This also means that reading about activities can also make you better at them, as it stimulates the brain, strengthening the neural pathways.
Participants in the study read four short stories one word at a time, so that their brain activity could be monitored at every moment.

Verse broadens the mind, the scientists find
IF LITERATURE is food for the
mind, then a poem is a banquet, according to research by Scottish scientists
which shows poetry is better for the brain than prose.Psychologists at Dundee
and St Andrews universities claim the work of poets such as Lord
Byron exercise the mind more than a novel by Jane Austen. By monitoring the way
different forms of text are read, they found poetry generated far more eye
movement which is associated with deeper thought.Subjects were found to read.................................

OMG all I read is doom and gloom on current.
I am in serious trouble.
I used to always have 3 books going at once. Now I have 1 I am actually interested and 1 I am sorta reading. Both non-fiction. Living in reality.Damn. Does this mean I am gonna spontaneously combust? Or will my brain just turn to mush and come out thru my nose or something... oh ewww!

"'This study suggests that readers do mental simulation when they comprehend a story,' Jeffrey Zacks, director of the university's dynamic cognition laboratory, told the Guardian newspaper."
Kinda cool, I guess. However, stories can be comprehended via more than one medium, or even combinations therein. It would be interesting to see how reading comprehension compares to audio comprehension (such as oral tradition) or visual comprehension (photography), or the combinations (film, TV, theater, comics/graphic novels, etc.). I'm a book nerd, so I like the idea, but I don't buy the suggestion.

If we do not study our history, wars included, 'we are doomed to repeat it'. So we must read/study what works and what does not. So as not to continually repeat our mistakes.
I loved this show as much as the kids. And reading really is fundamental. Reading to kids in the animated voices like on the show piques their interest. Getting young children enrolled in programs for kids at local libraries also helps them see others interested in the unlimmited world of reading. good site. - 3 years ago
