Sarah Palin's Environmental Record

Tina Fey look-alike Sarah Palin was chosen to be the Republican vice-presidential candidate today. The Alaska governor, who's been in office a scant two years, seems to participate in a disturbing mode of anti-green Alaskan thought. I don't know whether it's because they get paid up there when the oil companies make money, or because there's so much wild land that they can't imagine the possibility of running out of "nature," or because they use so much gas getting to and from their woodland cabins and don't want to have to feel guilty about it; regardless, Alaskans, and hence, Alaskan elected officials have a habit of being pretty brown in their thinking. (Pissed off green Alaskans, feel free to comment and prove me wrong.)

The specifics of Palin's enviro-record:

*As the blog Red, Green and Blue points out, she has gone on record as one of those people who still believe that global warming may not be an anthropogenic phenomenon ("I'm not one though who would attribute it [global warming] to being man-made," quoth she). Interestingly, McCain himself has acknowledged that climate change is anthropogenic.

*I wrote on this blog a couple weeks ago about Palin's leadership in the matter of a suit determined to undermine the Endangered Species Act's designation of the polar bear as "threatened." Guess what? Polar bears tread on areas where oil can be found; Palin seems determined to keep pesky species extirpations from diminishing oil company profits in any way.

*As you might be able to infer from the previous point, Palin is a strong advocate of opening up ANWR to drilling. When asked about environmentalists' arguments against the move, and the idea that the small amount of oil available up there would barely make a dent in gas prices (and would be gone quite soon), Palin first pointed out that since ANWR doesn't have mountains and rivers, it's not worth saving; then snapped, "I beg to disagree with any candidate who would say we can't drill our way out of our problem or that more supply won't ultimately affect prices. Of course it will affect prices."

    • Teenage pregnancy, illegitimate children, bitter divorces and illegal vengeance using abuses of power? Sounds just like a Republican!

      If Governor Palin is so inattentive to her own house, then she is without a doubt unqualified to be in the White House.

      So Obama picks Joe Biden for VP, the excellent needed addition as Biden is the foremost
      expert on foreign affairs.

      McCain picks Palin for VP, an expert to remove Polar Bears from the endangered species list!

      We now know the defintion of "Maverick"!

      * Senator Obama's fight for universal children's health care in Illinois.
      * His success bringing Republicans and Democrats together (a huge selling point!) on bills such as the one in Illinois requiring police interrogations and confessions to be videotaped.
      * His leadership on ethics reform in Washington (the bill that lobbyists and special interests are complaining about right now has his name on it).
      * Various bills concerning the response to Hurricane Katrina, including an amendment putting strict limits on the use of no-bid contracts after disasters, requiring planning for the evacuation of people with special needs and senior citizens, creating a National Emergency Family Locator System, etc.

      Always remember, a politician is a politician and no matter, it's up to you personally to make a difference in the world; not rely on Obama or McCain to do it for us. The right thing to do is to pick the BEST person for the job. And that's why Obama's my pick. Now excuse me while I spend Labor Day keeping kids busy by taking them to the park rather than them spending the day watching television or doing nothing good on the streets.       I am still amazed that you don't have the intelligence or the backbone to discuss any issues. And, that you can't provide a list of any Obama accomplishments. Shallow candidates have shallow followers; and, you are the proof! !

      Well don't you love to start fights you can't finish don't Retired village people? I am 21 years old, learned to hunt, fish and survive in a rural community.It's funny though I could never kill another animal without being hungry at the time or at least picturing how healthy organic lean meats are. I worked on dairy farms, drove tractors, did target practice, and met a lot of current and ex Michigan militia members, they are on my side whatever party I ally myself to war or not, just or unjust, I found myself in a city going to college and living with different colored people and finally felt at home, with everyone. Why isn't an institution that I couldn't join and chase my dream of being a fighter pilot? Because I was born with a tumor in my ear, and am deaf in it, and stricken with vertigo. But I bet when the apocalypse we brought upon ourselves by being greedy and stupid with our technology comes, I bet I will out survive you, cholestiatoma or not. Look it up.

      1. marrying your highschool sweet heart
      2. having 5 kids
      3. having a special needs kid
      4. being a pageant winner
      5. being an almost grandma
      6. lying about her support of "bridge to no where"
      7. abuse of power and influence
      8. and pulling a real fast one during the vetting process

      Dont worry if you fully don't understand what a VP actually does, cause were still confused ourselves?

      Educated- a big plus too! A JC is fine or a small town university is swell...

      ...Must be pretty, maybe a beauty pageant winner are a plus!
      Must be able to argue for issues such as abortion, arbitrary wars and stem-cell research a big big plus!

    • Are the "experts" who say that the polar bears are in danger the some ones who warned us about the safety of the penguins at the North Pole? Oops. Penguins do not live in the North Pole so how can they be endangered? Yet, that is what special network documentaries have told us? Who can you believe? There are @ 31,000 scientists who have signed a petition stating that global warming as man made does not have any science to back it up. That is enough to make me stop and reevaluate the issue.

      I've never heard of these north pole endangered penguins. Ever. Where on earth did you get that?
      Also, many of those scientists are payed for their opinions. Exxon was giving scientists money to "revaluate man-made global warming". They spent millions of dollars putting doubt into the science of global warming. That is EXACTLY what cigarette companies did when their product was accused of causing cancer. 31000 does not outweigh the other 90% of the scientific community.

    • When she does debate all of her opinions will probably comeback to her being a mother and a god fearing woman. She has brought more money to Alaska, but only by ignoring the environmental ramifications of her actions. I can't wait to her what she thinks she has to offer America by being our Vice-President and possibly President.
