The three adult specimens were discovered remarkably intact and with characteristics never before seen in turtles - including teeth and an incomplete upper shell.
The species was dubbed Odontochelys semistestacea, meaning toothed, half-shelled turtle.
Scientists from Canada, China and the US said the half-shell provided new evidence of how it evolved.
Dr Xiao-chun Wu, a palaeontologist at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, said: "Since the 1800s, there have been many hypotheses about the origin of the turtle shell.
"Now we have these fossils of the earliest known turtle.
"They support the theory that the shell would have formed from below as extensions of the backbone and ribs, rather than as bony plates from the skin as others have theorised."
He believes the lower shell, known as the plastron, formed first followed by an outgrowth and broadening of the backbone and ribs to form the upper shell, or carapace.

The facts listed are interesting, but a picture of the fossil would be nice, so we could see the connection...

I always thought turtle shells were like Clothing, and they could just jump in an out of them like in cartoons.

Then you might be interested to know that when a famous US wildlife rescue center gets turtles in their center that have severely fractures shells, they not only do nothing for first aid or keeping the fracture from moving around - they treat it like nothings wrong with the turtle. When asked, why a turtle was left swimming with this gaping crack in its shell, they claimed it was not a serious injury. Shocking.

i find it amazing that turtles' shells developed from a fusing of bones from inside their bodies, I mean, the idea that evolution pretty much turned them inside-out is just mind-boggling!

That's a very interesting and plausible theory.
It makes much more sense, when looking at a turtle skeleton, to reference this theory than the other theory involving skin scales.

If I recall right, the Chinese created their numerology from the turtle shell.
So I believe it is a revered creature that brings good fortune if you use its shell properly to calculate your fortune in your life.

I think thats just an assumtion on the obvious... so the bottom formed before the top shell... wow .. thats so dull.. find me when you get some hardcore facts like they killed a different speicies to genetically start a new trend of shells... somthing cool like that

Wow. I never really thought about how turtles got their shells. It's kind of amazing to imagine how these animals (and humans) will evolve in another million years.

The evolutionary track for each species is different, especially on different planets... it's fun to envision possibilities with all the potential science available to us! and knowing the past helps predicate the future. a million years is nothing but from our humanic perspective...
turtles live a LONG time relative to our standard span...*turtles are so neat, save the salmonella*
