New Ad Pokes Fun at “Clean” Coal

justright
About the Reality Campaign
In reality, there is no such thing as clean coal in America today. Coal cannot be called 'clean' until its CO2 emissions are captured and stored safely.
Let's be clear: there are no US homes, factories, shopping centers or churches powered by coal plants that capture and store their global warming pollution.
Today, coal power plants emit carbon dioxide (CO2), the pollutant causing the climate crisis. A third of the America's carbon pollution now comes from about 600 coal-fired power plants. And of the more than 70 proposed new coal power plants, barely a handful have plans to capture and store their CO2 emissions. If these dirty plants are allowed to be built, this will mean an additional 200 million tons of global warming pollution will be emitted in America each year. Until coal power plants no longer release CO2 to the atmosphere, coal will remain a major contributor to the climate crisis.
Scientists indicate that we can avoid the worst climate impacts if we turn CO2 emissions around in the next few years. The Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, in 2007, said, "If there's no action before 2012, that's too late. What we do in the next two to three years will determine our future. This is the defining moment." For coal to maintain a role in America's energy mix, the industry must act quickly to stop emitting CO2.
The Reality Coalition is a project of the Alliance for Climate Protection, Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the League of Conservation Voters, and tells the truth about coal today — it isn't clean. We are challenging the coal industry to come clean — in its advertising and in its operations. You can learn more about the reality of clean coal here or take action and help stop misleading coal campaigns.

    • ha ha! that was a funny ad. but the paragraphing attached does not squarely present the facts.

      1. "Clean coal" is NOT referring to coal fired plants.
      2. Coal fired plants emitt WAY MORE than just CO2 emissions. They emit NOX and SOX and are strong polluters in our country.
      3. There IS coal technology that is 'clean.' It is called "gasification." Through gasification no/zero/zilch NOX or SOX are emitted into the atmosphere. That represents HUGE environmental clean up progress.
      4. ALSO, the latest generation gasification technology (www.zeep.com) produces CO2 at temperature and pressure that is productively useful (ie fishery stimulation) and all of this CO2 is SEQUESTERED and NOT emitted into the atmosphere.

Please understand GASIFCATION. It IS a clean coal technology. And has NOTHING to do with coal fired plants. Implementation of this technology in our country will greatly advance the cause of cleaning up our environment.

    • Neither joking nor protesting will get us anywhere. If we want change, we must not wait for other people to act. The people of the nations have to take the worlds issues into their own hands.

    • What we need is a Large quantity of human volunteers, Oh ...say 4 billion would do. These volunteers will be greatly be helping man kind. Euthanasia doesn't even hurt that much. Just get to gather the willing participants and we as a remaining people will make it happen. K? I'll check back in 3 days and see how progress were having. There are a few rules to follow. No children, No women between 18 and 36, everybody else is eligible, I of course can't either I will have to supervise the whole operation. And my sperm will be needed for repopulation in certain areas. Natural means of course.

    • Great video!! People should really band together to report things like this more often. Haven't you noticed majority of politicians and most of the mainstream media make a big deal about "environmentally friendly" ideas by corporations or organizations, like Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, before thinking about the consequences very carefully? The same thing happened with corn ethanol. Corn ethanol caused an increase in deforestation and starvations all around the world. It's pure greed! Anyway, great video!

    • Coal's best use is to make 'coal tar' to be used in chemical applications.

Bituminous coal is so full of sulfur, I can't see how you clean it.

Anthracite is better, but it still has many pollutants in it.

If you have to 'burn' anything for energy it ends up dirty.

Open your eyes JT! This is a twisted ad that lies about every aspect it mentions. The future is determined by now, coal doesn't grow, and its messing up the ozone layer. Besisdes, half of the clip was random and irrelevant phrases, such as:
      "My friend owns a pool."

Whoever made this knows that if he doesn't try to convince people that coal is good, he will be out of a job soon.

    • No amount of coal cleaning or scrubbing works. I lived between two coal plants for 42 years, and believe me they are dirty polluters.

Clean coal? Prove it to me!

True! I can't figure out whether he was 'playing to the West Virginia vote' along with some other states with coal-fired electricity plants or he really believes that cr@p.

At ANY rate, he should be brought up to speed and quit repeating an "ad slogan" dreamed up by corporatists and their lobbyists.

It's like their ads about beating clean air deadlines when they got Congress to push back those deadlines.

They are liars, cheats and crooks.

    • Coal is not clean but could be made so by environmentalists. It is a cheap fuel source but dangerous as it stands now. Joking about it will get us nowhere.

Joking about the ad verbiage WILL draw attention to the dishonesty.

Ridicule is a powerful form of protest.

Think of it as peer pressure or peer review. While we need other actions, until it becomes unpopular and is exposed as a lie to call coal "clean" we will continue to hear it used by corporatists,

    • I read 'em, Horntho. It's just that almost everybody here knows what comes from the mouths of lobbyists is pure, unadulterated cr@p.

The coal fired power plants have even gotten legislation passed (1) to extend clean air deadlines and (2) to get EXTRA credits for plant modifications that can "counter-balance" outdated emission controls at some of their older plants by using a bargained for "point system".

Those point systems they use are like saying you get to kill one person for everyone whose life you may have saved.

So I get points for stopping at red signal lights and that makes me immune to prosecution if I run a green one and kill someone? ROTFLMAO!

Don't you just love "Corporate Speak"?

The TV ad is a clever one but may be a little too "tongue-in-cheek" for the dumber FAUX "News" Channel types.

    • Finally, some one said it! I have been mystified why all of our politicians all the way up the chain to Obama kept touting "clean coal". How can so many smart people, especially Obama, continually push this non-existant technology? Shoot, its not even like they are advertising a new technology, coal companies just attached the word "clean" to their current coal production process then spent a lot of money on advertising. Is our government so easily manipulated by false advertising?
