Turns out, books really do let you live vicariously through their characters. Scientist have just completed a study which proves that reading about actions done by characters in a book will increase neural activity as if the reader were performing the actions.

This also means that reading about activities can also make you better at them, as it stimulates the brain, strengthening the neural pathways.

Participants in the study read four short stories one word at a time, so that their brain activity could be monitored at every moment.
