Bitter cold hits hard because of economic meltdown

ST. LOUIS – William Davis has lived on the streets since the recession cost him his job as a commercial painter. Over the last eight months, he's made it through heat waves, wind storms, rain, snow and ice.

But the 51-year-old finally sought help at a homeless shelter Thursday after enduring a night shivering alongside a downtown wall in temperatures that bottomed out at zero — the coldest reading here in eight years.

"People gave me blankets and food," Davis said. "I had about 15 covers on me. I slept under this parking garage, where the wind came in only one direction. It was pretty rough. I can deal with it. But it's hard."

The bone-numbing blast of arctic air that lingered over the Northeast and Midwest on Thursday was especially hard on Americans whose lives have been upended by the economic meltdown.

Ray Redlich, assistant director of New Life Evangelistic Center in St. Louis, said the homeless population has changed as the financial crisis has grown worse. Now it includes more people like Davis who just months ago were working for a living.

"We found one young man in a sleeping bag under an overpass. He'd had his home foreclosed on," Redlich said.

The bitter cold killed car batteries, idled ski lifts and sent millions of people scurrying indoors for warmth.

In Pollock, S.D., which dropped to a record-setting 47 below zero, Todd Moser, who works at a gas station, said it took about 10 minutes before the gas pumps started working.

    • Let's all blame President Bush, even 6 months into the Obama presidency. We should continue blaming Bush, because we all know that Obama is perfect and doesn't mess up. I am looking forward to the wake up call and seeing the faces on the media and everyone who thought the answer to our economical crisis was in government. The US, Mexico and Canada will have to merge in order to prevent a collapse.

    • when people cant pay their bills they are considered morally deficient. When businesses cant pay their bills its called to big to fail. In the past when companies were led by incompetents and failed the well managed companies picked their bones and emerged stronger and were rewarded for good management. Today incompetent management is rewarded with government bail outs and are allowed to continue bleeding cash and dragging down the economy.
Case in point is the failure of Circuit City. Even the founders own son admitted that they focused on short term profits rather than building long term value. Now they are gone and Best Buy will now benefit from the billions in sales being freed up from their primary competitor. This is Best Buys reward for good management. Financial analysts predict this boost will serve to keep Best Buy financially solid throughout the recession. Now look to the financial markets. If the Government had stayed out of it we would have already hit rock bottom and the toxic assets would have finally settled at a realistic market value. Banks which did not lose their mind would buy up these assets becoming stronger than ever. Sure people would lose their jobs but this situation would have led to a quicker recovery and new job creation. Now we just sit here with chronic unemployment and market volatility with no end in sight. The number of people who are down and out will continue to rise with no hope of a turn around. Deflation will continue to haunt the marketplace and their is a real chance that America will now have its own lost decade.

    • Tough times are here, and will be here for a longer time, because of the results from the "stimulus" which actually will exacerbate our economy, and slow our economic recovery to a crawl. That the economist and our elected officials fail to comprehend this simple fact is beyond my comprehension. The bloviating of our politicians that the stimulus package is "necessary" and will aid our economic recovery is a delusion and absolute Hot Air ( which I suspect has added greatly to global warming). Yesseree, Bob, good times are a coming, wer gonna print more money!
