Liberty and Freedom that this Democratic Republic is founded upon states that some but not all the rights given by "their creator" [notice no particular god was named intentionally as to keep religion separate from the state] are "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness"

The Founders were well aware of "Greek democracy" and understood the follies of allowing the
"tyranny of the majority" dictate the rights of the minority - as well as "might makes right" [or the "golden rule" those that have the gold make the rules]

Rights are for all not just for a certain select few, your religion should be allowed to have any dogma it wants as long as it doesn't infringe on the liberty of those who are not members of your religion.

Marriage has 2 separate parts a civil part that gives people rights some of which are progeny, guardianship, probate etc. these rights should not be taken away from anyone - in fact there is no reason that polygamy should be outlawed either.

If you would like the word "Marriage" to be only between one man and one woman then you should support all the Laws to be changed so that in all cases the word "marriage" is removed and replaced by "Civil Union" and "wife/husband" is replaced with "spouse(s)". The only other addition should be one that says "No Religious organization shall be required to preform a religious union contrary to its doctrine, nor discriminated against for refusal to perform such a union" -- there are others what would be against this because it would allow religions to not marry same-sex, inter-racially, or inter-religiously, my answer to that if the people wanting to be joined against the dogma then they should just join a religion that allows it, and since it has no effect on the legal standings of the parties its not a problem.

Any religion should be able to conduct what ever sort of marriage they believe as long as all the participants are willing.

Yes, young children don't need to be specifically taught about sex, but the do need to be taught that some people have 2 mommies or 2 daddies, just like some mommies are not the same race as the daddies
or the children, some are adopted and some are not.

    • See, this is the problem. If you are gay you understand that being gay is not a choice. I am not gay but I have come to the knowledge that it is in fact not a choice. In time it will become known scientifically that it is something that happens in the genes.

Religion will probably still cling to their belief that it is a blasphemy against God like as if it is their long lost baby blanket. I know, the bible states that homosexuality is a blasphemy. Many things that the bible states are now quite obvious to be lies or misguided claims.

With regards to the initial post, the Mormons spent close to 24 million dollars of tithe payers money to help push their opinion or belief into the fight on Prop 8. Much of this was done through negative commercials and adds against the gay community and their side of Prop 8.

This was and is a direct and hostile attack on the gay community. This attacked much of what they hoped for and deserved to have just like any other citizen. This also attacked them as individuals and not their lifestyle as it is not a lifestyle but a fact of life.

Now that Mormons are being bombarded with return fire they run for the hills crying foul. They are being challenged as to the rightfulness of their "I know it is true and therefore it is" mentality.

Figuratively speaking, they have kicked what they assume and claim to be a dog; now that the dog is biting them back they can't understand why.
I whole heartedly say: bite on!

It isn't the biting back that bothers me. It is the lies, misrepresentations, and vicious name calling. Those who voted for Prop 8 may not seem right but they did and do have the freedom to vote their conscience. It is the big picture that we are concerned about protecting. No one is trying to take the right of living together, raising children together, living in any neighborhood, enjoying the other rights of domestic. I just think it is mean to put up signs like "Fuck Mormons" when you all know very well that if I put a sign like that up on my house about gays the media and government would force me to take it down. You want a double standard, one for those who agree with you and another for those who do not. That is what upsets me and why I bother to waste my time writing these opinions. It would make more sense to turn the tide and try to do away with marriage all together and call it all domestic partnership. Most marriages don't last anyway. Personally it all seems rather futile.

Gays are the only ones doing the bashing....Californians, Mormons and non Mormons merely exercised their rights as United States citizens.

OK Gram's, Im sure in your small little world gays choose their lifestyle, just like they choose what they want for lunch.

Heres my American right to free speech: Lets say that, just like you don't like gay people, I don't like fat people? Who's to stop me from suggesting that (as ass backward as it is) all fat people should be made into candles?

Discrimination is WRONG! What are you teaching your grandkids! The fact that we are even having this conversation is embarassing!

First of all I do not hate gay people. My heart aches for them and what they have had to deal with especially in their own families. Second I have never suggested nor would I that Homosexuals be punished, ostracized, or mistreated in any way. Just as a pedophile does not "choose" to be attracted to children I imagine that homosexuals do not "choose" to be attracted to the same sex. Most over weight people do not choose to "feel" hungry all the time. However, each "choose" what they decide to do about it. I don't know what the answers are seanblossom. I do know that putting words into someone's mouth just because they do not agree with you has never solved anything. Oh and I teach my grandchildren to love God, obey His laws, and love and be kind to everyone.

Your so off base is laughable:
First: To compare what two adults in their home, to Pedophillia is hateful and wrong. Its this logic that breeds hate, and why things like prop 8 happen.
Second: Gays don't want you to feel sorry for them. They don't want you to do anything accept not fuck with their life or liberty. When you say that Californian's and Mormons exercised their right- you are saying its OK to HATE people and take away their rights. YOU ARE A BIGOT! That is what you are teaching your kids when you teach them to love God.
Its embarasing. and you should be ashamed.

Gram's seemed to want to continue this conversation outside the public domain - my sending me messages attacking my views:

First of all I was not at all comparing pedophilia to homosexuality. I did not mention pedophilia at all. I was bringing out the point that there are many feelings and desires that one can experience and that they do not have to be acted upon. Re: sexual thoughts toward children, sexual attraction towards the same sex, and I also mentioned the feeling of constantly being hungry. There are feelings and emotions not science. I included appetite in there but you totally missed that. Why is it that it is not commonly believed that all "out of the norm" sexual behavior is because one is born that way. One who has sexual desire towards children is not a pedifile unless they act upon that desire. There is no basic right here. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Civil Unions protect the rights of homosexuals and they should be allowed, recognized and protected. The concern that Christians have is that Homosexuals want the rest of us to accept their choices as the norm. That just isn't true. It is about choice, freedom and majority not hate at all. The only hate i see is the hate you spew at me.

I guess you take away someones rights then they spew hate? And while her arguments are still ass- backwards my explination is still lost in the mire of mormon ignorance. what do you think?

Another day another note from Grams:
But that is what you don't get. Why should you project your ideology on me. It is the same thing. I believe that abortion is murder yet I live in a country that condones it so I have to deal with that an accept it because the majority have spoken. The majority in California do not believe that marriage should be between same sex partners. They believe their is a difference between marriage and union. No one is trying to stop that. People live together all the time. Those who believe it is wrong tolerate it but it is our right to speak out against it just as it is your right to speak out for it. Why do You have the superior right?

What grams seems to forget in these personal diatribes is the seperation of church and state and the idea of a representative democracy. Her religious views allow polygamy, and 'holy' magic underwear yet gays cant merry.

I have not attacked your views. Just the opposite. I have only sought to clarify mine and the facts. I am very new to this whole blogging thing. I am merely answering these things where i see a little "reply" box. It was never my intention to try to hide anything from the "public domain." It is interesting to me that you used the phrase "Representative democracy." as an example of my ignorance. Perhaps you need to look that up. This is exactly why Prop 8 passed, because others were exercising their rights.I have addressed you in a polite and civil manner and you have reply to me in an attacking and degrading way. Why do you keep bringing up separation of church and state? It has nothing to do with this issue. No one is tying to convert or force anyone to follow religious doctrine. This is about the freedom to vote as we believe. I am not happy about a lot of laws, or legislation that has been passed in the last 50 years but I live in a country that allows freedom to vote one's conscience. Everyone won't always be happy but if we seek to magnify the rights of some by disallowing them a voice of others we will loose our freedoms.

See there you go. You can't discuss the subject objectively and factually so you have to attack me personally. I did not take away anyone's rights anymore than the Supreme court took away the right of the unborn. The only issue at hand is the definition of marriage. That is our country. It is about majority and voting conscience. If you take away that right from others you will eventually loose it for all.

I received this in MY inbox. Prime example of the double standard I mentioned.

"You obviously dont have the capacity to talk about the issue: and as i said before i think that this conversation is over. if you keep e-mailing me i will block you after some rather unplesant words. POST ON THE THREAD I have tried to convey my oppinions to you -you somehow think that you know more about this issue then i. You insult me by comaring me to a pedophile, you think your ass backwards mormon faith is "holier than I" The constitution protects LIBERTY, not RELIGION, this country is a melting pot, do you not think that mormons should be able to live here. Might i remind you that mormon had to move to Utah to get away from religious persecution. Every arguement that you come at me with has been rife with lies and innuendos. And im sick of being insulted im my in-box."

Actually it was my comment to the picture you posted that started it all. I thought it was "bashing" and told you so. I did not at anytime compare you to a pedophile. I am sorry that you do not seem to understand my use of parables, allegories, or analogies in conversation. I apologize for using them. I have not thrown any insults at you at all except to state my opinions which disagree with yours and to point our your rude replies to me. I have stayed focused on the point which I thought was discussion of Mormon involvement in the passing of Prop 8 and why they have that right. Yes the constitution protects liberty and what is important is that it protects the liberty to believe, vote and protest our conscience. If I, Mormons, Catholics, Agnostics, and others do not have that right but you do that is not liberty. It is something else entirely. That is the point here. I have stayed on it. However, this whole line of conversation is pointless because we do not speak the same language.

Ok Grams- maybe i learned something different in high school then you did (but then the literacy rates are a lot different now then when you were growing up) BUT. . . First you compared Gays to pedophiles then you compared abortion rights to this argument, and yet you complain that I am confusing the issue: (AND that im being hateful)

Your quote- "I did not take away anyone's rights anymore than the Supreme court took away the right of the unborn" Fuck the unborn, you are a Mormon, you have posted your views multiple times, Mormons contributed the majority of money for yes on 8 ( as you have attacked me via email I urge you to read this report: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pe2023SzWXxE8wYX5qWeoIw) YOU VOTED TO TAKE AWAY MY RIGHTS!

You said "The only issue at hand is the definition of marriage." and you said in an email to me that you think that gays should have the option of civil unions- Here's where the shit gets hard. Civil Unions are not legally equal to merriage; ask any slave. Separate is not equal! and your definition is a religious one that should not be bound in a civil environment. I do not believe in your religion and i should not be placed under its (insert HATEFUL, DOGMATIC, FUCKED UP) ideology. Yet you think that your church should somehow dictate how i live my life.

This is where you make an ass out of yourself. I dont think that the constitution has changed sense we went to school, but the law was written to protect the minority against the unjust majority. If your thesis were supported we all would still be drinking tea with the british. thats why we elect people to represent us.(Representative Democracy!) If the majority still ruled black people would still be slaves. We elect people to protect the minority from the majority. Your logic suggests that we should still have slaves: the majority of people before the civil war were in favor of slavery.

Not that i think that im ever going to change the views of you or your, magic panty, polygamous, hateful, mormon disciples. I still live with you and your ass backward religion. AND YET YOU TOOK AWAY MY RIGHTS! Tolerance only goes so far. . .
and again thanks for not sending me your hateful emails Grams! BUT, when the gays bash back you got to expect it. i dont shit with out expecting a splash, why should you?
