Five nations under threat from climate change

Here are five islands whose inhabitants are going to need a new home soon:
1. The Guardian reports today that the new president of the Maldives will be putting part of the country's profits from tourism into a very special - and unusual - fund: one that will be used to buy a new, climate-change-friendly home. With its highest point reaching only 2.4 metres, the Maldives is one of the lowest-lying nations in the world and risks being submerged by rising sea-levels.
2. Tuvalu is another small pacific island state, and after the Maldives the second-lowest nation in the world. At its highest, it is 5 metres above sea-level and could be gone by the middle of this century. In 2002, the government was said to have hired two international law firms to look into suing polluting nations for effectively evicting its citizens.
3. Kiribati is a group of 32 atols and one island that peaks at 6.5 metres above sea-level. The World Bank has been involved in assessing the nation's vulnerability to climate change. I attended a talk by one of the project leaders some years ago in Paris. She quoted a few of the changes which the islanders were noticing. The one that has always stuck with me was "the first line of coconut trees has disappeared". Salt-intrusion was killing off the trees that were closest to the water.
4. The inhabitants of the Carteret Islands of Papua New Guinea may be among the first climate refugees - their home lies just 1.2 metres above the waves. The government of Papua New Guinea adopted a plan in 2005 to evacuate the locals to the neighbouring island of Bougainville. The relocation was initially scheduled for 2007, then delayed. According to this report, there was a trial earlier this year, which created some tension as relocated citizens were used as labourers in coconut plantations on Bougainville.
5. In 1995, 500,000 inhabitants on Bangladesh's Bhola Island were forced to move in when half their island was permanently flooded. Some claim they were the first climate refugees. Scientists predict that 20 million Bangladeshis could suffer the same fate by 2030.

How many more will it take for urgent action to begin? The longer we wait the more CO2 and other greenhouse gases continue to be spewed into the atmosphere. I recall sitting here last year asking the same question, and still no global treaty on climate change that addresses the true urgency of this, nor any significant bills by this Congress. And Obama still touts the 80% by 2050 line as if we actually have that kind of time. We don't.

The only thing that can be done at this time, is what we had to do after Ivan. MOVE. The water has been rising for a long time. Most of those islands should never have been inhabited because some are barrier islands and they always 'walk to shore'. We have a barrier island where I live and I am amazed at the expense and work and money spent so that people can "enjoy the view" BUT, before anyone screams at me..I am aware that these are indigenous (sp) people and they will need help relocating to safer ground. You cant out run the oceans. Jan is right, time is running out for Jamaica, Cuba and other islands that are continually pounded by hurricanes, wind, erosion. That is what the earth does and we have increased things but that is part of the tropics as well. IMHO.

We seriously cannnot count on the government to save us from climate change, the government is too slow and we, as the citizens of this nation and other nations needs to rise up against the government, or at least, take part in the production of going green, its the only way possible to stop the climate change taking its toll on every human..

This sciam article confirms that our human footprint has reached every continent. Excerpt:
"All told, if the eastern and western Antarctic ice shelves were to melt completely, they would raise sea levels by as much as 230 feet (70 meters); the collapse of smaller shelves like Larsen B has sped up the flow of glaciers behind them into the sea, contributing to the creeping up of high tide levels around the world. And that's likely to get worse before it gets better.
"There will be continued residual warming no matter what greenhouse gas reductions we make," Monaghan warns. "We really need to pay closer attention to what is going on with this ice sheet."

I'd like to be optimistic about climate change, but let's be honest- The people of these islands are screwed no matter what we start doing now to slow global warming. The rest of the world might be screwed, too... What I really want to see are the other countries near these islands welcome these refugees the right way and not turn them into slaves!

Delia added some important links as well.
hi icdoll! All the good looking women are on Current!
Back to the issue, Jan that polar cap submission would help explain these issues better too!
Look at the BIG picture at the polar caps and see where all the water is coming from!
Corsi, Limbaugh, Hannity, & Beck all claim its a hoax, a product of our imaginations, maybe when we are all under water they can snorkle to the top for some polluted air!

I have a feeling it's too late. The countries that aren't affected like these islands are, don't realize how detramental global warming really is. 1.2 meters above sea level? It'll be underwater soon...very very soon.

Copenhagen, December 2009 may well be our last chance to get it right on a global scale, especially if this country still has not passed any legislation to deal with this crisis appropriately. Citizens need to get involved in this process and push for that legislation this coming year. 100% renewable energy in 10 years. We cannot afford any more Tuivalus, and the people on these islands who do not contribute to the climate change affecting their homes should not have to suffer because of our selfishness.

Between The Tides: Eco Refugees Of The Ganges Delta
For those who need to see it with their own eyes to believe it and hear it from the mouths of those living it... because of our rapacious continual use of fossil fuels combined with deforestation, and a consumptive lifestyle that must be put into perspective in order to save us all.
