I was pondering the idea of using heat from volcanoes to make energy for a long time, but I just assumed there were some logistical or practical barriers to it and that's why it hadn't been done yet.

Play, Poke, Prod the earth mother. We just have no clue what we are doing. No Clue. The more we mess around with such things the more we are bringing great danger upon ourselves.

If this is practical it would be amazing, there's some serious promise in geothermal energy.

Also just to add one more thing. Like with most things progressive now days. Other countries around the earth are already doing this. It's not new, there actually a geothermal energy plant in Cali!
We've just never heard about it cause if it's not Bush, Iraq, Obama, or Bailout news we don't here about shit!
GO CURRENT!

amazing. when I first heard about this they described it as almost like the equivalent of finding a dinosaur wandering around in the woods, from the amount of ancient geological information they can get from it.

Two things, one who said anything about using or accessing the earths core? Did I miss something. Last I checked no one has come close or will anytime soon.
Next, from what I know getting energy this way puts out only 5% of the carbon emissions we currently put out using current sources of energy. Isn't that worth looking into?

It's called Geothermal Energy. You should look it up.

This is concerning, I could see how someone would want to find the magma core--i think that I would be interested. But I believe that now that we have found it we should leave it be, because I don't need a chain reaction of the earth's magma core affecting our delicate world even more.

I agree with brad2000. What do they have to show that this (accessing the core directly for whatever use) won't endanger the earth's core?

Hardly. Humans have barely even made it to the earth's undifferentiated zone between the crust and mantle.
The Earth's core is safe from humans for a long while.

Drilling in to the very earths core spells trouble for me. We won't be happy until we have sapped every last drop out of this baby.

You do realize we're harnessing heat right? We're not pulling magma out of the ground.
You're an idiot.
We're not killing the earth you pretentious, ignorant whiner, we're killing OURSELVES. The earth is going to get along just fine when we're gone.
Environmentalism is about SCIENCE, not pseudo-Native American spirituality. Educate yourself, you're an embarrassment.

damn. it only take one false move to make falling into even the smallest magma flow the worst step of your life.
i think it would be very hard to use magma as a reliable source or energy for the world, given it can be found anywhere really. - 3 years ago
