Young, fast-developing bodies are influenced most.
Children are more susceptible to allergies.
Children are more susceptible to problems with milk.
Children are more susceptible to nutritional problems.
Children are in danger from antibiotic resistant diseases.
(For more information, watch a preview of Hidden Dangers in Kids' Meals: Genetically Engineered Foods, read a review of Hidden Dangers in Kid's Meals; or read Genetically Engineered Foods Pose Higher Risk for Children or the Spilling the Beans article Another Reason for Schools to Ban Genetically Engineered Foods.)
Schools throughout the UK and parts of Europe banned GM food years ago. In the 1990s, many Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in the U.S. rallied against rbGH and more than a hundred school districts banned milk from rbGH-treated cows. Wisconsin dairy farmer John Kinsman describes the method he used to inspire several schools: "I simply talked to parents of small children. Once mothers heard about this, they didn't rest until their school made the commitment."
The emergence of the “healthy school lunch” movement in the U.S. today provides a ready platform to promote GM-free school meals. Parents and schools are already seeking to change kids’ diets in response to the obesity and diabetes epidemics, the proliferation of ADD/ADHD, and the increased understanding of the impact of food and behavior. Several school systems have made sweeping changes to their meal programs, and new parents are consistently the largest group of new buyers of organic food each year.
In addition, the US government has taken steps to upgrade school nutritional standards - the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, for example, states that all school districts with a federally funded school meals program develop and implement wellness policies that address, among other things, nutrition and nutrition education by the start of the 2006-07 school year.

Parent Actions
1. Educate yourself, and stay informed.
A good place to start is with this website, as well as the Institute’s publications, and in particular the Hidden Dangers in Kids’ Meals video, which presents a compelling case for the dangers of GM foods to children of all ages. Plus sign up for our newsletter, Spilling the Beans, to stay up-to-date on the issues.
2. Educate your child(ren).
For older children, consider showing them the Hidden Dangers in Kids’ Meals video. We are compiling other material that can be used in the home or school, that describes the issues for various age groups.
3. Make your home GM-free.
Use the Buying Non-GM Shopping List to identify what food items you’re currently buying contain GM ingredients and what items you can purchase to replace them.
4. Speak with other parents.
We recommend sharing the Hidden Dangers in Kids’ Meals video with other parents you know. You can do this one-on-one or invite a group of parents to watch the video and discuss possible follow-up action.
5. Get involved in a local GM-Free Schools campaign.
See Supporting Local GM-Free Schools Campaign Efforts, above.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are ways to have the power to choose what you and your children eat. This is just a start. And you can check with your Board of Education before the next school year to find out what they serve children in school on lunch programs. You have the right to know, but you have to get involved.
I attended some of the grass roots organizing retreats back in the late 80's that he helped organize through what is called today celdf.org. I googled him and found he is still involved in that, and has some great resources for local communities to access.
Here is a quote from Richard Grossman and it makes lots of sense...
It's funny, we did not set out to become experts on the corporation," he says. "We set out to try to discover why it is that the activist work of so many good and able people around the country for so many decades had not brought about the kinds of changes that people had been hoping for. Why is it--after so many years of so many groups fighting toxic chemicals and winning, passing laws, and closing dumps, and doing all kinds of good things--that every day more toxic chemicals are produced than the day before? We saw that power was being concentrated even more in corporate boardrooms. The ideal of democracy was moving further out of reach. And by most objective criteria--the wealth gap, public health, the environment, workers' rights--things were getting worse."
There was a huge fundraiser put on in my town for the exclusion of GM food in local schools and only 150 tickets were sold. It's a really important issue and its like people can't be bothered with it. And we're wondering where the increase in autism and learning disorders is coming from.
I think you're onto something there. And ADHD as well. How much of what is affecting our children's health brought on by what they eat as a baby? How much of the obesity epidemic we are seeing is being brought on by such foods? I suspect there is more to this than we will ever be told.
Yes to you both, on the health comments.
Also re: the general apathy of folks, is one of the biggest issues we face as a nation today.
"although Americans still give ritual lip-service to democracy, the concept has lost much of its meaning. In fact, it has become boring and irrelevant in most people's lives."
[above] quoted from the book Trust Us We're Experts
by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauberwhen push comes to shove, most people won't place food safety, as a priority in life. Sure is it given lip service and they will all agree that they want good safe food, but as stated in your comment "150 tickets sold",,,,,and that my friends is the problem.
The same problem existed back in the 80's when we tried to campaign against chemical companies; that issue only has continued to become larger.
I'm actually allergic to soy, so I'm constantly reading ingredients. It's frightening to see all the ingredients in food that you don't know what it is. I personally like to know what I'm eating and know whether or not it's genetically modified. It's also strange that I used to eat soy, but I developed the allergy a few years ago and over the past years my allergy has been getting worse and worse. I wonder if this allergy was caused by genetically modified soy.
Unfermented soy is really the one to watch out for. It zaps the zinc in your body and has been linked to thyroid problems. It is said that fermented soy is best for consumption. I don't know what kind of soy you were eating, but if it was unfermented that may have caused your allergy.
I'd rather have a french fry made from a naturally grown potato and cooked in NON GMO oil than to eat a salad made with franken vegetables any day.
This sounds like it could use a closer. Can anyone suggest some links or books? Do they have to label food products in the U.S. as GM?
The Monsanto tag here has plenty of information. Seeds of Deception by Jeffrey Smith is a good start. And currently it is not a "requirement" to label foods as GMO in the US, which is actually the problem. Monsanto and their cohorts in the US govt. are trying to stop such labelling from being required, which makes this all the more diabolical in motive. Why try to stop labelling products as GMO if we have nothing to fear from them?
Considering that the majority of soy in processed foods in this country is GM soy, what are the chances babies are getting it in their soy baby formula? And with the health effects of GM soy not disclosed, how are parents to know if the formula they are feeding their baby is GM soy if it is not disclosed on the label?
For the life of me I do not understand why so many people seem to think this unimportant. Millions of babies everyday are fed with soy formula and if it is GM soy, the risks of allergies, asthma, and other ailments are present.This deception is so huge, and these companies particularly Monsanto do not even care what you are feeding your babies as long as they rake in the profits.
.
From the article:75 to 89
Percentage of soybeans grown in North America that are genetically modified. Even if you are actively avoiding GM foods, GM soy is present in approximately 60 per cent of processed foods - usually as filler or oil. Neither Canada nor the United States requires any safety testing on GM food products, despite findings of toxicity and cancer-promoting properties.
115
Celsius temperature to which soy beans are heated in the production of commercial soy milk in an attempt to remove trypsin inhibitors (they interfere with protein digestion and have been linked to pancreatic disorders), but the phytate content remains largely intact. (Phytates block the absorption of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and especially zinc in the intestinal tract.)
5
The equivalent number of birth-control pills a day that babies fed exclusively on soy formula would be consuming, according to a British toxicologist’s calculations. (Components of soy called isoflavones produce estrogen-like effects in the body, and as a result are sometimes called phytoestrogens.) Thirty to 40 per cent of babies in the United States are fed soy formula.'
Yes the soy issue has been one that industry has managed to gradually over time gain a full blown strong hold on our food system. Even at it's best soy products have less than favorable reviews. However, now that GMO has entered into the equation, it poses even greater dangers.
Again connect the dots....soy is used in so, so many foods today, and now it is reported that GMO soy (because of food shortages) will be substituted more and more in our food. I know you know that Jan; just my own comment in support of yours.
Yes, you can't touch anything in the store without seeing soy or soy lechitin as an ingredient.... And thanks for your comment supporting mine. ;-) Matter of fact I think I read that the USDA just "deregulated" another soy plant for Monsanto and it is waiting approval. I will have to find that. We are being held hostage to these corporations for our food and it is being put on the market without our consent or knowledge of the source. We are basically guinea pigs out here.
