GMO contamination in Mexico-s cradle of corn

Raise the alarm for Mexican corn-s biosecurity: a molecular study conducted by Mexican, American and Dutch researchers demonstrates the presence of genes from genetically modified organisms (GMO) among the varieties of traditional corn cultivated in the remote regions of Oaxaca State in the southern part of the country, even though the Mexican government has always maintained a moratorium on the use of transgenic seed.

The results of this study incite the experts to demand much more restrictive protective measures. Old time agriculture as practiced in Mexico - where wind-blown pollination of corn is the norm and where peasants are in the habit of exchanging their seed - seems to aggravate the risk of rapid GMO contamination.

An article that details their conclusions should be published in the next edition of the review, Molecular Ecology. It was written by Elena Alvarez-Buylla of the Institute for Ecology of the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM), with the collaboration of a dozen other scientists.

Their work could relaunch the controversy that was unleashed in 2001 by a highly controversial article in the magazine, Nature, the authors of which, biologists David Quist and Ignacio Chapela from the University of California at Berkeley, revealed that criollos (traditional) corn from the Oaxaca region - one of the cradles of that cereal - were contaminated by Roundup Ready (RR) and Bt genes, property of the American company Monsanto.

In her book, The World According to Monsanto, (due for release in March 2009 and already available for pre-order at Amazon.com), Marie-Monique Robin related how Mr. Chapela became a victim of media lynching at that time at the instigation of the dominant company in the GMO market. Nature ended up publishing a disclaimer, deeming that the two biologists article was insufficiently backed up.

However, seven years later, the work Mrs. Alvarez-Buylla directed broadly confirms their conclusions, as a report published in the November 13 Nature emphasizes. The researchers have discovered transgenes in three of the twenty-three fields of Oaxaca-s northern sierra where samples were taken in 2001, then in two places sampled in 2004.

American Allison Snow, of the University of California and author in 2005 of a preliminary study that seemed to undermine Ignacio Chapela and David Quist-s discoveries (and which were then immediately exploited by GMO partisans), is publishing an additional complimentary note in the same issue of Molecular Ecology, in which she judges the molecular analysis conducted by the UNAM team to be very good, bringing to light the positive evidence of transgenes.
snip
The study-s authors call for a strengthening of biosecurity measures to preserve native corn varieties, especially in Mexico, corn-s center of origin. They say Mexico must set up truly independent laboratories and adapt criteria of molecular analysis to the Mexican reality, rather than trusting methods used in countries such as the United States which have an agricultural system entirely different from our own.

But their greatest concern at present involves planned pharmaceutical trusts which want to make a profit on corn biomass and use it as a bioreactor in order, for example, to express vaccines and anti-coagulants. Given the incidents that have already occurred in the United States where they have trouble separating bioreactors from GMO, we may fear that corn could turn into the garbage bin of the pharmaceutical industry, at the expense of its purpose as food, fears Mrs. Alvarez-Buylla. What shall we do when anti-coagulants arrive in Mexican tortilla?

    • Wasn't it a 5-4 vote by the Supreme Court that set a new precedent by allowing a life form to be patented - seeds in this case? Monsanto is nothing more than a heartless corporation out to make as much money as possible by becoming a major-if not the only- supplier of the world's food.

The EPA, FDA & CDC are completely incompetent at keeping its citizens safe from the growing amounts of environmental & manmade contaminants that are permeating the world, not pushing for listing product ingredients & Big Pharma using the consumer like a lab rat.

      Plain & simple-Consumers Beware!

    • And also, farmers in India are complaining that BT crops are killing their livestock. Of course, no one will listen to them because Monsanto rules all. This is simply a sick world we live in when one company can hold so much sway over it. Thanks for the links Vierotchka and Sea Jade. Good to know there are others here who do care about the important issues. I could have posted that Bush got shoes thrown at him today, but frankly at this point it's all anti climactic. This is more important.

    • Part 7 out of 9 - The Future of Food - How GMO Attacks your DNA
There have sadly been more farming families that have been sued by Monsanto. This particular section briefly touches on the Nelson's nightmare - one out of a few families that are mentioned in this
important documentary (the issue is addressed in more depth earlier on in the doc, but I knew this section mentioned this personal travesty).
We can assume that there are probably many many more farming families, not only in the Americas but other parts of the world that Monsanto and allies have their eyes on to attain their property if they haven't already got them. Remember an old pattern used, make the farmers go broke by "creating" a crisis, and buy up their land cheap - a ruse used over and over in our history. These sickening monsanto people surely patting themselves on their own backs for being so shamelessly "clever" to create a law that states they own anything contaminated by their warped seeds.
How sickly short sighted and insane is this folly by these would be "god imitators" trying to outsmart natural laws of balance and harmony in nature for a quick buck!

I've started to call companies, Gardenburger for example (the original veggie burger) uses GMO corn in their veggie burgers (I called them to ask them and they were honest in their response) so I let them know unless they created "organic" non GMO products I would not eat their food again. I also ask in restaurants now if they know where their food comes from - not that i eat out much anymore...

    • Presentation in England by Percy Schmeiser (Canadian Farmer) who stood up against Monsanto and won in court. This case could set precendent which can be used by others to stop contamination of their crops. In the past Monsanto has been sucessful in court aginst the little farmers, but now the tide is turning. Reportedly strong arm techniques were being used by Monsanto to get their way in the past. Has justice prevailed? He is touring the UK to spread his message.
      ------
Percy Schmeiser is a Canadian farmer whose land became contaminated with GM oil seed rape. Percy took on Monsanto in the courts to keep his right to save seed and has gained international recognition for his work in raising awareness of the knock on effects for farmers of GM contamination. In the past decade he and his wife have travelled the world recounting their astonishing experiences. In 2007 they were awarded the internationally recognised Right to Livelihood Award.

The only venue in the South West will be at Kingston Maurward College in Dorchester Dorset.

The Dorset meeting will be Chaired by Fanny Charles Editor of Stour and Avon, Fosse Way and Blackmore Vale Magazines.

The opening speech will be by Michael Hart of Family Farms Association. Michael farms in Cornwall.

The scientist to accompany Percy on 28th will be Dr. Ricarda Steinbrecher of EcoNexus. (for details PTO)

    • I believe it was a Canadian farmer whose canola fields got contaminated by Monsanto canola seeds that fell out of a truck that was driving past his field. As far as I can remember, he lost against Monsanto and was totally ruined by Monsanto's suits.

    • Several years ago I read about a farmer that was being sued by a large corporation because his land had GMOs on it, and he didn't even know it.
It had become contaminated with that crap.
I don't remember the name of the corp. but it was probably Monsanto.
I don't remember the outcome of the suit.

    • This is most alarming news. Winds and weather conditions can carry pollen way up in the atmosphere and deposit it half a world away. It would seem that there is nowhere in the world that is safe from GMOs whose pollination is effected by the wind.

    • It is for sure evil, queenofit. There is no disputing that. It is like a cancer spreading its darkness across the world. I believe in The World According To Monsanto it was said that the true health effects of GMOs may not be known for thirty years. They have only been in our stores for about ten, and yet we have seen a rise in diabetes, obesity, cancer, thyroid problems, allergies, childhood allergies, early puberty, and other illnesses like IBS for which doctors cannot pinpoint an exact reason for. Is it all from GMOs? Will we ever know?

Had it not been for Bush 41 deregulating the industry
so that Monsanto could get these fake foods approved we might have the answers now and be able to do more to stop the poisoning of our world. I would love to see a nationwide boycott of Monsanto and all companies that sell foods with GMOs in them. However, that will not be a possibility until more people are made aware of their dangers. Next year will then be a busy one.

    • This news makes me sick on so many levels, that I am not sure how to even begin my comment.

First the photo: Another that my brother took on his visit to Mexico. This market photo depicts what stirs me most.
Corporate monsters who continually prey upon this humble lifestyle is beyond my comprehension.

The idea that comes to my mind is a vision of an entity that has morphed into a life sucking monster that is spreading like a deadly deformed creature across our beautiful sacred lands.

It is one thing to have this freaking corporation in our country, but the very idea that its tentacles are reaching into that culture to destroy it, is to me criminal and beyond.

      When will this end?

Thank you for posting that information. There are also helpful tips for people to avoid GMOS at the Institute for Responsible Technology site:

This is why who Obama appoints as Sec of Agriculture is so crucial now. Is it just coincidence that other posts are being named and this post has yet to be announced?

    • "The Future of Food", is also essential viewing to understand the ramifications of this insanity in producing frankenfoods.
Those of us who can, collect organic and heirloom seeds as much as possible while we can, there will come a day when those seeds, if kept properly, will be extremely valuable for our civilization.
Stop using chemical/synthetic fertilizers and weed killers (remember all weeds have some medicinal or useful value and were re-named "weeds" to shift consciousness regarding "herbs" and their value, not only that, they are often nature's way of "companion planting".) Monsanto and companies that make these toxic cocktails are also responsible for this GMO distaster.
Grow our own organic foods (even if its a few tomatoes in a container) and support local organic growers where possible.
Stop eating junk food and supporting the companies that manufacture and sell it - they are all using GMO's. Stop eating food with corn syrup, it has a negative impact on the body, and is made with mostly GMO's these days... or will be soon! Help farmers in other countries by becoming aware of what goes on behind NAFTA doors and why it is a disaster as are other "free trade agreements".
If we don't clean up our own lives, it will be impossible to create a clean healthy world. As long as these companies can "sell" their disasters to unwitting people, they will keep at it till we all drop!

    • Comprehensive article on the damage transgenes have done to the biodiversity of Mexican corn. Where is the accountability for this?

      From the article:

The CEC, a Montreal-based body set up as part of the environmental aspects of NAFTA, is currently the main international organization that appears to be “in charge” of monitoring and recommending policy on the issue of trans-border transgene contamination in North America, as the contamination came about as a result of trade.

The CEC report comes as part of a legal process initiated by non-governmental organizations in Mexico, led by Greenpeace Mexico, filed under Article 13 of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, which challenges the legitimacy and safety of US corn exports to Mexico.

As part of this process, the CEC created the Maize and Biodiversity Advisory Group and in March 2004 hosted a conference in Oaxaca “Maize and Biodiversity: The Effects of Transgenic Maize in Mexico”. Some of the world’s top corn scientists presented papers on the issue. The conclusions were not earthshaking, but they were significant:

The fact that transgenes have indeed polluted Mexican indigenous corn crops is irrefutable. This backs up the Chapela study and throws the entire incident of its retroactive disavowal by Nature, and the attacks by the biotech community, into sharp relief: it was and continues to be politically-based manipulation of science and the suppression of scientific evidence.

The dynamics of gene flow in corn are extraordinarily complex and scientists know little about how the genetics of transgenes will develop in the Mexican corn populations. Nor does anyone know what the ecological and human health effects will be.

Transgene contamination is currently continuing and will spread, if no action is taken.

The final report and recommendations of the Advisory Group were to have been released this month (June 2004) at a conference in Puebla, Mexico. However, the commission, made up of representatives from the US, Canada, and Mexico, has postponed the release of the report. According to a June 22 article in the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, the commission is under pressure from the US and multinational biotech companies to delay the report, whose release would support the case of an EU ban on transgenic crops from the US. The US is currently challenging, via the WTO, the EU ban.
      __________

And this article is from 2004 and here we are FOUR YEARS later and this is still not resolved. How can anyone believe BT corn is safe for consumption when biotech companies go to such extremes in collusion with governments to cover up reports? And again, another important issue regarding biodiversity, the environment and human health that the MSM in America ignores.

Not only did NAFTA ruin the agricultural industry of Mexico and increase immigration to the US; now the American imports are GM crops and they have now contaminated the traditional corn varieties of Mexico. What will Mexican farmers then have left?

      The challenge to Obama:

Repeal NAFTA, get MONSANTO out of Mexico, and make restitution to those farmers whose lives have been ruined.
