Stonehenge was a 'neolithic rave venue'

A Neolithic rave venue to put your modern-day warehouses to shame.
Using a computer model of Stonehenge and a concrete replica to recreate the sounds of the space, Rupert Till of Huddersfield University claims the mysterious megaliths lent themselves to perfect acoustics to amplify a "repetitive trance rhythm."
He even goes so far as to suggest the rhythm played at the time rivaled the tempo of highly technical drum and bass tracks.
Imagine Fred Flintstone with glowsticks.

SamuraiDave is quite right. And - it would have been impossible to know if this 1,500 ton 'amplifier' was going to work, a lot of labour on speculation!

This is one of those theories that works after the fact, I fear. I doubt the builders of stone henge had this in mind considering the construction of the site took generations.
This is kind of similar to people of the Victorian Era believing Atlantis had flying machines and steam engines. When you have a mystery, people want to imprint their own idea and time on it. Had this theory came out 40-50 years ago, it might have read "Stone Henge once host to Beatnik Bongo Poetry Slams"

rave, a tribe dancing, a wedding party, people partying at the henge, all just about the same things. life is not as black as white as some of you think, it's very gray actually.

I think religious/spiritual cermonial site would actually be a better, more accurate fit than "rave venue" =)
But it certainly probably felt like a rave when those ancient Britons probably took hallucinogens that induced trances during ritual ceremonies...

no doubt! but given that it was used for over a thousand years, it might have had several uses as time and generations progressed

Stonehenge was, like, a techno trance rhythm? So we can only understand it now because we have finally caught up? I so want to believe this...

And if they didn't understand chemistry, they most definitely understood alchemy, and the fundamentals of botany. Their probably wasn't much dependancy because everything was clean and rare.

Of course it is. They were built by the druids thousands of years ago. They being descendants from the exodus (of the Elder shamans, priests, and priestesses of pre-dynastic Egypt). Of course they are going to use music to help induce serious meditative states, to help remember ancient esoteric, and to accurately map out the current positions of the heavens.
Damn those savages anyways!

Better living through chemistry before chemistry existed eh?
I'm pretty sure it's not the venue that makes the rave, I would argue it is more of a temporary chemical dependency, but I guess for the sake of arguing this theory, it is a catchy buzzword.

you gotta find the good parties man... unless you had no preference to the music playing and you just wanted a place to do drugs. in that case your night sucked before it even began.

not a rave. a bewitching rhythm of euphoric proportions under a serene star lit sky. no drugs. just a great place to let loose after a week of surviving the elements.

true that. theres alot of good, like-minded people at those parties. "raves" and underground parties like that only exist because of the community of people who just wanna have fun and dance. ...
