"I really think that it's time that our law makers and drug enforcement officials, perhaps scientists and intellectuals, actually sit down and scrutinize this issue and figure out a way to possibly better regulate it, possibly decriminalize it, and there is a way, I think, because, relative to methamphetamine and cocaine, it's not as extreme a drug. I don't know if marijuana will ever become legalized, it quite possibly could become decriminalized, but I do know that the arguments for legalization are very strong!"

Marijuana is a relatively harmless drug, and it is a drug. As with any otner drug, legal or not, its use in moderation is beneficial. It's abuse can be harmful. Legislating morality is almost always a failed policy.
The kicker is this (imho): putting people in jail for possession of weed is downright silly and costly and destructive.
Given that it is almost always the number one cash crop, it seems ridiculous that it isn't made to be more of a benfit.
I think it should be legalized or at least completely decriminalized. - 3 years ago

Hmmmm. But tobacco IS a drug (or at least contains at least one) and is so dangerous that the tobacco companies had to cough up (pun intended) BILLIONS of dollars in damages to the states. I agree that alcohol is more dangerous. A tank is more deadly than a rifle, but they are both deadly. I think there are some excellent arguments for decriminalization, but I think arguing that marijuana is some kind of blissfully harmless substance is a non-starter in a truly honest debate. I used it for a number of years and then stopped. My friends and acquaintances who still use heavily -- even those who don't combine it with alcohol or other substances -- all have pretty much the same energy level. They sit on the couch, get stoned and watch TV, listen to the stereo or surf the 'Net. When they post, they share it with me or tell me about it so I can appreciate their brilliance. 90% of of the time -- pathetic (and embarassing when I show it to them before they start getting stoned the next day. But...whatever flips your switch.

Marijuana should be legalized, taxed and regulated for medicinal and recreational purposes.

I've said this before and I'll say this again. The only people that are killed are the growers of marijuana, or the people who try to get the plant into other countries. Its only bad now because you can actually see fights between armies and growers, and you can see people getting killed needlessly. Its not a drug, just like tobacco isn't a drug. India has it and they're not falling apart. Native Americans smokes all kinds of things, the only thing that killed them were the Europeans. Its just a plant.

Awesome video! Lisa is an incredible journalist!
I am for the legalization of marijuana, but I am doubtful it will ever come to pass. Even though it would create so much jobs and revenue for our country, arresting and prosecuting marijuana offenders produces a large amount of revenue in itself. Just like the wars in the Middle East are profitable for the war machine, so is the war on drugs.

What we are learning of Obama is his political suaveness towards controversial issues. He knows he must take steps A, B, and C before he can reach D. For those of us already at D, we must wait for him to bring the rest of the country to our side.

Obama's website makes it very clear that Obama has no intention of legalizing marijuana. =( So much for green jobs and renewable fuel....

yeah, but he is in favor of the decriminalization of it and that is a huge step in its own right.

This was an excellent video. I am completely for legalizing marijuana, and this reporter made very good points. Law officials should sit down and actually LOOK at what marijuana really is and how it works. In my opinion, alcohol is much worse. Yet it's legal...? hmmm. doesn't make any sense.

You are so right. Alcohol kills people in a wide variety of ways, from cirrohsis to drunk driving accidents. Marijuana in and of itself has never killed anyone. Of couse driving under the ifluence could certainly make that happen, but the drug itself is the most harmless of any, including alcohol and tobacco.
