21 new species in danger of extinction

Twenty-one animal species, including the cheetah, three dolphin families and an Egyptian vulture, were added to the list of those in danger of extinction by a UN conference in Rome.

Six other bird species as well as manatees have also been placed on the list of animals benefiting from increased protections, called list I.

In addition, next year has been proclaimed the "Year of the Gorilla" to help the survival of threatened species.

The findings were made at a conference of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals held in the Italian capital.

Several species of sharks have been placed on the list of threatened species, including two families of Mako sharks in the Mediterranean whose population have fallen off by 96 per cent in recent years due to overfishing.

    • Haven't Snow leopards been on the endangered list for a long time, but are still hunted due to the way they feast on sheep, they go into a frenzy and a single snow leopard will kill easily 100+ in one attack.

    • I've said it before and I'll say it again: some one get their god damn DNA. The human race is not going to slow its rapid expansion for the plite of a few animals and we can not rely soley on the efforts of activists to save them. We must expand DNA banks to all life before natures code is lost forever.

    • i think black water should up its credibility bye sending special ops to go hunt poachers, therefore scareing anyone else who wants to hunt endangered species.

    • What makes me even more upset is that I've heard people say that don't believe human beings are really the cause for extinction of animals. Because of that, they don't think it's their responsibility to help protect them.
      Do they think they all just disappear?
      There are so many times where the decreased population of a species is directly caused by hunters.

      I hope that people change their attitudes soon.

      And I love manatees!!!

    • You know I always though "Why don't the police use cheetahs instead of dogs?" They would be much more effective at chasing down criminals.

    • I wonder why people do not care more about these animals. There are not stupid animals only here for us to destroy...

      I am glad some people help them though.
