Al Gore Gives a Groundbreaking Speech And?
And what do we see in response? Well, on Current.com we see nothing. No coverage. No updates. No discussion. Just the same insignifcant fluff stories climbing up the list as people go about their usual business paying no mind to the state of this world. Just the cut and paste to get the votes to get them on tv. And what do we see in this media? The usual condemnation and playing to the right in this country that has done nothing but sabotage any real environmental progress we could have regarding this issue.
I see this as a challenge along the lines of Thomas Paine's Common Sense where he challenged the colonists to stand up to an empire to build a country that was free of the ties that bound it to the same ignorance and treachery we see in this country today. I see a challenge that can awaken the imagination and soul, and make a cleaner safer world for our children. A place where dollars go for sustainability and peace, as opposed to pollution and perpetual war.
This isn't about Conservative or Liberal. This isn't about anyone's ego. This is about the future sustainability of the only planet that can sustain us. And yet, nothing. Just the same political partisan rancor we see in our Congress, and the same nonchalant we'll get to it tomorrow attitude that has gotten us to where we are today.
So as a longtime member of this site, but more importantly as someone who has read the data, the scientific reports, and seen for myself the current state of this world and how our actions are affecting it, I am deeply disappointed with Current.com today and actually with Americans in general. I surely hope the message Mr. Gore gave today can and will reach those who can look beyond the political and even the economic to see our place in history and the tremendous responsibility we have to make amends to this Earth. And yes, I know some detractors who may read this will not be able to keep themselves from spouting the usual invectives, and that's OK. I am more than capable of ignoring it. Like Al Gore, a man I love and respect who stepped out on a stage to tell the truth of it and all else be damned because this planet is that important, I figured I would do the same and frankly, I don't give a damn what anyone thinks of it.
This speech gave me hope that we are capable of a better future because it is possible. Shame that isn't considered real news here.

I am excited to find your upload and share your concern. Let's stop griping and send the Al Gore video to all your friends and inspire them to sign on. That's what I did and I am doing the same with the hope and excitement I feel for our changing political diorama. People like Barak Obama, Al Gore, Van Jones, Dennis Kucinich, are all inspiring and I am resolved to be on the bright side! Stay with me and keep reminding people that we are the change!

Hemp can be used as a short term solution to the climate change challenge, simultaneously increasing soil carbon, locking carbon into raw materials and replacing unsustainable raw materials across several industries. It is an adaptable, hardy, multi-purpose crop that can play an important role in reducing and repairing human environmental damage.
Since accurate records began in 1850, atmospheric CO2 had increased from pre-industrial levels of 280 parts per million (ppm) to 360 ppm, by 2000. Emitted in a historically short period, this represents an enormous 42% increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. An analysis of future global trends in greenhouse gas emissions has shown that if we continue at the present rate, by 2100 this figure will rise to 540-970 ppm. It is clear that the situation is serious and needs immediate attention Fossil fuel consumption and unsustainable land use conversions can be considered the most responsible for climate change. Around 80% of the CO2 being added to the atmosphere each year currently comes directly from the burning of natural gas, and coal and oil deposits. Combustion of fossil fuel releases their carbon content into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide gas (CO2), increasing the total quantity of CO2 in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide has the capacity to trap energy from sunlight, the so-called 'Greenhouse Effect'
Hemp is far less vulnerable to changes in climate compared to slow to medium growth forests and still has the most useful biochemical characteristics of hardwood. In addition, hemp is a very versatile crop, not just in terms of use value, but also in terms of how it can be managed by farmers. Growing hemp on deforested hillsides prevent landslides, run-off and also prepares land for future crops or reforestation. Large scale tree planting is not feasible without providing an immediate and sustainable alternative to forest resources used by the majority of the worlds population for cooking heating and raw materials. Hemp produces several metric tons of versatile biomass per hectare annually or bi-annually in hotter climates, potentially protecting old growth forests.

Nice Jan-
Lou Dobbs is right, the collective mind of the US is in the toilet. Too bad he's perpetuating the problem, that old ragged douche...
Don't be discouraged Jan. One way or the other, things WILL change. Weather it's through people waking up from their advertising induced slumber or weather it's from large companies learning that green makes green, it will happen.
Smile, it's contagious!
Love ya Jan!!!!

ifm: I didn't type this because I think Current is Al Gore's station. I typed this because Current touts not being like the mainstream media which gives you the one way dialogue and doesn't cover the truth nor educates us. It is bad enough that everytime Mr. Gore gives a speech it is either not covered or the MSM cable news cover about ten minutes and then switches over. They did it yesterday too... I was sitting down with my son to take a look at MSNBC and they switched to John McCain. And it was so ironic that the live stream on CNN on the Internet was sponsored by Bank of America, the financial backer of the coal industry. Current is the one place I hoped to see this important speech about the planet free of MSM BS based on the fact that our media seems to think him and this important message irrelevant.
And as for posting something that can get 90 hits or whatever in a day, the post I made regarding the announcement of this speech had exactly that and was nowhere to be found. I also can't sit all day cutting and pasting as it appears some who always make it to the frontpage lately with four or five posts at once from Yahoo news can do. My point is, if I can see it on Yahoo why would I want to see it here? I want to see here what I won't see on Yahoo or CNN and especially FOX.
But again, as I have been told here by certain people, there are more important things than the environment... And I suppose those things include oogling "boobs", S&M dolls, people who are sexually perverse and other assorted Entertainment Tonight type stories. I expected better from this site to be honest because I see the quality of the stories changing. I am just grateful for the few good and informative postings I do see here and the few people I read here whom I know are serious about important issues as well, this being one of them.

Good for him.
What he says is common sense, and it is appalling how little real press he's getting and how much anger it's generating in people like Lou Dobbs.
Did anyone catch Lou Dobbs editorial tirade against Al Gore's initiative being an abstract concept out of touch with the average American on CNN last night? Outrageous.

All you really need to do if want Al Gore's Speech to get attention is title it "Look at these boobs" or "big penis" or maybe something obscure like "Do you count your poop?" At least it will get many clicks to open even if they don't read it. kinda sad. I have been tempted, for months now, to try this experiment.

Maybe we are failing to understand the demographics and that it is mostly kids and half way adults that is running the show right now. Dad and Mom is at work and when they come home, they probably will have no energy to get in front of a computer and read the news if it is not something serious.

not playing devils advocate (?), but current is not Al Gore's tv station, it is a website that hosts videos (WE NEED MORE PODS) and people vote on what interests them, all mixed up with current events and news, related to politics directly or indirectly, of course. having said that, it is up to us to post something (video?) that would get more than 90 hits in one day; staying within CURRENT RULES

I agree with you Jan. It seems business as usual, the race to the bottom.
I don't understand why this challenge does not wake people up. Even those who are not believers in climate change should be on board with this because of its economic implications.
While we are debating about drilling for more oil offshore and in ANWR -- neither of which will impact gas prices for 10 years and that impact will be extremely slight at best and probably not at all -- many other countries are making strides in renewable energy.
Europe is taking a leadership position. They are building floating wind turbines (http://current.com/items/89108388_floating_wind_turbines_poised_to_harness_ocean...) and the UK just added the first tidal power turbine to their electric grid (http://current.com/items/89112918_first_tidal_power_turbine_gets_plugged_in).
All this while our government is talking about more oil that will not make a dent in energy independence or jobs.
And the impact of all this is that we are missing a massive opportunity to be at the forefront of a massive global industry. We will be importing technology and following the leadership of other countries.
Al Gore issued a bold challenge to a government that is too afraid to take bold action. They can't think about 10 years from now. They need to think about their next campaign. Its a race to the bottom.

Thanks stopnoise, and Jubal, I think you're right, but it is more than that. Al Gore should be important as a man challenging the status quo. And he is one of many delivering this message, but was one of the first to warn us. How would we have fared all those years ago if Thomas Jefferson had written the Declaration of Independence and it was filed in the trash because the Continental Congress in Philadelphia lost their nerve? But they didn't do that because they saw the higher purpose and realized that the trepidation and fear they felt were not as important as the task at hand. That is where we are at now with our planet. This is such an important message that goes beyond partisan hate and bickering and even money. we always have money to fight wars, and the same who will trash Al Gore for his vision see no problem with that so you know it really isn't about money to them. Oh well... now I wait to see which "presidential" candidate comes forward to support Al Gore on this... I have a feeling the silence will be deafening.

Right on Jan, I don't think Al Gore is as important to Current as he used to be, even though he did have a hand in starting the thing.
