Even if high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) does not contain mercury it is like poisen to your pancreas.
My husband's doctor told him that he can not have any of it.
Its is just about everything, even canned soup! Its cheaper than cane sugar and that is why they use it.
It is believed to be one of the exacerbating factors in early onset adult diabetes that is flourishing in teens. - 2 years ago

In a September 2007 forum, Sen. Joe Biden said that among the threats of high-fructose corn syrup, coal and terrorism, terrorism was the third most likely to contribute to the deaths of average Americans.

If you ever watch Bill Mahrer's show on HBO he talks a lot about this powerful industry and the Corn Syrup making Americans fat and unhealthy. I am always trying to eat fresh produce and food. Try to stay away from anything in a box, bottle, or package that goes in the freezer.

Real Time with Bill Maher, New Rules (9/28/07) He talks about drugs/food about three minutes into this video.
Excerpt from New Rules April 20, 2007:
So, here's a quote from Albert Einstein. He said, if the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination. No more plants. No more animals. No more man. Well, guess what? The bees are disappearing in massive numbers all around the world. And if you think I'm being alarmist, and that, "Oh, they'll figure out some way to pollinate the plants." No, they've tried.
For a lot of what we eat, only bees work. And they're not working. They're gone. It's called "colony collapse disorder," when the hive's inhabitants suddenly disappear and all that's left are a few queens and some immature workers. Like when a party winds down at Elton John's house. Queens imagery.
But, I think we are the ones suffering from colony collapse disorder. Because, although nobody really knows for sure what's killing the bees, it's not Al Qaeda, and it's not God doing some of his Old Testament shtick. And it's not Winnie the Pooh. It's us. It could be from pesticides or genetically-modified food or global warming, or the high fructose corn syrup we started to feed them.
Recently, it was discovered that bees won't fly near cell phones. The electromagnetic signals they emit might screw up the bees' navigation system, knocking them out of the sky. So, thanks, big mouth guy in line at Starbucks. You just killed us.
It's nature's way of saying, "Can you hear me now?"
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank goodness for HBO and Bill Maher!
P.S. Watch his movie, "Religulous," it's hilarious.

all of my sisters have lots of food allergies. all to different things so my parents had to change diets in the last few years. my first sister is highly allergic to corn and my parents don't mind to much. all of the stuff they ate with corn syrup wasn't good for them anyways. it sucks they have to be forced to eat like because of allergies but i think my sisters will be better off eating brown sugar (my other sister is allergic to white sugar).
btw excellent post as always jan! keep 'em coming!

Check the ingredients of what you buy and you will discover that this crap is in everything. My hubby can not have it and I read all the ingredients. Recently I found it in some Campbells Soup!!!!!!!!!
I have to buy bread at the Health food store to not get this crap in bread.If you have diabetes type II, it is really bad for you, but its bad for everyone else too, and it makes to fat faster.

A few years back, I saw a "food convention" on TV. The reporter walked around and asked questions. It was not like heres a great recipe...it was all "additives". Teaching companies things they could add to make their products thicker, thinner, sweeter (for addiction), and all these things were NON-foods. Chemicals! Have you noticed how 'processed foods" have about 50 things under ingredients and most of them we have no idea what they are.
HFcS is BAD stuff. My husband came home bragging he ate a healthy Oatmeal cookie for a snack. He brought me one the next day so I could look at it. OMG, at least 40-50 ingredients and REMEMBER, they are listed by the greater amount FIRST. Usually HFCS is no. 1-3!
I shop for fruit, produce(organic usually) scant amount of meat for my husband. I had weight loss surgery, lost 130 lbs! Now I am a health nut. I am no longer diabetic, no high blood pressure, arthritis pain in knees is gone. All because now I cannot eat any surgar and I love eating healthy now. I used to work a very high stress nursing job...no time to eat so lunch was usually from the vending machine at 3pm. When I got home I ate anything in sight to relieve my stress. Now I carry a banana or grapes or protein shake with me. I have more energy than I did 20 years ago.
It it is a "live" food (from the ground) with nutrients its good. If it is man-made, usually from a box, don't buy it.

Anti-food? Who are you trying to kid? This is a pro-food post, maybe you should consider looking at it, or don't you eat food like the rest of us?
Food should be about nutrition and wellness, not profit and corporate greed. What you see on the average supermarket shelf for your family to buy and eat has as much to do with shareholder profits and return on investment as it does with the health and sustenance of your bodies. Probably more.
In "King Corn," when no high fructose corn sweetener factory will allow access to Ian and Curt, they decide to make their own high fructose corn syrup. It's very interesting and...... delicious!

I've been hearing about this from my two older brothers for months... and possibly a year or two because one is a Chiropractor and the other is a Gym Trainer so this is nothing new to me. I don't drink soda at all and I somewhat closely watch what I eat.
My rule of thumb is, moderation is key in all things.

http://heartspring.net/mercury_poison_symptoms.html
Symptoms of Mercury Poisoning
By the Environmental Protection Agency* Impairment of the peripheral vision
* Disturbances in sensations ("pins and needles" feelings, numbness) usually in the hands feet and sometimes around the mouth
* Lack of coordination of movements, such as writing
* Impairment of speech, hearing, walking;
* Muscle weakness
* Skin rashes
* Mood swing
* Memory loss
* Mental disturbance"Twenty-One Percent of Women Tested Nationwide Have Mercury Levels Higher Than EPA Limit "
The symptoms don't really fit, but there definitely is evidence to suggest mercury is in HFCS.
It's nothing to freak out about and it clearly isn't responsible for all the social ills of society Jan railed off earlier, but it is concerning.
Mercury is an extremely dangerous element and definitely belongs nowhere near humans that can be exposed to it even in tiny amounts.
Hopefully there will be a full investigation about this, but with the state the FDA is in, I doubt it. Maybe Obama will give them some teeth again, but who knows?
For the time being, stay away from this shit for sure as you should have been doing already. It's hard because it's in damn near everything, but if you avoid it when you can it should be enough to keep you healthy. That and partially hydrogenated soybean oil, stay away from that shit.
Keep in mind that you come into contact with potentially hazardous toxins everyday and your body can deal with it. So don't panic, your physical ailments are probably not caused by mercury poisoning if they don't fit the above description. But definitely keep a watchful eye out for the time being.

Many common foods made using commercial high fructose corn syrup contain mercury as well, researchers reported on Tuesday, while another study suggested the corn syrup itself is contaminated.
Food processors and the corn syrup industry group attacked the findings as flawed and outdated, but the researchers said it was important for people to know about any potential sources of the toxic metal in their food.
In one study, published in the journal Environmental Health, former Food and Drug Administration scientist Renee Dufault and colleagues tested 20 samples of high fructose corn syrup and found detectable mercury in nine of the 20 samples.
Dufault said in a statement that she told the FDA about her findings but the agency did not follow up.

Richard Nixon's Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz approved this experiment on the U.S. public after major contributions by the corn producers in the Ag Industry with no in-depth scientific study of its effects. Even without the mercury, it's one of the major poisons in the US factory food diet. You can get a real education in reading food labels trying to avoid high fructose corn syrup. It's the cheapest form of mass production sweetener and is in almost every mass produced American food. I avoid it because it makes my eyes tear and my throat close up. Perhaps this is why.

Processed foods are evil. People didnt really start to have serious health problems on a regular basis until fast food came along. Then came the cavalcade of processed foods (Hamburger Helper, Rice-A-Roni, frozen dinners, pre-made waffles, etc etc etc), and 50 years later we have rampant heart disease, diabetes, acid reflux, Autism (which is suspected of being caused or triggered by mercury exposure), and mental illnesses like General Anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder. We really need to get back to the olden days on this issue, and cook our own foods with natural ingredients. BTW, I've noticed alot of "Natural" foods that contain HFCS, and cottonseed oil. I guess someone wants us to think GMOs are natural......?

Where does all the mercury come from?
Most people don't know how high-fructose corn syrup is really made. One of those processes is a bizarre chemical brew involving the creation of caustic soda by exposing raw materials to pools of electrified mercury in a large vat. Through this process, the caustic soda gets contaminated with mercury, and when corn kernels are exposed to this caustic soda to break them down, that contamination is passed through to the HFCS.
Another toxic chemical, glutaraldehyde, is also used in the production of HFCS. It's so toxic that consuming even a small amount of it can burn a hole in your stomach.
But don't worry: The Corn Refiners Association insists that HFCS is a "natural" ingredient, and their Chicago-based PR firm Weber Shandwick is now also claiming that HFCS has been declared "natural" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It hasn't really, of course, but that doesn't stop the press releases from claiming it has. (If you think a liquid sugar processed with glutaraldehyde and contaminated with mercury is "natural," then you've been duped. There's nothing natural about a processed food ingredient made with toxic chemicals.)
A Weber Shandwick representative calls me every time I post an article about HFCS, by the way, usually with demands that I remove the entire article. I've invited the Corn Refiners Association to a phone interview to defend their position that HFCS doesn't cause diabetes or obesity, and to answer questions about whether HFCS is really "natural." So far, they have declined to be interviewed. It seems they don't want to face real questions from an honest journalist who refuses to be censored by powerful corporations.
One thing I've got to say about the Corn Refiners Association is that they have a well-funded PR machine running around the internet trying to make everybody remove stories that say anything negative about HFCS.
I've noticed that the Corn Refiners Association is a master at spinning the truth. For example, the president of the CRA, Audrae Erickson, said this in a statement responding to the mercury findings: "Our industry has used mercury-free versions of the two reagents mentioned in the study, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda, for several years."
Well sure, that's true. But what is Erickson NOT saying? She's not saying that ALL the HFCS is made without mercury. She just says that somewhere in the industry, somebody is using a mercury-free version of the caustic soda. That doesn't mean all the HFCS is mercury free, yet if you don't read her statement carefully, you might be misled into thinking that. Her statement, in fact, leaves open the possibility that 99% of all HFCS might still be manufactured using mercury.
Note carefully that Erickson does not say all HFCS sold in the U.S. is free from mercury. Instead, she makes a clever statement that results in most readers assuming that's what she means. The CRA is well known for using this kind of language spin tactics.
NaturalNews challenges the CRA to state that all HFCS is free from mercury (see below).

From the article:
New research published in Environmental Health and conducted in part by a scientist at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy has revealed that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is contaminated with the toxic heavy metal mercury.
That means that many of the products using HFCS may also be contaminated with mercury. Carbonated sodas are sweetened with HFCS, as are candy bars, bread, salad dressings, pizza sauce, fruit drinks and thousands of other grocery items.
Mercury is so highly toxic that it causes severe neurological disorders. It can also result in the loss of hair, teeth and nails as well as muscle weakness, loss of kidney function, emotional mood swings and memory impairment. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercur...) (P.S. Somebody please update this Wikipedia page with this latest research about HFCS being a source for mercury exposure, too.)
The highest level of contamination found in the study (http://www.ehjournal.net/content/8/1/2) was 0.57 micrograms of mercury per gram of HFCS. The EPA says that an average-sized woman should consume no more than 5.5 micrograms per day of mercury, meaning that the average American consumer may be eating five times the upper safety limit of mercury every day due to high-fructose corn syrup consumption if they consume the foods tested in the study.
That's because the average American consumes 12 teaspoons of HFCS every day! So just by eating the standard American diet of processed foods, consumers are right now potentially exposing themselves to exceedingly high levels of mercury that far surpass the safety limits set by the EPA.
Buy groceries, get free mercury!
High-fructose corn syrup is used in almost everything, it seems. A second study conducted by David Wallinga, M.D., entitled "Not So Sweet: Missing Mercury and High Fructose Corn Syrup" (http://healthobservatory.org/librar...) reveals that nearly one-third of all grocery items sweetened with HFCS were contaminated with mercury.
Eating some sweetened yogurt? Mercury!
How about some salad dressing with HFCS? Mercury!
Want some ketchup on that burger? Mercury!
In fact, mercury is found in thousands of grocery products sold across the world right now. And it's no exaggeration to say that mainstream consumers of popular food items are likely suffering from widespread mercury poisoning (especially if you add in the mercury exposure they're getting from dental fillings).
