First solar heated community in Canada - another first for Alberta

The Drake Landing Solar Community consists of 52 1500 square foot houses and 800 solar panels shining proudly from garage roofs. This is a first for North America, but the Okotoks community is even greener than you think.

    • It is great to see. I am curious to find out what one of those houses are worth, but with 51/52 homes already occupied I'm thinking getting one isn't likely. If things go well with this project, rumor is they will continue to build more.

Enbridge and Suncor, who have been putting up the wind turbines have designated approximately $100 million for this type of project and are working on putting up more as we speak.

I know that land owners receive a significan amount of money for each gas well they have on their land. I think those same landowners will find that wind turbines would be much more profitable for them as well.

Thank you all for your support and comments!

    • I love articles like this -- and I'm hoping this is the beginning of a snowball effect, and that many more of these communities will emerge, until we tip the balance and significantly reduce our dependence on Middle East oil -- maybe even within Al Gore's 10-year proposal!!

    • It's always exciting to hear about new techniques being discovered to store energy and heat. The heated liquid glycol storage idea is fantastic. A method to store heat for long periods of time without requiring electricity.... genius.

    • Probably because we've been in the business of tearing down instead of building up for the past 7+ years. Depressing isn't it?!
