Animals have fur, or feathers...duh, I've always thought it's stupid to dress up your pet. Although if you own one and want to have fun dressing it up and playing doll with it, go ahead!!! I don't think people should be prosecuted for doing this, that's going too far...just think in those parents that don't pay a lot of attention to their kids...nothing happen to them and you're going to punish someone who want to play with his/her little pet...next project...let's knit scarves for the giraffes in the zoo ROFL!!!

For those who sent LOL to me. . . . .I'm an old man whose lives alone with his dog. He's very important to me and I haven't trained him because he minds me naturally. Seeing eye dogs perform a vital function and so do dogs who visit old folks homes. And there are lot of people like me who love and need their dogs and the dogs give them love back. You can LOL all you want because I don't let jerks bother me.

Dogs and humans came together a very long time ago and it turned out to be a wonderful match. Dogs and humans give each other love, protection, and loyalty. I have a lab and we communicate as if he is a person. I would never dress him up because that insinuates he's a toy instead of a good friend. Would you require a friend to put on a costume so you can show her/him off for entertainment. I also think a dog should be spared from having to do certain tricks. Teaching him to sit and come when you call is usually a necessary thing to do but making him walk on his hind legs, and other unnatural things is for people's entertainment but humiliating for him. This is abusive. All animals are innocent and should be treated with respect.

Pet is a euphemism for slave. Slavery is immoral. Anyone who supports pet ownership supports slavery and has unsound morals, just as was true for the slave owners in our history books.

All frivolity aside, I take offence to your statement. You got it right uberdeft. this is lol funny. believe me my kids tried this with every pet we had and if they didn't like you couldn't even get the stuff near them. they tried to put soft reindeer horns on our beagles for the christmas parade { that's what it was called back then] no way was either one going for it. we routinely take in pets that would otherwise not be taken care of so they do well with us. some people treat their pets better than their kids. thanks for the laugh.

Q: Kevin, what are the two things Jay hates the most? A: Stupid criminals and stupid people who dress up their pets. If the pet can't whiz or poop don't put costumes on them. Our chaweenie has to have her sweater on to come on the patio when it's cold and still gets under the lap blanket with her momma. If I were to attempt to put an article of clothing on the collie, she would pout at me for a month. Using common sense is usually the answer.

Maybe a little judicious weeding of people breeding and spawing more peple with nothing better to do in the world than worrying about some pug with a little jacket on would work too. Lets everyone put down their guns, put the phones on hold, quit starving/dieing/mutilating/killing and worry about the pugs.

"It has to do with stopping people from dressing dogs up in the dead heat of the summer when it may harm them." Wouldn't this fall under animal abuse laws that are already in place? I linked a site that has info on all state's cruelty laws- it seems to me that if your animal is harmed because you are dressing it up, you are already in legal trouble!

faithicus is right, some dogs NEED coats when they go outside. My old roommate has a yorkie who has very fine hair (more like human hair than dog fur, making him hypoallergenic.) We live in NY and it's damn cold in the winters; with no coat, poor little baby jay jay will freeze! He even has little boots for extra snowy days.
The conversation of PETA wanting to get rid of pet ownership came up, and I have also heard that- and think it's absurd! We've been domesticating animals for thousands of years to live with us- what's wrong with that? I had two St. Bernards that lived full, wonderful lives with us and didn't have to spend all of their time surviving! Now I have two indoor kitties and I love them very much- I think they are perfectly happy and enjoy their cat lives. Get off my jock, PETA!

I hate when people insult activists for actually trying to contribute to society. What do you do to change the world? If you're like most people, you do nothing, which means you're part of the problem. Bad people can do bad things because "good" people let them. As I see it, if you aren't bad but don't do anything good, you're neither good nor bad. You're just there, taking up space.

I own Mini-Daschunds,both long & short-haired, Who ride on My Motorcycle with Me in customized saddlebags complete with doggy-fairing windshields & a "gas tank saddle"...& in cooler weather, They are quite pleased to wear their sweaters, or Doggy-Tailored Jackets (pseudo "Carhartt" or Leather)to the point of standing calmly while gearing up...believe Me, when they object to something, they have no qualms to making it known, as anyone with Daschies will tell You.
I suppose the RSPCA will claim I'm abusing them by taking them riding, too, but They've never seen Them throwing a fit if I try to get on the Bike without them. ( & They're thoroughly "leashed/strapped in, I don't trust their tiny little daschie minds to NOT try & chase a rabbit or what have You while riding, They have NO sense of physics...) - 3 years ago

my dog owns a coat, only because she has very short hair and lives in the northeast region of the USA. if she doesn't have her coat on, guess what? she won't go out. some dogs need jackets like horses do around here in the wintertime. however, putting costumes on dogs is not cool. unless the dog likes it--and trust me, I've known more than a few chihuahuas (and pit bulls, and black labs) who enjoy wearing a necklace or a hat. the problem is when the clothing interferes with the animals' movements and body functions... people go too far.

finally! I know people think it's cute and funny, but unless it's a special sweater to keep your dog that isn't made for cold climates warm, then you really shouldn't be dressing them in tutus. not only does the dog probably secretly hate you for it, so does the rest of humanity.

My companion and best friend is a dog. I often feel bad when I see some dogs dressed up because you can see they are uncomfortable with the whole thing. But, there are other dogs who enjoy dressing up and being the center of attention.
When me and my dog do therapy work he wears a vest, other than that he goes natural.

You are absolutely right, the truth about PETA here in America is that they want to end pet ownership altogether. They believe that pugs, chihuahuas, and any other type of dog is better off on its own in the wild. This is a problem decades in the making. Pugs can't naturally reproduce themselves, so when PETA releases them into their natural wild freedom, they'll die out. Dogs need people as much as we need them.
By the way, I own two rescue dogs. I had previously taken in a 14-year old abandoned dog who lived to a healthy 17 with me. I can't imagine my life without my pooches!
