Why Isn't Hemp Legal in the U.S.

Now we all know that it's not Hemp that contains THC, but rather its sister plant Canibus. We also know that Canada is growing hemp without any problems at all. Some of us also realize that hemp would help slendidly in our efforts to heal the economy and the environment. Hemp produces more oxegen in a year than some trees do and you can make virtually anything out of it including biofuels, biodegradable plastic bags, and basically everything else that we currently use oil to make, plus much more. So the big question is "Why is it still illegal?"
The answer, it seems to me, is that the oil companies dictate the decissions of the government, either that or we just have some really ignorant people running our country. Holly shit I think it's both.
Please drop a line.

Lets be specific, Dupont is the big push in prohibition.
They and the loggers are the financial beneficiaries to hemp prohibition. Place the blame correctly. - 2 years ago

Hemp isn't illegal. Hemp comes from cannabis. Cannabis is illegal. As Terence McKenna suggest:
The process begins by declaring legitimate what we have denied for so long. Let us declare nature to be legitimate. All plants should be declared legal, and all animals for that matter. The notion of illegal plants and animals is obnoxious and ridiculous.

ITS incredible how much we buy from other countries and ban people from making a living and keeping funds in the U.S. All we can do is educate people. The problem is folks don't want to be educated or to lazy to do anything about it. I went to the dollar general store memorial day and found a bunch of american looking made things like an american flag painted bird house and etc to flip it over and labeled made in China. Are you telling me this couldn't be made here and sold here. Just like hemp we are throwing jobs and revenue away. All i can say is do your part send petitions to your senators and coongressmen. Its easy on norml website. I urge you to check it out and get involved.I own 40 acres in Kentuky . Where hemp use to thrive. i'd love to try my hand in it and also provide people with a JOB

The first two sentences say it all. Eliminating the competition to further the growth of the oil industry. I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist but this sounds similar to GM’s controversial recall and eventual elimination of the Saturn EV1 (amongst others).
The weight of how, over all beneficial hemp would prove over petroleum-based materials for the environment alone seems a no brainer to me. So many reasons to break away from the reliance of fossil fuels but the resistance to do so continues to keep the United States firmly planted in the past while discrediting the validity of such a nation that had been so resourceful and innovative before.
Our nation is falling further and further behind with each passing day but making a quick buck rather than investing it seems to be the priority over saving the country. A blatantly careless and reckless perversion of capitalism. - 3 years ago

Hemp is way more useful than the average person realizes. And it's sad when you mention hemp, most people look at you like you're a pothead. Ignorance makes me sick.

jbone1983:
The saddest part is that people don't realize the benefits of the cannabis flower, as well. The cannabis seed is the only known plant that contains all nine essential amino acids to form a complete protein. Of course the seed has many other nutritional benefits. Just as the Rastafarians believe, I think of it as a literal 'tree of life.' If you google cannabis and tree of life there over 200,000 hits. I'm not a christian or any other kind of monotheist, but the cannabis plant is of divine origin. it will be the bridge that returns us to our humanity and to nature. It will save the planet. And no b.s.; unless we change our terms of approaching civilization, the planet we call home is doomed. Maybe not in my generation or the next, but with some level of certitude that future is inevitable should we continue this projected path. But anyway, my point is, who gives a fuck if somebody thinks you're a pothead. Just understand there's an apparent gap of information, and be willing to elucidate anyone willing to tolerate. We all have one ignorance or another. It seems part of the human condition. And while you're explaining the differences between cannabis and hemp....hopefully you know what they are because I think there might exist several interpretations. For instance I would tell you that hemp is not a plant, but rather the fiber of the cannabis plant. Second, I would explain cannabis utilized in industrial hemp has been bred for either fiber capacity or seed production. Both of which practically nullify the generation of THC, as fructification is not the goal. Third I would explain the THC bearing fruits or flowers of the cannabis plant also provide beneficial factors that deserve consideration. A major problem in the argument for industrial hemp is that many people try to differentiate from cannabis. Which to me becomes even more problematic as the details have been skewed. Hemp is simply the industrial term used for the fiber of the cannabis plant. Cannabis has several subspecies and can be bred to achieve different outcomes. The farmer of cannabis for hemp will not likely mix his crop with the farmer who grows cannabis for flowers, and vice versa. So, we've even established cannabis as being so malignant that we have to refer to the plant as the manufactured product in order for it to be legitimized.

If I were to hear a presidental candidate wished to lift the ban on hemp he / she would have my vote. Hemp is a lot more important than some may realize.

And we saw the newly 'elected' official's response to the notion of cannabis being a source of economic prosperity. I mean jeeze, can some one tell that guy to get a fucking clue. The question only appeared a couple dozen times. Obviously the citizens of this country are smarter than the officials.
