One of Bush's parting shots besides the bailout? This is abominable. What are the people at the EPA thinking?!

Nuclear Power Is Not the Answer. Keynote speech by Dr. Helen Caldicott. Health effects are discussed.
There need to be more caring people in the world and they need to take charge.

Thank you JanforGore. The nuclear power plants are all old, many being built in the early 1970's. Maine Yankee was only 24 years old when it was finally closed because it was falling apart. The nuclear radiation bombardment in the reactor combined with the salt water used to cool it disintegrated it beyond repair. All the salt water reactors are in the same boat. Maine Yankee was covered up and by FATE, the condition of the reactor was exposed in a rate case before the Public Utility Commission . I really don't think the Commissioners cared but there was one good lawyer who did. That's all you need. One good lawyer in the right place at the right time and all these plants will be shut down. Their condition must be exposed. As they break down, more curies of radiation are released into the cooling water and then dumped into our lakes, oceans or whatever body of water they happen to sit on. (They also release more radioactive gases into our air). Bush is raising the level to allow these plants to continue to operate, wanting a third licensing period. Also, pushing for re-processing. The satanic nuclear industry cannot continue unless they are allowed to dump. Let's ship it all to Bush's new ranch in Paraguay.

I would say yes, and then also have to conclude that anyone in Congress who allows him to get away with it is an environmental terrorist as well. Just as those in Congress who said impeachment was "off that table" and said it wasn't worth it have much blood on their hands. Democrats in Congress and in the party establishment must be so proud of themselves that they have used eight years of these crimes (instead of seeking justice for them) to push people towards them because they cannot connect the dots and feel they have no other choice... how proud they must feel to only 'win' elections by default instead of actually doing something concrete for the people to earn those votes. What a travesty.

I'm saying straight up terrorist, not environmental terrorist. By intentionally allowing municipal water supplies used for human consumption to be radioactive is the equivalent to a dirt bomb. Maybe they think the levels won't be harmful but I honestly don't trust them to make those decisions because Bush hasn't proven to me in his whole political or business career that he is competent enough to make such decisions. He can't even pronounce nuclear correctly, he probably thinks radioactive means your FM stereo in on.

And do you see it being stopped if Obama is 'elected?' I'm only asking because so many people seem to think he is 'the one' who will wave his hand and all of this will go away. I think people need to be more realistic here and realize that regardless of who "wins" this "election" that the damage caused by all of the enabling by Democrats in Congress as well as Republicans along with the apathy on the part of a huge majority of the American people will take many years to reverse if it is even reversed. Meanwhile, is there anything on a local level happening to stop this?

JanforGore:
I don’t see Obama as any kind of savior. I figure he will be as corrupt as any Republican or Democrat. And yes, apathy has much to do with it.
Part of that problem stems from southern Nevada growing so fast that many newcomers don’t even know about the repository and if they did, it seems too far away for them to care. Those that have lived here for many years have protested the repository because this is their home.
As for anything being done about the radioactive byproducts beginning to appear in well samples…no. I have read about new ways to treat potable water that may be able to remove some particles, however, most people are on wells.
(And anyhow, it only affects a few thousand. It’s not like it was Las Vegas)

I don't think Obama will be the magic bullet to save the environment. Even politicians with the best of intentions still have to play the political game of give and take. But Bush and the conservative mind set seem to not understand cause and effect and believe there will be no consequences for the raping and pillaging of the planet. The power is in the hands of the consumers to truly save the world, but no one really seems to care enough to make the slightest compromise.

I live close to where they want/are building a nuclear waste repository in Nevada. The people that live in the outlying areas are pissed. The repository is not finished, but we all know it will go into operation one of these days.
When it does open, it is estimated that it will be filled to capacity within a year, because of all the radioactive waste lying around in other states, waiting for a place to be stored.
Monitoring wells have been sunk all around the Nevada Test Site. The tests are beginning to show radioactive byproducts making their way toward what is believed to be an underground river that supplies drinking and irrigation water that serve several thousand people. I guess they figure that since the water is already contaminated, that a little more won't hurt.
Yep, Baby Bush is giving us all the finger. He’s like a small child that all the other children don’t like, so he makes life as miserable as possible for them. - 3 years ago

The world's governments should put the Bush administration on trial for the last eight years of my life and the possible 100+ we will need to recover from such a destructive and self-centered group of people. Weather it be environmentally, militarily, economically, politically, socially, diplomatically, et cetera, I can't find a story today that isn't somehow related to my own government making the wrong decisions for everyone else. Change for America is the least of our needs. This entire ball of rock we call home needs to realize that we all effect each other. What's money good for if we destroy ourselves in the process?
The worst part, to me, is that I feel like most people who will read this comment, and the other's on this great community website, already know what I'm talking about. It's the other millions and millions we need to reach out to.

These actions clearly illustrate Bush's sociopathic tendencies. He is using policy to get revenge on the American people for not liking him. His Caligula Complex is showing. Once he is gone we must do all we can as citizens to DEMAND this be reversed regardless of who is in the White House. The EPA, FDA, USDA, FEMA, and all other federal agencies must get a cleaning from top to bottom. NO other 'president' must be allowed to get away with what he has been allowed to get away with for the last eight years.

Full story at link above: Related to our water supplies:
" I am a civilian biologist working for the Army Corps of Engineers. On my personal time, I joined a trip down the Los Angeles River to protest actions by my own agency to undermine the Clean Water Act." "Last year, in response to the court ruling, the corps and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency put together a document spelling out new, more restrictive methods for analyzing which waters will continue to be subject to the law. With a big assist from the Bush administration, developers and industry successfully lobbied the agencies to use the new guidebook as an opportunity to push the majority of our nation's streams and wetlands out of reach of the Clean Water Act."

I think there is a wider picture to this. Not one I like to share, but there is an industry that makes money. The nuclear industry is set to overtake every other means of generating power on this planet. Question is why? It’s expensive, it’s unstable and in the long term it violates every natural law within our habitat. So why use it??????? Money! I have looked at every polarisable reason. And every time I arrive at the same inexplicable relationship between the technology and the environment. They think it economically viable because it generates an abundance of possibilities.
There are currently approximately 437 nuclear power reactors in operation in over 25 countries around the world, with a total output of some 350,000 megawatts. An additional 36 reactors (27,000 MWe) are currently under construction. “Get my point” - 3 years ago

Yes, they are setting it up for nuclear to make a come back. Well, they will have a fight on their hands. And McCain should he be 'elected' will see what Americans think of his BS 45 nuke plant initiative... and Obama who loosened restrictions on power plants reporting leaks into Illinois waterways to allow them to "police themselves" because Exelon was donating to him will also see that he will not get a free ride if he tries putting $$$ before the planet as well.
