Support the development of national and state laws, regulations and policies that specifically reduce the use of rBGH or rBST in milk and dairy production in the United States,
Work collaboratively with other nursing organizations and hospital and healthcare organizations to eliminate purchasing milk and dairy products for use in the health care industry that contain artificial hormones such as recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) and any other food containing inappropriate additives,
Educate nurses regarding the known and projected harmful effects of the use of food additives, rBGH and other hormones and antibiotics in milk and dairy production and in agriculture,
Support the public's right to know through support of appropriate food labeling including country-of-origin and genetic modification, and of nutritional information for food served in institutions, restaurants, and fast food chains

This is great. Hopefully we will see more organizations lining up to denounce Monsanto and its deception. I am going to be contacting my board of education as well, because I don't want to see children served milk in school lunches and milk programs that have these hormones in them. We have to stand up together as healthcare professionals, parents, educators, and citizens to companies like Monsanto that push poison for a profit and the FDA that covers for them in lieu of protecting the health of Americans.

Something is seriously ascew with this site and it's vote tabulation. I wonder if monsanto and Massey energy don't have a room full of people being paid min. wage to leave neg. comments and votes all over the web? Seems to me current may have the corporate hand stuck up the puppets ass.

I noticed a few days ago an article talking about the design of milk jug got on current tv. I commented then and repeat; the outside container is not that big of news compared to the health effects/or non healthiness of the so called [milk] inside the jug. (I have a difficult time calling the genetically engineered white stuff milk.)

It is all so surreal sounding. However, I know too well about the actual reality from all these additives. There are so many children who have more allergies than ever. I'm even tended to think about why children are going through puberty younger than ever now. There must be so much more medically linked to these tainted foods. And being an RN, I am proud to have an association who is standing up...way to go!!

All the additional hormones within our foods and water are causing a much earlier onset on menarchy in girls and leading to much higher rates of cancers in everyone. Bisphenol-A, which is an estrogen mimic, has finally recently made it to the public eye. I am glad to see the additional sources of hormones in our diets are coming to light.

Monsanto and other companies could not wield the power they do unless government agencies were shielding them and they were buying their way in. And that is absolutely undemocratic and criminal. The health and safety of our people, particularly our children is at stake here. And yes, Nurses rock!

Geez... a Pelican Brief indeed!! Thanks for connecting those dots, Jan -- every time we turn over a rock and expose the light of day to the filthy underbellies of these same people who keep coming up in all kinds of nasty places, over and over again, we make it harder for them to continue pulling the wool over our collective eyes.

You can send me any pertinent info you find, I'll be looking as well. This is an important issue, it involves those most precious in the landscape of change, Our Children!
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, although I had already been aware of the use of hormones in foods, this made it that much clearer how important it is to utilize the information that is out there to make changes in our local communities. Most people don't even know about this topic here where I live.

More on BGH from the Humane Farming Association.
Pharmaceutical companies have spent millions of dollars developing genetically engineered hormones. Now that BGH has become an integral part of dairy farming, these drug companies are reaping even greater profits.
BGH also stimulates drug company profits by increasing the sale of other pharmaceuticals. As BGH forces cows to produce more milk than is healthy for their bodies, the cows become more susceptible to infection and disease. This, in turn, creates additional needs for antibiotics and other drugs, which these companies are all too happy to provide.
FDA Suppresses Information
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Monsanto’s BGH – commercial name “Posilac” – in November 1993, supposedly after an extensive review of the product’s safety and efficacy. However, dozens of scientific studies conducted before and after the drug’s approval suggest the existence of several serious animal and human health concerns. The controversy surrounding BGH has renewed public concern about the integrity of the FDA. The very agency that should be protecting the nation's food supply has actively worked with drug companies to suppress information about BGH that would put the hormone in a negative light. The FDA violated its own internal policies in helping the pharmaceutical industry reap the profits of genetic engineering.
Dr. Richard Burroughs was a staff veterinarian and senior scientist at the FDA overseeing the analysis of industry-sponsored tests on BGH. He raised a number of questions about the safety of BGH and about the approval process his agency was using. Dr. Burroughs reported that:
Cows treated with BGH have higher than normal levels of reproductive problems.
Their udders show an increased tendency to become infected.
The FDA did not assign reviewers with the expertise needed to evaluate the data.
Adequate human health studies of the effects of BGH had not been conducted.
Ultimately, Dr. Burroughs was fired. "I was told that I was slowing down the approval process. It used to be that we had a review process at the FDA. Now we have an approval process. I don't think the FDA is doing good, honest reviews. They've become an extension of the drug industry."
The firing of Dr. Burroughs sent a powerful message to others working within the FDA who might have raised similar concerns.

Thanks Mafioso. I've only found two milk brands so far that state they do not have it: Tuscan and Farmland Dairies. I am making a point of checking it all out, and that includes meat. The hormones will be in beef as well if given to cows.

I am the 5th viewer and this is already at 80% vote up and 20% vote down?
How is that? I am not great at math, but that just seems strange (to me).
Anyway, I voted it up.
I will be back in a few with more comments, I just wanted to note this?

Bush & Monsanto
The information below is from Robert Cohen, Executive Director of the Dairy Education Board. (http://www.notmilk.com). It shows how the corporations control our government so as to continue to dilute and even poison our food supply in the name of profit.
John Grisham wrote the best selling novel, the Pelican Brief. Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington starred in the blockbuster movie in which two Supreme Court justices are assassinated so that an evil oil billionaire can petition the president to appoint environmentally unfriendly justices to America's highest court. It's all about politics, multi-national firms, and dollars.
Today's Pelican Brief
In 1994, Monsanto Agricultural Company gained approval for their genetically engineered bovine growth hormone. That hormone became the most controversial drug application in the history of America's Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Monsanto's hormone caused cancer in laboratory animals, and was banned in Europe and Canada. Monsanto's genetically engineered crops continue to make headline news throughout the world, and their patented seeds have become the seeds of controversy.
In the 2000 election, Monsanto donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in PAC money and soft money to political candidates. The man receiving the second highest total dollars from Monsanto was Larry Combest (R-TX). He got $2000. Combest is the powerful Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.
Who got the most from Monsanto? The winner of the Monsanto sweepstakes with $10,000 was John Ashcroft (R-MO). Ashcroft will be George Bush's Attorney General.
Follow the Monsanto connection to George Bush's presidency. This brief will be more convincing than Grisham's Pelican Brief.
FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT
Monsanto's lawyer was appointed to the Supreme Court by George Bush, Sr. The deciding swing voter gave the election to George, Jr. That justice: Clarence Thomas, Esq.SECOND
Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense, was president of Searle Pharmaceuticals, purchased by Monsanto.THIRD
Ann Veneman, Secretary of Agriculture, was on the board of directors of Calgene Pharmaceuticals, purchased by Monsanto.FOURTH
Tommy Thompson, Secretary of Health, was a supporter of Monsanto in Wisconsin. He received $50,000 from biotech firms is his election run, and used state funds to set up a $317 million biotech zone in Wisconsin.FIFTH
Mitch Daniels, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, was the vice president of corporate strategy at Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Company. Eli Lilly and Monsanto developed the genetically engineered bovine growth hormone. Lilly "owns" the European "franchise." Daniels' presence insures that the bovine growth hormone will one day be approved for use in Europe.SIXTH
The House of Representatives Agriculture Committee Chairman, Larry Combest (R-TX), named Richard Pombo to head Agriculture's dairy, livestock, and poultry sub-committee. Pombo will have enormous power in chairing this committee. In 1994, the Dairy Committee considered a bill that would label milk and milk products containing the genetically engineered hormone. The Dairy Committee stalled the proposed bill until the 1994 elections. When the 1994 session of Congress expired, the bill died. It was never even voted upon. A subsequent investigation of Pombo revealed that he accepted money directly from Monsanto while voting on a bill that impacted Monsanto's future, and the future of biotechnology.SEVENTH
Last, but not least. John Ashcroft, Attorney General. The one man out of 535 members of the House of Representatives and the Senate receiving the greatest amount of financial support from Monsanto. He received five times the amount of money as the congressman finishing second.Where do Americans finish in this stranger than fiction real-life drama?
