Xenoglossy: evidence of past lives?

According to some historians, the first documented case of xenoglossy is seen with the 12 apostles during the Pentecost. But for those who do not consider the Bible a reliable historical source, there is a wealth of examples in other contexts of the ancient and medieval world, as well as our modern era.
Unknown or Forgotten Languages?
Upon being hypnotized, a woman from Pennsylvania was somehow able to communicate in Swedish. Yet her sudden grasp of the language did not come from study. When under a deep state of trance, she spoke using the lower register of her voice, claiming to be Jensen Jacoby, an inhabitant of Sweden, born in the 17th century.
This case was studied in depth by the late Dr. Ian Stevenson former head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia and author of “Unlearned language: new studies in Xenoglossy.” According to Dr. Stevenson, with no prior training or exposure to the language, this woman could only have known Swedish if she remembered it from a previous existence. Dr. Stevenson’s theory is supported by the subject’s ability to name daily artifacts of the place and time in which Jacoby was said to have lived.
This is not by far the only case of xenoglossy attributed to previous incarnations. In 1953, Professor P. Pal from the University of Itachuna in East Bengal discovered Swarnlata Mishra, a 4-year-old Hindu girl who was somehow capable of dancing and singing in Bengali, without having had any previous contact with that culture. The young girl stated that she had once been a Bengali woman who was taught how to dance by a close friend.
The Origin of Xenoglossy
While some attribute cases of xenoglossy to cryptonesia (as in the case of the young Hindu girl possibility having some forgotten contact with nearby Bengalese culture), there are a number of cases for which such an explanation is inadequate.
One of the most surprising events of these cases took place in 1977. Ohio state penitentiary convict Billy Mulligan was found to have two additional personalities: one identified as Abdul, who spoke perfect Arabic; and the other, called Rugen, who communicated in perfect Serbo-Croatian. According to prison doctors, Mulligan had never left the United States, where he was born and grew up to adulthood.
Likewise, biologist Lyall Watson describes the case of 10-year-old Indio Igarot, a Filipino boy who, when in trance, communicated in the Zulu tongue, which he had never heard.
A more recent case was triggered by a car accident. Prior to an event in 2007, Czech speedway racer Matěj Kus could barely fumble along in broken English. Yet after being knocked unconscious in the accident, paramedics and others at the crash site were amazed that Kus could suddenly speak clear and perfect English with a British accent. However, the ability didn’t last long. Kus retained no memory of his temporary English fluency and is now enduring learning English through conventional study.
Some scientists have proposed that such cases might stem from a genetic legacy, while others have suggested that these individuals could be telepathically connecting to this language through foreign speakers. However, these theories do not benefit from the extensive research, evidence, and study given to Dr. Stevenson’s theory.
In support of this idea, Australian psychologist Peter Ramster, author of “The Search for Lives Past,” found that he could maintain fluid conversations in ancient French with his ***********CONTINUES

Great read!
My mother said as a child she would find me sitting up at night talking in an unknown language to someone who was not there. I don't remember any of it but always wondered what I was saying.

Super post. I watched some documentary on this years ago and found it fascinating. Some part of christianity has what they call Speaking in Tongues like the apostles did at the last supper. I've actually witnessed this and it certainly sounds like a language and that there is some connection to a lost one at that. As far as a scientific explanation, my thoughts are that our energy that creates our consciousness survives the body, it be thru dna or/and the electrical inpulses that make it up, thus reincarnation in religion. Energy never gets destroyed: our brain and consciousness and muscles are electrical impulses..where does it go when we shed this skin? thanks again for the brain exercise and super post!

Indeed, fascinating stuff. It's a bit harder to refute things of this nature when stories like this little boy or the little scottish boy come up. Might have to do some research into this.
Thanks for posting.

Every word or sound ever made in the universe still exists....some have the ability to receive them...just like a radio antenna receives ...some have their tuner knob turned a little too far one way or the other....picking up nothing or static.....everyone of you that reads this have had over two million people involved in your makeup in only 20 generations...many languages....cultures.....they are all part of you and they are all immortal through you.....everything is possible...if you listen...you can hear everyone that has ever cried....also everyone that ever laughed....it is a sad statement of mankind that the crying from all time drowns out the laughter...it was never meant to be this way.......Golden Ruler...Will.

When I was younger, I used to have vivid memories of being a teenager in china. I worked on a farm, and lived with my grandmother. I think I wanted to play baseball, or something, as well.
I don't remember any of it now, or what it was exactly that I used to say.
Although, I also remember learning to speak english in this life, so... so yeah.

Reincarnation in Islam
Excerpt:
“The Hindu belief in reincarnation is well known. But it is not known that the Koran refers as kafir (deviant) anyone who doesn't believe in the possibility of rebirth. Not many in India have perhaps come across the verses of the great mystic, Hazrat Jalal-ud-Deen Rumi, describing the process of evolution through reincarnation - from mineral and plant to animal and man and then to angelhood and beyond. Take the verses from the world famous Masnawi by Hazrat:
I died as mineral and became a plant,
I died as plant and rose to animal,
I died as animal and I was man.
Why should I fear?
When was I less by dying?
Yet once more I shall die as man,
To soar with angels blest;
But even from angelhood I must pass on ...Another great mystic, Mansur al-Hallaj, famous for his formulation, Anal Haq (I am the truth: Aham Brahmo Asmi) wrote:
Like the herbage
I have sprung up many a time
On the banks of flowing rivers.
For a hundred thousand years
I have lived and worked
In every sort of body. The Koran itself seems quite clear: "And you were dead, and He brought you back to life. And He shall cause you to die, and shall bring you back to life, and in the end shall gather you unto Himself." (2:28). The words "you were dead" can only mean that they had lived before becoming dead. And the words "in the end shall gather you unto Himself" could very well mean the attainment of moksha (release) rather than an eternal life in heaven or hell. Those who disagree, however, contend that "dead" is very commonly used for non-living things. "It does not necessarily mean that you were alive before being a non-living thing or dead." (S Abdullah Tariq in Islamic Voice, February 2002)

Christian Reincarnation: The Long Forgotten Doctrine
Excerpt:
During the period from A.D. 250 to 553 controversy raged, at least intermittently, around the name of Origen, and from this controversy emerged the major objections that orthodox Christianity raises against reincarnation. Origen of Alexandria, one of Christianity's greatest systematic theologians, was a believer in reincarnation.
Origen was a person devoted to scriptural authority, a scourge to the enemies of the church, and a martyr for the faith. He was the spiritual teacher of a large and grateful posterity and yet his teachings were declared heresy in 553. The debates and controversies that flared up around his teachings are in fact the record of reincarnation in the church.
[snip]
From about 395 to 403 Origen became the subject of heated debate throughout Christendom. These three ecclesiats applied much energy and thought in search of questionable doctrine in Origen. Again the controversy flared up around 535, and in the wake of this the Emperor Justinian composed a tract against Origen in 543, proposing nine anathemas against "On First Principles", Origen's chief theological work. Origen was finally officially condemned in the Second Council of Constantinople in 553, when fifteen anathemas were charged against him.
The critics of Origen attacked him on individual points, and thus did not create a systematic theology to oppose him. Nonetheless, one can glean from their writings five major points that Christianity has raised against reincarnation:
(1) It seems to minimize Christian salvation.
(2) It is in conflict with the resurrection of the body.
(3) It creates an unnatural separation between body and soul.
(4) It is built on a much too speculative use of Christian scriptures.
(5) There is no recollection of previous lives.Any discussion of these points will be greatly clarified by a preliminary look at Origen's system. Although it is of course impossible to do justice in a few pages to a thinker as subtle and profound as Origen, some of the distinctive aspects of his thought can be summarized.

Reincarnation in Judaism
Excerpt:
The fact that reincarnation is part of Jewish tradition comes as a surprise to many people. 11 Nevertheless, it's mentioned in numerous places throughout the classical texts of Jewish mysticism, starting with the preeminent sourcebook of Kabbalah, the Zohar :12
As long as a person is unsuccessful in his purpose in this world, the Holy One, blessed be He, uproots him and replants him over and over again. (Zohar I 186b)
All souls are subject to reincarnation; and people do not know the ways of the Holy One, blessed be He! They do not know that they are brought before the tribunal both before they enter into this world and after they leave it; they are ignorant of the many reincarnations and secret works which they have to undergo, and of the number of naked souls, and how many naked spirits roam about in the other world without being able to enter within the veil of the King's Palace. Men do not know how the souls revolve like a stone that is thrown from a sling. But the time is at hand when these mysteries will be disclosed. (Zohar II 99b)

This is not only proof of past lives, but it is more proof that we are all connected. How people justify hatred of eachother after seeing proof like this is beyond my comprehension.

I was born with the memory of several violent deaths - the clearest one was also linked to an airplane but long before WWII. None of these memories have faded away, they have remained crystal clear and very sharp. I haven't, however, done anything to find out more about them - some of them seem to have occurred a very, very long time ago - I have not been curious to find out who I was. These memories are enough for me. What is interesting is that even though these were violent deaths, there is neither fear nor pain associated with them.

Could these hypnotic states be unintentionally tapping into DNA which might carry a, seemingly, unlimited historical knowledge base stretching back to it's own creation?

BRILLIANT question. I took a bio class a while back and there are proven DNA deadzones (for lack of a better term) that somehow are at times tapped into...
Scientists theorize that these zones are actually an ongoing record (like tree rings maybe?) of our ancient history until the present.
The point is, you're probably spot on.
