To celebrate Warsaw is offering free travel on the new 23-stop line Saturday afternoon.
The underground line runs about 12 miles between the city's north and south.
Construction began in 1983 under the communist government but was slow due in part to a lack of equipment. Seven years later communism fell but money was short as the country changed to a market economy.
City authorities plan to build a second, east-west line, but there is no timetable for how long that might take.

this story is not accurate. the metro in warsaw is opeating for more than a decade now. the last station was completed abour a year ago. if you really want, you can compare it to boston's BIG DIG but...not as bad. the idea of the metro started right after the WWII when warsaw was destroyed in 80% and the rebuilding process began. some stations were created then but later covered up and forgotten for many decades although once in a while the idea of metro would pop up. decades later, communism fell, warsaw already had a working downtown and city was completely reconstructed, it already had some 2 million inhabitants. the construction of subway system (for large european capitol) would create colosal problems, imagine building of a new metro system in NYC or even boston at the present (!!!) time. so what poles did , they had to coordinate it with excisting constructions, took it step by step to AVOID chaos and...without evacuationig residents . everyone is happy now, the city gets more money from EU to finish the project but the existing metro is wonderful addition to a very good public transportation. the plan of HOW to continue WITHOUT creating a sink hole like in boston... is in works. go visit! its highly recommended by all my son's iternational friends who lived in warsaw while atending universities there.
