Dogs can be jealous, say scientists

Psychologists previously believed most animals lack the "sense of self" needed to experience so-called secondary emotions such as jealousy, embarrassment, empathy or guilt. These emotions are more complex than feelings associated with instant reaction – such as anger, lust or joy.
Dr Friederike Range, of the University of Vienna's neurobiology department, has shown that dogs feel intense jealously when they spot that they are unfairly treated compared with other dogs. "Dogs show a strong aversion to inequity," she said.
The dog study is the latest into several species, including cows, horses, cats and sheep, which have shown that animals are far more self-aware than was thought.
Dr Paul Morris, a psychologist at the University of Portsmouth who studies animal emotions, told The Sunday Times: "We are learning that dogs, horses, and perhaps many other species are far more emotionally complex than we ever realised. They can suffer simple forms of many emotions we once thought only primates could experience."
In research among dog owners, Dr Morris found almost all of them reported jealous behaviour by their pets. The dog often tried to prise their owner away from a new lover in the early days of a relationship.

That's a good picture. Dogs love to put their head out the window of a moving car. When I'm around more than one dog they always fall all over each other trying to get my attention. I can tell the one who is getting left out becomes either mad or depressed.

Of course. Yesterday I took my dog to the dog park and I was petting another dog when out of nowhere comes my dog running full speed at me!

This is very obvious. Dogs, horses and other "pack" animals are very aware of their social standing in the hierarchy. I'm not sure if I would call it jealousy, so much as just instinctive assertion of dominance over another member of the pack.
P.S. I don't believe the crazy cat lady. Every cat I've had could care less about things like this. They do come running for the wet canned food though.

I agree with everyone here. All pet owners see this type of behavior at some point. With my dog, everytime my girlfriend and I hug, he'll walk up and wedge himself between us. I guess it could mean that he wants to be part of the hug or he's trying to pry me away from her. Either way, he's got issues but I love him!

haha, I see that with my auntie's dog all the time - gets angry even if I give other people attention, let alone the cat. funny how pet owners always get so discredited by scientists.
in terms of survival, it makes sense, after all, we're all driven to make the best for ourselves and for social pack animals such as dogs, it would be an advantage to be closer to the pack leader - jealousy just gives that little extra push.

I thought it has been known for a while that dogs get jealous, it seems so obvious. But I don't reckon that means they have a sense of self....

Well duh!! Has any of these scientists ever owned a dog before? One of my boyfriend's dogs goes crazy if I pay too much attention to the other one, and tries to push the other one out of the way.

I think as humans we wanted to think they did not have these complex emotions because then we could treat them like crap and not feel bad. KNow that we are acknowleding the obvious maybe we can be more humane as whole to our animal friends.

Seems a bit obvious.
The way my family's Chihuahua looks at our Dachshund when she gets a better treat can only be described as evil.

How could anyone not know that dogs can get jealous. I picture some guy in a white coat with thick glasses who's so far into his head he has to experiment to discover what every one else already knows.
