Obama appointing Monsanto buddy Tom Vilsack as USDA head would be a terrible idea

* The biggest biotechnology industry group, the Biotechnology Industry Organization, named Vilsack Governor of the Year. He was also the founder and former chair of the Governor's Biotechnology Partnership.
http://www.bio.org/news/pressreleases/newsitem.asp?id=200...
* When Vilsack created the Iowa Values Fund, his first poster child of economic development potential was Trans Ova and their pursuit of cloning dairy cows.
* Vilsack was the origin of the seed pre-emption bill in 2005, which many people here in Iowa fought because it took away local government's possibility of ever having a regulation on seeds- where GE would be grown, having GE-free buffers, banning pharma corn locally, etc. Representative Sandy Greiner, the Republican sponsor of the bill, bragged on the House Floor that Vilsack put her up to it right after his state of the state address.
* Vilsack has a glowing reputation as being a schill for agribusiness biotech giants like Monsanto. Sustainable ag advocated across the country were spreading the word of Vilsack's history as he was attempting to appeal to voters in his presidential bid. An activist from the west coast even made this youtube animation about Vilsack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmoc4Qgcm4s
The airplane in this animation is a referral to the controversy that Vilsack often traveled in Monsanto's jet.
*Vilsack is an ardent support of corn and soy based biofuels, which use as much or more fossil energy to produce them as they generate, while driving up world food prices and literally starving the poor.

Another administration of cronies? Is this what we will get as change? I sure hope this is not true.

This is so frightening! Why is the government allowing this? It's bad enough that the environment, people's lives and farms and much more are being destroyed by Monsanto and it is bad enough that we are all being used as guinea pigs because they refuse to label our food, but now they after the USDA???
I am so afraid for my health, the health of my family and country right now! This is horrible!

Agreed Jan, there have been several picks that Obama has made to be on his cabinet that have raised my eyebrows. I am amazed that he is working with some of these people at all.

I don't usually complain here, but when someone posted that Clinton was asked to be SOS ( even though she wasn't the only one) it made tv here in a snap. Why not this? I can bet you that any other postings here about "appointments" will only make it to TV here if the person posting it is a supporter of Obama and it is sugarcoated.
I do see bias here regarding how people are treated by other members because of their opinions. This gets voted down simply because it doesn't make Obama look good as if this is all about him, whereas reporting about Clinton somehow makes him look like a "counciliator" when it was probably planned the whole time. I made a video after he was "elected" and congratulated him and said I would be willing to hold his feet to the fire on climate change and work to make this world a better place... that is because I put this planet first but still respect the process if he indeed was elected fairly by the majority of Americans. However, when it comes to this country and especially this planet, he does not take precedence over principle.
I find it alarming that there are supporters of this man who would place him even above this appointment, especially now with the planet in the state it is in.This is not the time for political payback. We need someone in this position who understands the relationship between the farmer and the Earth and someone who will then work to hone that relationship for the betterment of the world... not someone who kisses the ass of Monsanto, and I will fight any appointment of his that does that.

JanforGore,
Business As Usual, that is what this smells like to me.
Anyone who chooses to cooperate with Monsanto, which would include suppressing vital information concerning their dirty deeds, they can (imho) include themselves in the mix of those who do the damage, and that include news organizations who choose to look the other way, so as to keep peace with Monsanto. I hope they can sleep good at night.
I say follow your heart, when trying to do what is right for this ailing planet? That is where truth lies, 'to thine own self be true".

WTF - MONSANTO?! This is the best that President-Elect Obama can do with a high-profile agency that used to help the citizens & not using them as guinea pigs & then customers. Vilsack is clearly not an impartial candidate when we need accountability & transparency.
And not from special interest groups obtaining control of key positions or having them sold to the highest bidder or outsourcing can lead to questions of confidence & trust. I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe, he's not like the rest. Ya right.

As Governor of Iowa he actually had signing ceremonies for bills at Monsanto facilities. That speaks volumes about where his priorities would lie.

I need to know what I can DO about it. Reading and then not acting is depressing to me...

I've read the transcripts of Monsanto asking congress for support. It's scary, "oh we don't have much time so we'll hear from this person" No one to show the opposition, everyone is getting a pay check. In the las financial quarter Monsanto company tripled their revenues... Also I can see there being some sway with their promise of feeding the world with their GM plants. But of course that's not going to happen. Plus it's scary that he especially wants to support GM corn. There's a good video on current about corn use in America, I recommend it to anyone who doesn't know why it's such a bad idea.

And still Monsanto has no comment. Will the Obama administration buck this cronyist system and step on the big corporate toes of Monsanto to call for mandatory labelling of food products to disclose GM ingredients? I would say, his picks to head the agencies involved will give us a pretty good insight into that answer.

The Democrats have received over THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND according to the pie chart above and that is the number I was referring to. But it is obvious that even should he appoint someone who continues the Bush doctrine regarding Monsanto and their unfettered access to the FDA and the USDA and their secrecy to the detriment of consumer disclosure and environmental biodiversity some will find an excuse to then defend it.

In the grand scheme of things 345,000 is nothing compared to 650,000,000.
http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/campaign-finance/map.html
Also, Mr. Obama only received 150 dollars from the democratic party and only 1,280 dollars from PACs(12,000 less then Dennis Kucinch).

You are deliberately missing the point. If all you are going to be is an Obama apologist you are no different than a Bush apologist. Monsanto is an evil company and their methods of purposefully deceiving the American people about the health and environmental effects of their frankenfood crap as well as deliberately working to put small farmers out of business is the point. Having someone in the USDA heading it who will continue those policies and continue to give Monsanto a free ride is the point. I don't give a damn how much money Obama raised. I put this planet first and if he appoints Vilsack to head the USDA I will protest that just as much as I did Ann Veneman being appointed by Bush. Clear?

Oh no they gave 345 dollars to Barack Obama, I'm so scared that his views will be influenced by such a minuscule amount! Hell, my family has given him more then that (and were middle class)
Obama's raised over 500,000,000 dollars, It is ridiculous (and unreasonable) to think he'll be swayed by such a small amount.

Looks like Democrats have been doing well with Monsanto contributions. It isn't surprising then that they will be paid back once again to the detriment of our environment.

Oh man so true. Even more scary is that the country is so divided by the two party system that it causes us to only choose between two options, when both are corrupt. And then people believe in the option that their party representative supports, therefore we believe and support the corruption.

I hope Obama has other people in mind for this post besides just paying people back and appointing every DLC member out here. Vilsack would be tantamount to appointing Ann Veneman again. And pharma crops mixing in with food crops through transgenic contamination is a dangerous thing. I'm still trying to see the "change" here.

The last line of the video goes something like this:
paraphrasing here......
Industry says; you can't prove there are any effects from using GMO.
Man in Interview; we certainly can't prove it, cause gmo isn't labeled.
........
Me; what will it take to get the labels on food?
"IRT’s free Non-GMO Shopping Guide is available now! Soon it will be in stores nationwide. This first edition lists those products for which the food manufacturer has organized their processing to avoid GMOs and enrolled in the Shopping Guide. We will be adding new manufacturers continuously and up-dating the downloadable version regularly." (source link above)
