Physicists believe that some solar flares may be caused by theoretical dark matter particles spewing out from the centre of the sun.

The particles are known as axions, and were theorised in the 1970's to explain why we observe much more matter in the universe than theories predict. Now a team of Greek scientists believe they have reconciled observations of solar flares with the presence of these particles: essentially it is to do with the amount and the nature of X-ray radiation which is emitted by solar flares which are proposed to be caused by bursts of these axions.
