According to New Zealand scientists cornflakes, biscuits and soft drinks may be as addictive as cigarettes and are in danger of advertising bans, strict regulations, high taxes and health warning labels.

Scientists have reviewed evidence showing compulsive eating has similar brain mechanisms as drug dependence, and argue that heavily processed carbohydrates have the most potential to cause addiction.

Is this another case of the food police cracking down? Does anybody care? Does anybody admit to having anything other than a balanced diet?

    • I totally feel like smoking some flakes right now, then I'll probably be in need of a big glass of nicotine to help wash down that cold turkey I had last night.

    • This is fucking ridiculous.

If soda is as addictive as cigarettes, I expect smokers to fucking man up and quit cold turkey tomorrow because I never feel like I -need- to drink soda.

This study is makes no sense, because someone -can- become addicted to food then it's the same as a highly addictive substance? Cookies and nicotine are NOT the same.

    • Captain Carbohydrate? that's the best pic I've seen in a while - please tell me he's real..

No wonder the more heavily processed cornflakes always taste better than the natural, organic choices... besides, aren't we also supposed to be naturally addicted to salt? I agree that anything with high levels of artificial ingredients, or even harmful levels of natural ingredients such as salt should be regulated, though the idea of health warnings on packets of cornflakes does seem a bit ridiculous.

    • Are they going to put warning labels on websites such as Current, because this is rather additive, come on, you know it is, admit it.

    • Listen if people like Cornflakes let then have cornflakes.
If people like cigs let them smoke it does not hurt you if some one else indulges in there personal vice whether it be Weed, Cake, Sugar , Soda , it really does not matter what someone does people are still going to gorge themselves on these items. :)

    • I think it comes down to people's minds. If people have addictive tendencies, they'll find something to be addicted to, no matter what is being advertised -- whether it's ciggies, chocolate bars or cereal. I really don't see how spending millions on regulations and warning labels is really going to change people's behaviours significantly.

I agree. Video games have more addicts than anything (without a label). It's obvious that mental addiction is just as strong, if not more. The physical addiction to substances just aides in breaking down the mind.
