12-year-old McDonald's hamburger, still looking good

Wellness educator and nutrition consultant Karen Hanrahan has kept a McDonald's hamburger since 1996 to illustrate its nonexistent ability to decay. Aside from drying out and bit and having "the oddest smell," it apparently hasn't changed much in the past 12 years.
This isn't the first time someone kept an uneaten McDonald's hamburger for an extended period of time for the sake of science. Or in the case of the Bionic Burger Museum, multiple burgers for over 19 years. There are even instructions on how to start your own collection of old, self-preserving burgers.
Anyone else have experience with fast food that just won't rot?

The reason it didn't rot was because there is no moisture. Dry food doesn't rot. McDonald's patties are 100% beef, no preservatives. Make a 10/1 burger in the same shape as a mcdonalds burger and leave it out. I guarantee it will wont
rot. http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2010/11/the-burger-lab-revisiting-the-myth-o... - 8 months ago

I hadn't had McDonald's for ages before the beginning of this past summer. I picked up a double cheeseburger one day when I needed a quick/cheap lunch, and ended up crunching down on a bone fragment.
I should have just followed my first instinct and upchucked on the side of the highway right then and there, because I felt like sh*t for the rest of the day.
I ended up sleeping it off.Good hamburger = f*cking awesome.
McDonald's = flesh garbage.

Makes me wonder how McDonald's hamburgers could even be digested by the human body. Pressure treated wood decking doesn't even last that long!!!

This isnt the only fast food item with this strange preserving quality. As demonstrated in Super Size Me, the french fries as well stay virtually the same over an extended period of time. Eating Mcdonalds is practicaly the same as eating plastic, it does the same thing in your stomach.

A friend of mine's aunt had a similarly creepy experience with some processed cheese someone gave to her...
She didn't want to eat it, so she put it in her refrigerator in a bag with some other cheese that was molding... and just from setting next to it long enough, the other cheese's mold went away.
Needless to say, it made me rethink my cheese habit.

I agree with karrer.
This burger should be studied because McDonald's may need to venture into the pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, if their meet lasts this long, we may have the cure to hunger in 3rd world countries. Sure the meat may be rotting, but surely some food is better than none. [sarcasm]

I think a new marketing angle has just been uncovered ... vintage burgers.
But not a surprise surely - given dry storage and with the amount of salt contained in each burger, it should last for decades.

And the conservatives say...
"No regulation! The evil liberals want to decide what goes in your food with the evil FDA!"
I didn't need another reason not to eat at McDonalds, but fuck man. That shouldn't be legal. Shit that doesn't break down in your body should not be sold as food.

I can't even imagine eating stuff like that anymore. Heck, I wouldn't eat McDonalds even before I went Vegan because nearly every time I did I got food poisoning.

I have to agree with bwittany on this. This is not a representative sample of all meats, as a matter of fact it's the exception. Saying your vegan because of stuff like this seems a little silly to me. If you don't like fast food don't eat it, there are far better examples of meaty goodness in the world.

Y'know, thing is... McDonalds isn't really that dissimilar from most other store bought premade foods. Look at the labels on your food, see how many preservatives and chemicals are in them. You mean to tell me that's normal?
While I am not the most perfect Vegan, I try and stay away from premade foods and cook my own using fresh veggies, fruit, etc... because most premade foods are so infused with strange chemicals I really wouldn't want to eat them anyway.
But of course I still eat some premade foods and have to wonder if it's even remotely healthy to do so...
All I was trying to say is McDonalds is disgusting and unhealthy and this article is basically proof of that. If you don't feel the same way that's fine and I respect your opinion.
I agree that McDonalds does not necessarily equal all meat. There are good burgers out there, I just don't eat them anymore. More for you I guess...

This is not interesting, it's disturbing. Food that won't rot is not really food. Especially a burger since the "meat" is basically part of a dead animal (not that I'm a vegetarian but I expect decomposition from all things that have died)
