Shark blood cancer cure?

Sharks have immune systems similar to humans, but their antibodies - the molecules which actually fight disease - are exceptionally resilient.
Researchers believe this quality could be harnessed to help slow the spread of diseases such as cancer.
Potentially, it could lead to a new generation of drug treatments.
The Australian team found that shark antibodies can withstand high temperatures as well as extremely acidic or alkaline conditions.
Gut
This means they would potentially be able to survive in the harsh environment of the human gut, which is crucial to the development of a cancer-fighting pill.
Associate Prof Mick Foley from Melbourne's La Trobe University said the shark molecules can also attach themselves to cancer cells and stop them spreading.
"The cells actually grow less than where we don't add a shark antibody or we add a completely irrelevant shark antibody," he said.
"So this indicates the shark antibody that we have is binding to those cancer cells and for some reason causing them to grow more slowly and perhaps even killing them."
Sharks were chosen for the project because they have robust immune systems and rarely succumb to infections.
There is already evidence that their antibodies can slow the spread of breast cancer.
But it is also hoped that they could eventually be used to treat other conditions, such as malaria and rheumatoid arthritis.

Speaking as a biologist and cancer researcher the statement shark blood can cure cancer is a lie. The article did not say anything about curing cancer. What it did say is that the antibodies from sharks can potentially slow down the growth of cancer cells. This is great but it is not a cure. Additionally, they are speculating that the antibodies that bind to cancer cells might be able to stimulate a human's immune system to kill the cancer cell. Once again this is only speculation and has not been tested. If shark antibodies were a cure for cancer, eating shark fin soup or any other cuisine containing shark meat would not do the job. Cancer is a problem that is too complicated to be cured by one thing. Let alone by shark antibodies. Do the world a favor. When you read something like this article don't make it more than what it says. Think and recognize that slow the growth of cancer cells does not equal cure person of cancer. It means exactly what it says. It slows down the growth and spread of cancer. And in this case it has not been tested in human so no one knows how they will work in a living human body.

A pill, huh? Considering we're not the same species, do we have to keep taking pills to restock on the antibodies? Or is it POSSIBLE for us to reproduce that type of antibody "naturally"? (I'm guessing we probably can... but I'd need some verification, since I'm not sure.)
And there goes humans thinking of themselves before other animals and nature... And also how short-sighted they are too. One- longer living people-> more people alive at a given time-> overpopulation-> more space/food/supplies needed-> more cultivation-> land clearing=killing nature/natural animal habitats. The other was killing the sharks to get the antibodies. It's not like you have to kill the shark to get some of "its"/his/her blood... Not only that, but you can probably recreate the enzyme or something like that once you get it out.
Oh, and solution for overpopulation? Let's start expanding and move onto Mars! Not only can you solve overpopulation, you can reduce disease because you have so much space and can quarintine anyone to make sure they're "perfectly healty"! (and yes, I'm being sarcastic, though the idea is perfectly possible, though it would cost a lot of money and time, which doesn't seem too inviting either. Not only that, but what'd probably happen is some discommunication between people on Earth and Mars and a separation, so... not too inviting.

There's been mention of Deep Blue Sea in relation to this article. What I find to be an even more fascinating connection is the fact that the same guy who produced that stinker was also behind I Am Legend, Akiva Goldsman. For those who haven't seen both movies, the essential premise of each is that a radical cancer cure goes completely awry. Maybe Mr. Goldsman is trying to tell us something? ;)

poor sharks, first fin soup, now cancer cures...just let people die its natural! Cancer sucks, but so does over population. We keep our fatally sick alive as long as possible, our old way past their use, and still diseases exist. If we cure cancer, another will replace it. This is the way life works.

True, people don't know the value of death (and I'm really sounding e.m.o, but ah well. And I'm kinda taking this from a manga. I think it was ALIVE. I don't know its full title.) And it's true, even if we cure one disease, another will surely take its place. Also, for overpopulation, disease is more easily spread. So, in other words, get rid of overpopulation, decrease the speed of deadly, contagious diseases spreading. (And now I'm sounding sadistic...) As for keeping people alive longer? I don't know how others feel about it, but it sounds dreadful for those who have to bear with it... I've never been in their place, so I wouldn't really know.

Ugh, you people. Seriously.
They wouldn't have to go out and "kill all the sharks".... they would recreate the enzymes in the blood that have this potential. Like Vaccines? It's no wonder the world laughs at Americans.

Haha, true. They don't HAVE to kill the sharks to get what they need to reproduce the enzymes. And yeah, no wonder ("most") of the world laughs at Americans... I "laugh" at them (and am annoyed by them), even though I live there (the second part self explainitory. And that's why I don't really consider myself with them, because I can't really relate with/to them very well...)

The fact is that the claim doesn't even need to have any substance. People will still demand it. Just like with Shark cartilage.

Please tell me something has changed and I am just the last one to know it. That would so make my day.
Unless laws did change, Japanese or other shark fishing boats will go, catch sharks, remove the fins, and toss the sharks back into the water, causing more sharks to come, and massive slaughters of every kind of shark to happen. They kill sharks until their holds are full of nothing but fins in most every case. That's what brings in the bucks the fins. Anyone realize the amount of sharks it takes to do that? It's massive. And I think totally irresponsible.
So guys, there is Plenty of shark blood if we make them preserve it. Then maybe the lives of the sharks won't be so in vain. And it would take up more room on their ships if they had to bring back blood and fins, or sharks whole... even better.
That whole deal has always made me upset. Like shark fin soup is that great anyhow.

There is no doubt in my mind that the medicinal uses of hemp exist. There is evidence that olive oil does amazing things to the body, evident by the Mediterranean diet for example. Same with flax oil. However, we know that drug companies don't really care and while that is a huge problem, hopefully people'll realize the benefits of other treatments themselves.
A problem still exists, though. There is a huge population that does not want to try alternative medicines (for personal reasons and/or because they're brainwashed into believing that they're nothing more than snake oils). We can't discount every available solution.

No one said anything about killing sharks. We can learn about their immunological responses with a few vials of blood, much like immunological research with humans. That's what makes this even more fascinating.

No one's up in arms about their local grocer serving up la sharke in the meat section of their deli. Seeing as we're cloning I'm sure there's something we can learn about the makeup of the antibody and reproduce it. I just saw a trailer with Christian Bale going at it with a 50 foot robot armed w/ a space age anti aircraft gun. I'm sure we can make it happen, people!

A pity... Though I think they'll probably find a way to extract the antibodies (safely, without harming the shark very much, I hope...) and then reproduce them. The other way I can think of would be to take the sharks that others had hunted and killed and extracting from those before they're taken off to the fish markets, though lots of consumers (probably) wouldn't like that.

actually, only a few species of shark are thought to be on the verge of extinction. not all sharks. And even this statement can not be substantiated with sufficient data. The oceans are too large and too deep to get anywhere close to a true idea of the population sizes of most known aquatic organism.

Antibodies are proteins that attach to specific portions of other proteins (antigens). They act with multiple functions. The prevent virus from entering your cells, they attach to bacteria and mark them for destruction, and they attach to infected and cancers cells and mark them for destruction. This is true for human, shark, horse , rabbit, goat, chick, etc. antibodies. What do you think anti-venom is? It is antibodies from an animal that has been exposed to the venom in question. Usually, a horse. So, if you get bitten by a rattlesnake and you are given anti-venom does that mean you are grow a mane and a bushy tail and start whinnying like a horse. No. So, in answer to you ignorant statement if you are given shark antibodies for any amount of time you will not grow gills and become aquaman.

It would not be necessary to kill off all the sharks to make antibodies for humans. There are currently thousands of cell lines that are used every day to generate all kinds of biochemicals (Including antibodies). The cell lines are from number organisms and also include human cell lines. While it is usually necessary for animals to be sacrificed to gain these cells it is not always the case. And in this case it may not even be necessary. So, this irrational statement is not necessary. What we as people should be more concerned about is whether or not we should actually be trying to cure these diseases. Disease is a natural way of controlling population and for natural selection. In situations in which natural selection and evolution are stunted you usually find that extinction follows. By assisting people to survive with genetic diseases that would kill them off, you are allowing the disease to propogate throughout the population instead of eventually falling into non-existance. This is a bio-ethical question that needs to be addressed. Are we doing the right thing or are we working towards our own extinction?
