US backs statin use for children

Children in the UK with a rare gene fault can get statins, but the American Academy of Pediatrics is going further.
It wants to see the drugs used in thousands more children with high cholesterol levels, despite little information about long-term safety.
A UK specialist said he did not support widespread statin use for children."

A pill isn't the answer... they need recess back (yeah play out side)
Activity I think is the biggest difference, it isn't as safe to play outside anymore and games make kids sit still.
Here is news about it this very idea... (more in link above):
A bill introduced by Rep. John McCoy, D-Tulalip, would require that all public schools in the state provide K-12 students with an hour a day of physical activity. Participation in after-school athletics programs would not count toward the requirement.McCoy said the bill is a response to some school districts' cutting back students' recess time to try to boost scores on the WASL, a statewide test administered to various grade levels to assess how well students are learning math, reading, writing and science.
"I'm saying, 'No, you can't eliminate physical activity for the WASL,' " McCoy said. "Especially these K-5 kids, they need to get out. We have concerns that their weight is getting rather large. There are various ways to get it done, but the idea is you need to keep them moving."

Well, we could always add more time for P.E., recess, and health classes in primary school as well as sellling less junk food. Even though it might not do a whole lot, I still don't think the pills are a good idea. Do we know if it's okay for the children's growth?
I know the schools in my district are not doing well with P.E. classes because of the way that the class is being taught. so...idk? maybe we can change the way teachers teach? - 3 years ago

it used to be that the boy / girl scouts was where kids in this country learned how to be real humans , and not couch scum . parents in this country need to become actively involved in both . the only other option is petitioning the gov't to exert even further censorship of the hollywood machine which is killing our children .

Doctors are bought and sold by the drug industry. Why do you think that beautiful women, in very short skirts are sent in to sell to Dr. Buffoons? The doctors get free trips, dinners, paid to represent certain products, etc. etc. etc. They deserve no more respect than attorneys or car salesmen! They are simply, whores paid to reccommend the drug industries, latest product.

Another indictment of the Standard American Diet (S.A.D). We might as well hook our children up to a High Frucose Corn Syrup drip and save the the trouble of actually chewing our so-called food. It is easy to be overfeed and malnurished in the USA.

How about people take responsibiliy for themselves and their children???
The government has absolutely nothing to do with the fact of obesity in the US and elsewhere.
People are fat because they choose that lifestyle. Period and no, I do NOT believe there is any basis in reality for genetic fatness. There may be family propensities to fat but those have 100% to do with lifestyle, eating and exercise choices, not with genes necessarily.
As for those who have no time to exercise, BS. You have time to get off the bus two stops earlier and walk; you have time to NOT EAT CRAP; you have time to go for a 30 minute walk at noon rather than gorging yourself on garbage fast food.
"I don't have time," means I can't be bothered to make the effort.

How about the government makes sure every neighbourhood has access to fresh fruits and vegetables? How about the doctors tell parents how to cook for their children properly, how to tell the kids to go outside, and how to say NO? So many parents let their kids run the house with impunity because they want to be their kid's best friend. it's society all backwards!

Why can't we get our Governments to STOP screwing up the environment and our resources so that we will STOP getting bizarre unnatural illnesses so that we won't need to even consider these heinous drugs.
By creating our own chemical-based environment and changing our human evolution to fit it (drugs to fix drug side-affects and drug, chemical, and environmentally created health conditions) we're stepping farther and farther away from our ability to cope with what is natural in our world -- a natural evolution. It's too bad there's so much money to be made keeping us sick.

Being fat is neither bizarre or unnatural.
If you overeat and you don't move you will be fat, period.
NO, you're not a tiny bit round if you're 50lbs overweight.
An average woman should be wearing a size 8.. Not 16 or 20, 8.
And average man should be wearing a size 32 - 34 jean or pant waste. Not 42.
A child should look like a child. If they have rolls that is not normal. That is fat.
The amount of meat one should eat at a serving is equal to the size of your palm. YEAH! three ounces!. The amount of pasta is 1/2 - 1 Cup! NOT an entire plate full!
The amount of bread a person should consume a day is 2 slices.
Sugar? don't eat it. Candy bars are NOT FOOD.
Soft drinks??? NONE! These are NOT FOOD. There are 12 teaspoons of sugar in a SMALL soft drink. 12!!!
Fruit and veg? Go for it! These are FOOD.
It is not the government's responsibility to tell you that you're overeating and under exercising. It is YOUR body. Look after it.

I was waiting for you to chime in on this Carolyn. Your knowledge and experience on these subjects are, as usual, spot on. I think it is a very dangerous trend to prescribe medicine or drugs to conditions that can be solved by safer means. This seems to be yet another example of the pharma industry trying to cash in, with backing from the government. This is a frightening trend.

They hide these from us...the meda is propaganda for the drug companies!!! The FDA is in bed with them. They are all disgusting scum of the earth.
I chose this comment because it sounds very similar to what my previously healthy, robust 90 year old father had when he died....may have been the cancer but I am not sure that was all after speaking with a lawyer knowledgeable in class action lawsuits.

Joint pain, SEVERE muscle pain - especially in lower calfs of both legs. Some mornings I had a hard time walking. Didn't lower cholesterol much. Be Very Very Careful using this drug and other statins. This bad stuff sneaks up on you and - BAM - you could be in BIG trouble! Was on this and then Zocor for a total of 3 months. When I thought I was having a heart attack they admitted me to emergency room and overnight stay. No real heart problems - but weak heart muscle - likely cause of Lipitor. Lower legs have been hurting for over one year since I stopped taking meds. Doctors just conducted biopsy of leg muscle because it is inflamed and waiting for results. Likely not good. Also much fatigue then - and now. DO NOT TAKE STATINS - and if you do I hear the CQ10 is a good protector for some of the muscle damage that the statins can cause. Too late for me, I think, as the damage is done and permanent. - 3 years ago

Absolutely disgusting. The US population is far too medicated already.
Children need to be outside playing, biking, running about. They also need to eat food - not crap, twinkies, anything wrapped, anything packaged. Children also need to have adults who have the baseline motivation to feed themselves and their children properly.
It should be a requirement that doctors prescribe good food and daily exercise to children before those doctors prescribe drugs - which always have myriad bad side effects.
Children's bodies are growing and changing and the last thing they need is drugs that interfere with their proper growth! It should be illegal for docs to prescribe these types of drugs to children, but Big Pharma will NEVER let that happen because there's far too much $$$ at stake. Don't ever be fooled into believeing that any drug manufacturer has your best interests at heart! That's just utter weirdness.
Want proof? see "Restless Leg Syndrom" a 'condition' that turned up about 4 years ago. Jumpy legs. Cause? Iron deficiency. Cure - and yeah, I said cure - more iron, meaning broccoli, spinach, bananas, leafy vegetables, romaine lettus, daily multivitamins.... Big Pharma's cure? Drugs (with all sorts of side effects) that cost something like $80 a week.....
The US population must get over it's blindness to fat. The whole country is disgustingly overweight, over-medicated, undereducated and down right full of droids.

Take a look at this link and see if you want your children on a statin drug. Read page 4 of the article about statins, but also peruse the rest. It tells how the drug companies manipulate results.http://discovermagazine.com/2008/jul/20-wonder-drugs-that-can-kill/article_view?...:int=1&-C=

There are more kids staying in doors than going outside to play. Between video games, the computer, and text massaging, kids don't have to go outside to talk to their friends.
When I was growing up, Saturday morning after cartoons it was time to go outside. Kids don't go out until late.
We can't let medicate kids or adults for every little thing. This is the new wave drug addiction.
Look at all the pharmaceutical ads on tv now. Why?Just remember that quick fix now, can lead to Problems later!

There are two sides to every story and there are negatives and positives.

Yes.
And American was founded on people who looked around for an example.
There some things that you just risk to do because it's worth it than the alternative. Sometimes you don't. It's your choice.
But this idea of exercise and yadda yadda....isn't possible when it's just a word and nothing has been implemented. This isn't a quick fix. This is a fix to help those that are over the line. If you have children than are getting to the point where they are fat then make them run.
But there are others that are not within that range. They get depressed and unmotivated and if you ever spoke to a depress person, a depress child is worse.
Medication isn't always the answer. But in helping people it's far better to help than to sit and do nothing.

Yes. And parents will state that they don't want their child kidnapped or taken from them by simply playing outside (as has happened).
People like to fantasize about the past and how kids were so free and smart and skinny....but they fail to also bring into account there were not as many creeps who snatched kids out of their front yard and do terrible things to them.
One has to understand that it isn't simply OMG video games and TV and computers...it's also a sense of protection, maybe.
I agree that children should exercise. But with these stupid standardized test they take away PE or Recess and the kids don't do anything but sit around in school all day. Parents are partially to blame, sure, but so is the Schools who pander to this idea that testing children like this makes them smart.
