People viewing from the southern Indian Ocean were among the few to see the full annular eclipse, so called because at its peak the eclipse is surrounded by an annulus, or ring, of fiery light.
Because the moon's orbit is elliptical, its distance from Earth--and thus its apparent size--varies over time. Annular eclipses happen when the moon looks too small to completely cover the sun, an event that occurs about 66 times a century.

solar eclipses are so beautiful.
its too bad we can't really look at them, due to the fact that the corona will damage our retinas.
sigh, what a cold universe. - 3 years ago

I haven't seen any kind of solar eclipse since I was very young, and it was only partial. It would be great to have the privilege to see one again (not directly look at it, of course!).

The moon is slowly drifting further away from the Earth. Soon there won't be any more total solar eclipses, only annular solar eclipses as seen here.

This natural phenominom is impressive indeed, but why the experts dint predict & make much publicity as they are used to. Did this suprise them just as the little 2nd moon. lets hope the 2nd moon will produce an eclpse as well to emulate its elder brother

They did predict this, but it was only visible in Asia. You can find a map of upcoming eclipses at http://hermit.org/Eclipse/when_solars.html .
