Obamas White House Organic Gardener

"...Claire Strader won the most votes in a national online election to name candidates to fill the role of "White House Farmer."
"Strader's name will be forwarded to President Barack Obama, along with the names of the second- and third-place finishers -- Carrie Anne Little of Mother Earth Farm, in Puyallup, Wash., and Margaret Lloyd of Home Farming in Davis, Calif. -- for consideration."
"This new post would be charged with implementing what could turn out to be your most symbolically resonant step in building a new American food culture. And that is this: tear out five prime south-facing acres of the White House lawn and plant in their place an organic fruit and vegetable garden."

This is exactly the type of "change" that we need - a politician leading by example in the simplest and purest of ways. Victory gardening was huge during WWII and is something we as a Nation should have kept as part of our culture. Instead we have turned to instant gratification, no work / no effort lifestyles.

All's I can say is that eating a pile of crap food makes a mind muddled and it appears that the big minds of the world have been eating big on that pile of crap for some time now and if the current "king of the world" sets a good example and eats good food and serves good food to other dignitaries maybe...just maybe the world leaders will be able to UNmuddle theirs minds a bit and deal witht the mess the muddled minds of the world have created.
...and meantime there is a lot we can do to help!!!!!!!! - 3 years ago

Does anyone truly think that Monsanto is going to allow any president of this country to grow organic vegetables on the lawn? Do you know what message that would send about the very test tube foods our own FDA shoved through the approval process? Of course he said he will "think about it" because the big agrichemical business interests that make their billions from the support of the presidency would never allow this. Appointing Tom Vilsack Sec of Agriculture already gave an insight into where his priorities lie.
And unfortunately, many of the poor in this country do not have what is necessary to grow organic food. Maybe some should undertstand that not all are as well off as they are in this country. If he appoints this organic farmer and yet allows Vilsack to continue the chummy relationship with Monsanto that this government already has, what good will come from that on the whole? Sure people need to know their options, that's why we need labelling on our food. Will that come with an organic White House farmer? Perhaps. But I would rather see some real action coming down on this now than these gestures.

I guess the elite can afford organic gardens grown by gardeners on their lawns. Must be very cool.
Now be quiet and pass me the PURPLE TOMATOES!

Did anyone in this thread read the article? Because the article doesnt state that this is something Obama has agreed to do. Its been proposed by some people and he has said that he will consider it, but nothing is for sure.
"Obama has not said he will appoint a White House farmer, but supporters of the proposal are enthusiastic about the prospect"
I personally would love it if he did decide to at least replace some of the lawn with fruits and vegetables. Its more elegant, sets a good example and who doesnt love fresh produce from right outside their window? Also to those complaining that he should be eating GM like the rest of us, whats stopping you from doing this? Urban gardening is gaining a lot of momentum...from rooftop gardens to public gardens...people even in the most populous of cities are growing their own produce. Some do it because they dont want hormone covered products, others garden for the convenience and to save money and others do it just for the joy of gardening itself.

yeah that's why I said a "possible" first and included the quote "...name(s) will be forwarded to President Barack Obama...for consideration"
:]... either way spreading the news that it could happen at the White House might get people interested in being educated about their options and how important it is for their health. We do have an obesity epidemic in the USA, after all.

monkey see monkey do... maybe this will encourage more people to think about a organic lifestyle, especially those who run our GMO ways of agriculture based in Washington. Good idea!!

It seems about time and right on time that the white house grew food instead of grass. Who cares who does the actual work, creates more jobs. There are people hungry and the food supply is shakey as hell. Cloned, GMO,Radiated...on and on. Growing food instead of ornamentals seems to make sense right now. Our food isn't exactly safe always. It's never a bad thing to grow and eat your own food even without all these issues with our food supply. More power to em. All our Capitol buildings and government lawns should have food growing on them.

It is good that the first family will get the benefit of better health. The bonus that we all gain is the exposure that this gives to organic and locally grown food. More people asking for this produce will spawn more organic farms and result in lowering prices.

If they're going to have an organic garden, they should tend it themselves.
I'm excited though that they will have a garden in their yard. Even just visiting the place your food comes from, thinking about the soil and water that goes into your food, and then into you, it changes the way you see things.
And maybe it will inspire people to put gardens in their own yards. I grow a pretty decent portion of my own food in my yard. Cuts down the amount of lawn i have to mow too.

some people might be inclined to find something wrong with every right thing that occurs at the white house but I THINK IT IS FABULOUS! ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!
I mean what a BLESSING!
The organic food industry couldn't find a better place for a garden nor better, more influential people to feed.
