Ideas like these will elminate the need for Fossil Fuels

Kepano
Thousands of acres of Big Island ranch land are home to cattle and a looming controversy.

"We need land. All the biomass crops are land intensive," John Ray said.

Ray is general manager of SunFuels Hawaii LLC. The Waimea company wants to plant eucalyptus trees and turn the crop into diesel fuel.

"The livestock industry in the state of Hawaii is in a very fragile state," Alan Gottlieb said.

Gottlieb represents seven Big Island ranchers. They would have to share some of the land they lease from the state with SunFuels if the land board says so.

"We're convinced that there are enormous acres in current grazing leases that we believe could be more productive, can still support grazing but could support energy sustainability," Ray said.

He said SunFuels could produce up to 13 million gallons of biodiesel annually, meeting the Big Island's needs for diesel fuel. Much of ranch land SunFuels wants is in the Hamakua area.
