Shipwrecks in Paradise

In a huge remote bay, in one of the poorest countries in the world lie a vast collection of over 300 rotting hulks. Mauritania used to be known as a country where a ship could be disposed of and so they were quietly dumped. As a possible environmental hazard the EU has plans to clear the area but by now the ships have become part of local life, providing an ecology for fishing and a thriving scrap metal market

    • Very interesting video and good to see you followed up your trip with some in depth research that brought more attention to the issue.

      Found a short article on the graveyard (w/ pics) after watching your video. Talks more about the EU agreement, the locals, and mentions the make-shift kind of boat you caught on camera as the scrap metal workers were floating in to shore. They call the boats 'floating coffins' and they're just a collection of floating junk wrapped in a net.

      (there are several Google Earth (GE) groups that "collect" fascinating images from around the globe and one just happens to be shipwrecks... and this has got to be the mother load...)
