This kind of winter used to be the norm, on the milder side, up to about thirty years ago. I remember one year in the early sixties where the snow was deep and remained until late May early June. By then, its surface was black from pollution.
Fifteen centimeters is not much at all, either. I wouldn't call this snowfall particularly heavy - it wouldn't have been considered as such thirty years ago.

Winter weather is a great way to study the differences between male and female driving technique.
When on snow, the female is cautious and steady, considering every shift of gear moving off safely if not overly slowly.
The male (and particularly those of the white van driver species) drives hard into the snow and if forced to stop will pull away by spinning the wheels as fast as possible - and I speculate - in order to melt the snow through friction until upon hitting that 10cm square patch of exposed tarmac, lurches forward a couple of metres, to stall and repeat.
Watching is such fun :)

Its about as much pleasure as you can have in the middle of a harsh winter, christmas out the way, in the grip of a massive recession. A bit of mild chaos and a free day off was just what we needed!

Surely £1.2bn is a small price to pay for the mother of all snowball fights.

Cost of this morning's snow to UK businesses has been estimated at over £1.2bn. That's a lot!

Twitter's taken off, as per usual in shared events like this. All around the UK, people have been 'tweeting' ratings of the snow in their area and inserting the tag #uksnow, i.e. "#uksnow E9 6/10"
That info is then automatically used to create a real time UK snow map mashup. It's not entirely accurate as one man's 4/10 snow is an another's 8/10. Plus we're British and we get over-excited about these sorts of things so everyone is giving the white stuff a 10. As the word 'mashup' is used though, it's in the Twitter rules to go nuts and proclaim this is the future of social media.

It's totally the future of social media! Seriously, though, today Twitter's the only thing that works in the Capital city of Twitter.

We harp on about Blitz spirit and London soldiering on during the war but I reckon it's all exaggerated if today's anything to go by. A bit of snow and the entire transport network closes down.
I walked as far as the tube and even that was closed. It's underground! It definitely doesn't snow underground. I've checked.

According to Friends Provident, today's National Sickie Day, with them expecting 30,000 people to call in sick. I think they'll be a few more than that notmaking it into the office.

I remember in 2003 when we had the last heavy snow and were told, next time transport would be prepared for it. Guess what? It isn't!

totally. Other countries measure their snow fall in feet not in inches... how rubbish are we? But yes, not complaining as I write this from my sofa...
