buildings, and neighborhoods need fixing up.Lets do that first...then we can see what happens and what is needed when thats all done.

That would be out of the special interests of those looking to build McMansions with McViews and McPrivateRivers. I am sure there is no clause for affordable housing or public schools. Wonder how many McCasinos will be nearby. And poor Abramoff has to be in prison when this could have been his glory hour.
Teddy Roosevelt did not have this in mind. Not at all. He would be in court right now for the misuse of his name and legacy. I would be interested to research whether any of this is protected land. Private Ibber - 3 years ago

Every time I goes to the news i just hope Bushie is gone dead and I don't really care how he went or where or when just as long as he is gone off this planet. If someone is personally responsible I would thank them and give them a rewad. This leader is nothing but a very evil killer who belongs in prison.

That's funny. With tens of thousands of empty forclosed houses, perhaps stupido might suggest that we reconstitute the forests from unused homes.
Don't we already have more houses than our people can afford. I'm guessing the lumber from the last of our forests will be sold to China and another of stupido's friends will make millions from that which use to belong to The People, untill the sheeple allowed the supreme court to install stupido, and all his rich friends were given the wealth of our great nation to plunder.
Shame on the fools in America who have allowed their children's futures to be sold th the highest bidder.

Is it better for this land to go undeveloped, and burn (creating an environment disaster), then to house people.
Forest fires are an environment disaster, the Green Nazi's refuse to acknowledge.
Now with the grace of GOD through global warming, the tundra is going to become forest replacing the forest being used in this project. Bush is doing a good thing.
GOD through his infinate wisdom, has seen fit to creat more warm climate in the northern hemisphere to accommodate the world's increasing population.
Of course, New York might turn into another Venice with gondolas instead of cabs. New Yorkers will adjust. Think of the romance of the gondolas. It will be interesting.
Bush is concerned about the environmental disaster caused by forest fires, while housing the people. I consider this noble.
Have you ever noticed that the highly populated Northeast United States suffer fewer forest fires?
