Amazon is a rare corporate citizen; they have enough market share to encourage their vendors to make changes like this and even create new markets for green products like the kindle.

I've started the "Un-Packaged Movement' Leave all the box's, plastic wrap and polystyrene foam with the person making the profit from selling us rubbish. Or just take it back - try it it's exhilerating. Why should someone else pick up the costs.
May them divert it from landfill at the end of life!
They'll soon get the hint.Join up at www.greenhouseneutral.net

Included in this story should be companies using packaging that can be composted, such as pangaea organics.

great. though I think the more important point here is that they're using greener packaging. they should also encourage customers to recycle once their orders arrive.

I think this is a good idea from amazon, all those products in the plastic packaging are hard to open, especially if you need teeth, knives, sissors etc. just to open. I hope other companies took note of this.
