Researchers at the University of Sussex has shown that horses can conjure visual memories of their herd-mates from the sound of their whinnies.
Research shows that the horses were surprised when they heard the "wrong" whinny from a herd-mate. This "cross modal" recognition was thought to be a solely human trait.
