Whale songs drowned out by human noise pollution

Image
MeganMcKenzie
Whales and other creatures of the deep suffer not only from damaged food supplies and polluted waters; they also suffer from noise pollution which prohibits them from hearing songs and other vital sounds from their species.

According to the UN and environmentalists it is not just Navy sonar that is impacting these imperiled animals.

    • There is an action to reforest mountains in Southern California. I think we can take up actions directly affecting our Earth partners...

I find working from Peace without the desire to win or lose makes a big difference.

    • California, which depicts itself as the most ecological state, is the largest polluter of our oceans. San Francisco needs to turn about face and instead of making itself the most liberal city in the USA, take actions against the garbage dumped into it's ocean and protect their incredible ecosystem. Forget the gay pride parades, the gay marriage ceremonies, clean up the waste going into the Pacific Ocean.

    • And I think it is only to get worse. Many South and Central American countries (most recently Colombia) are beginning to look to the oceans for possible oil reserves and have exactly zero mitigation policies in place.

They take the advice of the seismic companies contracted for exploration and establish pseudo-regulations intended only to minimize problems that arise from mitigating procedures designed to reduce sound pollution and protect marine mammals.

    • We all can feel outrageous to what is happening with amphibians and animals and ignore what is happening to humans. The City of San Francisco it is one of the greatest noise polluter in the Country and it has been done for 8 Years under many of its citizens's nose and ears without any substantial protest. Wake up people!

    • It seems the smarter we get the more we realize that we are damaging the planet.

Wouldn't surprise me if a year or two from now we found out that the reason the bees are diapering is because sound waves from people listening to ipods are making them rebel against the queen leading to a hive collapse.

    • apparently similar things are happening with elephants (who make very low-frequency vibrations in the ground for mating calls) and songbirds - the dawn chorus is getting earlier and earlier to beat commuter traffic.

We really need to hush up as a species.

    • I hope we can figure a way to quiet our tech so that we can ocean life can thrive along side of technology and humans as we use the oceans more and more.

    • Thats really sad! Man does not realize the pollution he has brought to the earth. And the only pollution many care about is the pollution that effects them. Simple things such as street lamps have had a negative impact on creatures.

    • animalia_libero:

Thank you for adding this piece animalia (and megan) - yes, the ever increasing and deafening sounds of man's machinery and t.v./radio psycho babble piercing the ear waves, only assisting us to disconnect even further from our own inner resources of spirit and soul. I ponder every day if many people actually notice how these cacophonous sounds negatively affect us, constantly grinding on our nervous systems, degrading our own personal energy systems and sensitivity toward each other. On the other hand, there is nothing (at least to me) of the songs of the birds, the wind rustling the leaves of trees, a babbling brook, a child's sweet laughter, and oh, those songs of the whales - so utterly moving!
