A correlation between testosterone, finger length and aggression

The length of a man's fingers can reveal how physically aggressive he is, Canadian scientists have said.

The shorter the index finger is compared to the ring finger, the more boisterous he will be, University of Alberta researchers said.

The trend is thought to be linked to testosterone exposure in the womb.

It has been known for some time that there is a direct correlation between finger lengths and the amount of the male sex hormone testosterone that a baby is exposed to in the womb. In women, the two fingers are usually almost equal in length, as measured from the crease nearest the palm to the fingertip. In men, the ring finger tends to be much longer than the index.

This subject has fascinated me ever since I watched a TV program about it on OPB. It really highlighted the fact that men and women have different strengths and weaknesses.

The same program also talked about the fact that men only hear with one side of their brain while women hear with both. Hmmm...

    • i heard something similar a while back about how foetuses exposed to more testosterone, even females, are likely to have longer ring than index fingers, though in girls it means more tomboy-like characteristics (guess that explains why I never liked dollies and makeup then).

    • Now that we've identified all these aggressive trouble makers with short index fingers let's go ahead and teach them all a lesson. For some reason I'm inclined to say that it probably depends on the person but then again maybe I'm defending my short little index fingers.

    • Funny it's a Canadian that discovers this I guess the Yanks had their Thumbs and fingers up their asses and would have never realized this. HAHA.

    • What happens if you don't have that finger? Does that mean you were so freaking rough that destiny said, "we made a mistake, we _NEED_ to chop that finger off!" ?

    • I like to use my fingers aggression to arouse my lover so I can relieve my built up testosterone level; then I feel all cuddly and mellow...

    • I thought "they" found some sort of weird correlation between finger length and being gay. Sounds potentially mythical to me....

I haven't heard that. What I did hear was that the size of the hypothalamus in the brain may have a correlation with being gay. The hypothalamus in men are larger than in women (usually). The hypothalamus in gay men had more similarities with those of women than straigh men; this is according to the study performed by Simon LeVay.

My sentiments exactly. That's why I consider stuff like this "junk science". It is based on an assumption of what an "aggressive man" is. Rosie Greer was a terrific football player AND he enjoyed knitting. Because a person is aggressive in a certain area doesn't mean the person is inherently aggressive, it means they CAN BE aggressive when necessary, nothing more.

The program I watched on this did more male female specific type tests...ie...opperating equipment, handling children.

Finger length would determine how people performed the given task regardless of gender.

They did have them race go carts while monitoring their adrenaline levels. It was hilarious. Those with ring fingers much longer than their index fingers were ahead most of the time but never won because as soon as they were passed their adrenaline levels shot up and they made rash decisions that usually landed them in the dirt.

    • No doubt, this is an important study. It is important to study physiological factors that make us who we are. It would be more interesting to know how enviroment affects our agressive tendecies along with the testoserone levels.

    • It is merely conjecture that testosterone is a main force in aggression, but it definately does affect it. We are still young as a species and our evolutionary psychology is just beginning to catch up to our current roles and needs within our social sructure.

In primal/tribal situations men had to be aggressive to survive. This is not a factor anymore and as we interbreed with eachother this is sl;owly changing. We are not even into 1000 yrs of our current sociological structure.

My main point is that it is not a gender issue and women are just as agressive and/or violent as men. I bet the finger rule would workfor women as well, but the author of the article is using gender specific terms.

    • I think we are missing the point. I have always wondered ( NO offense to the wonderful and kind men of the world), if men's Testosterone contributes to the agression of fights, wars, abuse of other types. Lets face it, it is mostly men who cause the wars and fight the wars. My young sons, in spite of living in a harmonious home would go outside, divide up with the neighbor boys and make sticks into guns and play WAR. I was given testosterone about 3 times for an illness, I became a lot more agressive like " I am Woman hear me ROAR"

But yet female sports are so much more competitive......... The act of playing war and gender specific childhood roles is more of a sociological aspect then a body chemistry equation. Remember Cleopatra?? She was hardly peaceful....

We do not have accurate records of Cleopatra's finger lengths.

Yes, aggression is warlike, but so is the mama bear in protecting her cub. Protective aggression, but it does resembles blind violent rage. Even if you are not meaning harm, you can get in big trouble!

Yes, there is a difference between taking and protecting, but both instincts can result in violence.

There are exceptions such as Cleopatra, but I bet if we added them all up, the male species would tip the cup. Women seem to be catching up and often males have more estrogen and females have more testosterone so therefore it would be difficult to measure.

And PMS used to cause me to want to blow something up, but somehow I managed to talk myself out of it...lol

    • Which hand do you use for this? My left index finger is the same length as my left ring finger, but my right index finger is shorter than my right ring finger. Am I a secret hermaphrodite?

Women are not immune. Although they mostly have ring fingers that are shorter than their index fingers.

Those women who do have longer ring fingers are "male brained" and have many of the same strengths as men. Along the lines of aggression, risk taking, job skills, thinking patterns...that type of thing.
